Transcript
But the godly will flourish like palm trees
and grow strong like the cedars of Lebanon.
For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
They flourish in the courts of our God.
Even in old age they will still produce fruit;
they will remain vital and green.
They will declare, “The Lord is just!
He is my rock!
There is no evil in him!”
Who are the godly? Those who have the characteristics of God.
What will they do? They will flourish. Flourish means to grow. Where God’s grace abound, He also abounds. The same word that is used here is also used in verse 7 as SPROUT. Pawrahk. The Hebrew word can also mean blossom or bloom. The godly sprouts. The godly blossoms. The godly blooms.
That has an overtone of cheerfulness and excitement.
What does it say the godly will flourish like?
Palm trees and the Cedars of Lebanon.
While Palm Trees lavish abundance and provision, they also embody grace and erectness. They can only survive with abundant water.
The Cedars of Lebanon: Reveal strength and majesty. Here are some interesting facts about the Cedars of Lebanon. They grow on slopes that are 6000 ft above sea level. The wood was used for houses, masts of ships and King Solomon used it for building the temple.
Both palm trees and the cedars of Lebanon adorn the temple.
On the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and outer rooms, he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers.
And on the two olive wood doors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with beaten gold.
He carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on them and overlaid them with gold hammered evenly over the carvings.
He engraved cherubim, lions and palm trees on the surfaces of the supports and on the panels, in every available space, with wreaths all around.
Here is a connection for you to consider:
The godly flourish like that which makes up the temple of God. Take it a step further. The godly flourish because they house God almighty. Our timbers house the temple of God!
No wonder the country of Lebanon makes that Cedar its symbol and why it adorns their flag!
Verse 13 tells us that the godly are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
planted in the house of the Lord,
they will flourish in the courts of our God.
For they are transplanted to the Lord’s own house.
They flourish in the courts of our God.
The Hebrew word is shathal and it means transplanted, placed in a place to grow. Remember from Sunday we talked about where we are placed?
He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.
By the river or stream, and again spiritually speaking that river or stream is Grace.
You as a godly person, is not placed in a place in which you will wither up and be unfruitful. Rather, we are placed in such a way to grow and reproduce fruit.
You may ask, “Well, how long can that last?”
They will still bear fruit in old age,
they will stay fresh and green,
Even in old age they will still produce fruit;
they will remain vital and green.
They will stay or remain. If one is going to stay or remain, what does that mean? It means they were already there.
I am reminded of John 10:28-29
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
You, godly person, will remain fresh and vital even in your old age! You can decide: fresh and flavorable or frozen and frigid.
When the godly person recognizes this, they we will see them declare:
proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.”
I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
