Jesus Preaches with Authority

Notes
Transcript
Today we continue studying together the Life of Christ. Last week, from the account of Jesus moving into Capernaum and calling four of His disciples we were able to see these four main ideas.

Review: 1. Our Identity determines our mission.

Review: 2.Our Mission informs our lifestyle and message.

Review 3.Our mission, lifestyle, and message informs the world and calls others out of the harvest into the mission.

Today we are going to look again at Jesus message and then what we can expect to happen when we follow his example in preaching and teaching the same things.

I. Jesus taught with Authority (Mark 1:21-22, Luke 10:19)

Authority

ἐξουσία exousia; from 1832; power to act, authority:—authorities(7), authority(65), charge(1), control(1), domain(2), dominion(1), jurisdiction(1), liberty(1), power(11), powers(1), right(11).

A. Once again we see that Jesus made the corporate gathering a priority
B. The people were astonished at his teaching/doctrine.
1. What was he teaching? (2 clues) Matthew 4:17
a. Astonished (Mark 10:26) - The word for “astonished” is used 13x in the New Testament. This word carries with it the idea of amazement and panic. I think this accurately describes the emotions of the unregenerate when they come face to face with an understanding of the holiness of God and their sin. They are struck with both amazement and terror.
b. Authority (Matthew 4:17) - The message of the Gospel is proclaimed not as an option, but as a command.

II. The spiritual forces of darkness immediately manifested themselves through a person in direct opposition to Gospel. (Mark 1:23-24, Luke 4:33-34)

A. Demons show up wherever the gospel is faithfully preached
B. Often times the message of the demonic realm is preached through a human voice. If we preach the kingdom of light, the demons will preach the kingdom of darkness. If we enter into the realm of Satan armed with the light of the Gospel we can/should expect war.
1. Through possession
2. oppression (influence through human sinfulness)
C. The weapons of the demonic realm
1. Direct opposition
2. Subversion
-Notice the Demonic realm operated from with in the religious community. This demon possessed man attended the synagogue. We saw this same reaction to the gospel when Jesus preached the gospel previously in the synagogue(they wanted to throw Jesus off a cliff) Mark 1:23
James 3:13-16, James 4:1
a. bitterness and envy
b. selfish ambition - trying to hold onto or gain influence in order to control the outcome.
c. disorder/disunity
d. infighting
C. The source of problems in the church are never a result of the mission, but rather worldliness, demonic wisdom/ideas and anything that opposes the mission(any idea that opposes the gospel mission.)
III.

Application: We cannot attack hell and not expect hell to attack back. Wherever the Gospel is preached the enemy can be expected to stand in opposition. By whom will you be used? Romans 6:12-13
