Psalm 2, Four Reasons not to Worry About the plans of the wicked men.

2. They Are Empty

Psalm 2:1–3 NASB95
1 Why are the nations in an uproar And the peoples devising a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand And the rulers take counsel together Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us tear their fetters apart And cast away their cords from us!”

The nations revolt (1)

This is the hypothetical question to end all hypothetical questions. Why do they think they can defeat God? Why did Satan think he could temp Jesus to sin? Why did Satan think that he could win by murdering Jesus? Why does the world think that it can destroy Christ and us His followers? This was inscribed on two monumental pillars in Spain. The fist one said, “Diocletian Jovian Maximian Herculeus Caesares Augusti, for having extended the Roman Empire in the east and the west, and for having extinguished the name of Christians, who brought the Republic to ruin.” The second said, Docletian Jovian Maximian Herculeus Caesares Augusti, for having adopted Galerius in the east, for having everywhere abolished the superstition of Christ, for having extended the worship of the gods.”
To that we say, “Neither in Spain, nor elsewhere, can be pointed out the burial place of Christianity; it does not exist, for the living have no tomb.”

The nations plan and plot (2)

conspiracies to overthrow God and His Christ, to overtake and rule the world.

The nations speak (3)

“Nothing is more irrational than irreligion” Spurgeon

2. God is Not Worried

Psalm 2:4–6 NASB95
4 He who sits in the heavens laughs, The Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.”

God Laughs (4)

First He reacts with laughter. What can you say about this? God takes all the hot air that spews out of their mouths lightly. You want to make God laugh? Tell him that your going to dethrone Him. Tell Him that He’s not really God. Tell Him that if all of humanity would get together as one we wouldn’t need Him. Do that and you will hear the thunder roar in laughter at such foolishness and then you will see lightning strike in righteous anger as He wipes the defiant smirk off their faces. They will beg the mountains and the rocks to fall on them and hide them from the Lord and the King that He has placed on the throne.
Examples: Pharaoh killing the Hebrew baby boys/One is trained in his palace, Philistines capture the Ark of the covenant and place it in Dagon’s temple/the statue of Dagon falls to the floor with a detached head and hands, Belshazzar uses the temple’s dishes for an unholy party/God’s hand writes a message on his wall.
“God’s Anointed is appointed, and shall not be disappointed.” Spurgeon

God Speaks (5-6)

3. Jesus Wins

Psalm 2:7–9 NASB95
7 “I will surely tell of the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 ‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 9 ‘You shall break them with a rod of iron, You shall shatter them like earthenware.’ ”

The Son Declares His Position (7)

The Father’s response is none other than Jesus Christ Himself. This verse is quoted in the NT 3 times (Heb. 1:5; 5:5 and Acts 13:33). The passage in Acts is most informative.
Acts 13:33–34 NASB95
33 that God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘You are My Son; today i have begotten You.’ 34 As for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’
The day that Jesus was begotten by the Father was the day He raised Him from the dead as the second Adam and all of those who are begotten through Jesus will live eternally. So what does the Father say to the nations? “My Son Lives, and you can’t touch Him!”

The Son Declares His Privilege (8)

And what does Jesus receive? Oh glory of all glories, He gets the wicked nations as a possession! If I got that as an inheritance I would be severely disappointed. He of course is not like me, and it’s a good thing because “the end of the earth in the hands of Ethan ends up in evil error, but sinful states in the hands of a superior Savior shatters self sufficiency.” (Rev. 19:15)

The Son Declares His Power (9)

Jesus will discipline the nations with an iron rod (same word used in Proverbs for disciplining children), but He will hold that rod with His nail pierced hands.

4. They Have Been Warned

Psalm 2:10–12 NASB95
10 Now therefore, O kings, show discernment; Take warning, O judges of the earth. 11 Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. 12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

To Worship

Their only recourse is to worship the Lord. This will be the way things work throughout the millennium.

Or To Perish

In verse 12 “do homage” is more literally, “kiss” the Son or He will become angry. It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of an angry God. Instant judgment, no courts, no lawyers, no juries, and just one Judge – Jesus. BUT
How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! Yes, that’s an exclamation point on the end of that, so that you say it with emphasis and I say it like this, “Blessed am I for I have put my trust in Him!” Amen!
