There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Hate and abomination is to be read synonymously as they mean practically the same thing in Hebrew. We should also not think too deeply about the numbers six and seven as if there are only six things that God hates and only seven things that is an abomination.
GOD HATES SIN. PERIOD.
So this is just a literary device that King Solomon chooses to use. It is no different than me giving you a three point sermon on how to grow closer to Jesus, knowing that there are more than three things that can develop you as a Christian.
Haughty Eyes - to exalt oneself, to be arrogant
Haughty eyes and a proud heart, The lamp of the wicked, is sin.
God hates haughtiness because it takes the place of God in what directs your path. Your mind is your lamp instead of the Word of God being your lamp. It is haughtiness when we allow our ideas and beliefs and perspectives on life trump whatever God has to say.
There is a kind who is pure in his own eyes, Yet is not washed from his filthiness. There is a kind—oh how lofty are his eyes! And his eyelids are raised in arrogance.
Go hates haughtiness because it blinds us from seeing the truth about ourselves. Haughtiness sees yourself as whole in area that you are very broken in. Again, haughtiness takes the place of God because it draws its definition of wholeness not from God, but from self and perhaps the relation of self to the environment around you.
For instance because I’m not like them or as bad as them, then I don’t struggle with that.
And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. “The Pharisee stood and was praying this to himself: ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other people: swindlers, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ‘I fast twice a week; I pay tithes of all that I get.’ “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ “I tell you, this man went to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
