“After Careful Consideration”

Tonight, we are going to be in Luke 1:1-4.
Looking for a new start. OR Carefully considering the fact.
Probably use something like how Lee Stroubel searched and searched to find the answers about Jesus.
Luke 1:1–4 KJV 1900
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

Context:

As we study through Luke’s gospel, it’s good for us to comprehend that Luke, the writer of this book, is a trained physician.
He is a doctor.
Here’s the point I want to make about the context of this passage: Luke was a trained physician who took time to convince Theophilus and the Greeks who Jesus was.
Luke presents Jesus as the perfect human, and refers to Jesus as the Son of Man. Fully God and Fully man.

Outline:

Why is it so helpful for us to take a long time to study what God’s Word says about Jesus?

1. Luke Aims for Accurate Beliefs

I want to share with you, what those eyewitnesses shared with me.
I want to teach you the things WE believe.
Verse 1, Luke says he “taken in hand (that’s attempting) to set forth in order (that’s write an account) of those things we surely believe...”
Notice what Luke aims for:

a. Sure Beliefs

“most surely believed” - This is not something left up to chance.
This is not something that is questionable.
This is not something that is worth being on the fence about.
This is absolute truth.
This phrase speaks of: fully convinced, to be satisfied, and fulfilled.
Our beliefs influence our behavior. Having a high view of Jesus leads to a high volume of satisfaction in Jesus.
Believing the truth about Jesus leads to satisfaction.
Studies show that being religious can lead to happier lives. That’s great and all.
Cheayoon Lim and Harvard researcher studied this. Harvard researcher Robert Putnam, tackled both questions with their study. In 2006, they contacted a nationally representative sample of 3,108 American adults via phone and asked them questions about their religious activities, beliefs and social networks. In 2007, they called the same group back and got 1,915 of them to answer the same batch of questions again.
The surveys showed that across all creeds, religious people were more satisfied than non-religious people. According to the data, about 28 percent of people who attended a religious service weekly were "extremely satisfied" with their lives, compared with 19.6 percent of people who never attended services.
Church and church friends are important and good.
But what I’m talking about is the deep satisfaction that is found in Jesus Christ.
Now bear with me… what did Luke present to Theophilus about solid beliefs?
First, Jesus is God.
Luke 1:35 KJV 1900
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Second, Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost.
Luke 19:10 KJV 1900
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Acts 4:12 KJV 1900
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
The God of this world died for you!
The God that died for you rose in victory and gives you a chance to be forgiven!!
It would do you some good to just sit back and ponder that for a while. Think about the gospel! Think about the goodness that Jesus loves you and died for you.
Be satisfied with that and that alone!

b. Credible Sources

Luke is writing to remind Theophilus and us that we have credible sources here to follow. Who is “THEY?”
“Even as they delivered them”
Hebrews 2:1–3 KJV 1900
Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
We need to hold onto the things we heard, unless we begin to get into the deadly drift.
How can we escape a great salvation?
It was first spoken by the Lord, and confirmed by them that heard Jesus!
Who is “They?”
Eyewitnesses
Mark 4:14 KJV 1900
The sower soweth the word.
Mark 16:20 KJV 1900
And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.
1 Corinthians 15:3–7 KJV 1900
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.

2. Luke Assures a Altered Beginning

verse 2 - “even as they delivered them unto us, WHICH FROM THE BEGINNING...”
Everything changed with the cross of Jesus Christ and His resurrection.
Having a brand new start is awesome.
Moving to a new school or new city can offer new beginnings.
What does this new beginning offer?

a. Luke’s Discovery

verse 3 - “it seemed good to me also...”
Here is a doctor that had likely built a great practice, and he has changed courses and is now writing about the life of Jesus!
Why did it seem good? Why was he determined to write all this? Why was he determined to share this message with others?
He had perfect understanding
completely understand
to understand details and fully
Illustration of a brick mason.
If
He recieved this understanding from above
“from the very first” is the Greek word “anothen” which can mean “Up, upward, or abo e.”
This word is translated in John 3:31, John 19:11, James 1:17, 3:15 as “from above.”
Luke heard all these things from eyewitnesses, but it was all confirmed from above. God confirmed these truths in his own heart.

b. Luke’s Discipleship

This passage reads like Theophilus has already received Christ. So he’s a believer
