I. Intro: A Psalm or Son of Asaph

75:title TO THE CHOIRMASTER: ACCORDING TO DO NOT DESTROY. A PSALM OF ASAPH. A SONG.

1. Asaph was the son of Berechiah who was a descendant of Levi through his son Gershom.
2. Asaph was a singer who had charge of bronze cymbals (1 Chr 15:19)
3. Asaph was a chief musician or minister before the ark of the covenant as well as a singer with his brothers. (1 Chr 16:4-7)
4. Asaph was also a seer (2 Chr 29:30; cf. 1 Sam 9:9) and the Levites used King David’s and Asaph’s words for Israel’s worshipping of God.
5. Psalms 50 and Psalms 73-83 are affiliated with Asaph.

II. The three springs of giving thanks to God (v. 1)

A. We give thanks to God (1a)
God’s Person
B. We give thanks because your name is near. (1b)
God’s name
C. We give thanks by recounting your wondrous deeds. (1c)
God’s acts

III. God speaks (vs. 2-5)

A. I judge (v. 2)
at the set time I appoint
with equity
B. I keep the pillars steady (v. 3)
when the earth totters
all its inhabitants totter
now take a Selah!
C. I warn the boastful and the wicked (v. 4-5)
Do not boast
Do not lift up your horn–on high
Do not speak with haughty neck

IV. God is the source of exaltation and judgment. (vs. 6-7)

V. The judgment of the wicked (v. 8)

Isaiah 51:17 ESV
17 Wake yourself, wake yourself, stand up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk from the hand of the Lord the cup of his wrath, who have drunk to the dregs the bowl, the cup of staggering.

VI. The hope of the righteous (v. 9-10)

A. I will declare it (His praises) forever
B. without threat of violence from the wicked
C. The horns of the righteous shall be lifted up.
