Text: Acts 4:32–35 (KJV 1900)

32 And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common. 33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all. 34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

I). God is not a respecter of persons.

* My friend, according to the Word of God, God some kind of favor on those who were born into “Christian Families.” You are not automatically saved because you have some kind of favor with God. The Bible teaches that we are all sinners and that we are enemies with God. We are under the wrath of God until them moment that we repent of our sin with a sorrowful heart, and come to Christ for salvation.

* The good news of the Gospel is that salvation, the forgiveness of sin, is available to anyone who wants it because God is no respecter of persons.

*The ground is level at the cross this morning.

Revelation 22:16–17 (KJV 1900)

16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. 17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.

* God had to teach Peter that the Gospel is no respecter of persons.

9 On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: 10 And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, 11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: 12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air. 13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. 14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. 15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. 16 This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

17 Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made inquiry for Simon’s house, and stood before the gate, 18 And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there. 19 While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee. 20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them. * After these events Peter went to the home of the gentile soldier and for the first time saw the Holy Spirit descend from God on this gentile family and they were all saved by the operation of the Holy Spirit of God that is in no wise a respecter of persons.

* Later Peter was called upon by the Church at Jerusalem to testify of these things and a decree went out from the church that according to the Gospel the gentiles were equal to the Jews.

2). Jesus spoke of equality in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 20:1–16 (KJV 1900)

For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. 2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. 5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? 7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. 8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. 9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. 10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. 11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, 12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. 13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? 14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. 15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Luke 20:27–36 (KJV 1900)

3).The early church practiced an attitude of equality.

9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 10 And herein I give my advice: for this is expedient for you, who have begun before, not only to do, but also to be forward a year ago. 11 Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will, so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have. 12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not. 13 For I mean not that other men be eased, and ye burdened: 14 But by an equality, that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want, that their abundance also may be a supply for your want: that there may be equality: 15 As it is written, He that had gathered much had nothing over; and he that had gathered little had no lack.

4). Throughout history, everywhere the Gospel is has been preached and accepted, men have become free and equal.

* About 300 years after Christ died on the cross something happened to the church.

* After the death of Christ the church grew like a wildfire across the Roman Empire.

* The Roman Empire had taken over the whole world, but the Gospel was threatening to take over the whole Roman Empire.

* Because of this, the Roman Emperors tried to crush the advancement of the gospel by putting the death the leaders of the church.

* The church had endured 10 terrible bloody persecutions at the hands of the Roman rulers.

* Listen to the words of Jesus in Revelation chapter 2 as Jesus warns the church of this coming persecution by the Roman Empire:

Revelation 2:8–11 (KJV 1900)

8 And unto the angel of the church in Smyrna write; These things saith the first and the last, which was dead, and is alive; 9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. 10 Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. 11 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

* Christians were forced into slavery and sent into the Roman coliseums to fight wild beasts, criminals, and Roman soldiers. The Romans watched and cheered as the flesh was torn from the bodies of men women and children that held to their confession of faith in Christ without wavering.

* These terrible persecutions failed to stop the Church. The Gospel had spread to the entire Roman Empire.

* Satan had not been able to stop the church by spilling the blood of the Christians, but the blood of those saints of God had only served to water the seed of the Gospel and cause the Gospel to bear much fruit.

*About 300 years after the death of Christ Satan changed his methods.

* By then the Roman Empire was beginning to fall apart from the inside because of government corruption. Rome had become divided. The people of Rome had become discontent with their own government.

* An emperor by the name of Constantine, who had aspirations of bringing the Roman Empire back together, and thus ruling over all of Rome, devised a plan.

* If Satan could not destroy the church by murder and intimidation, then he would he would destroy the church by deception. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join’em”

* Constantine claimed to have seen a vision of a burning cross in the sky and was told by God to go forth and conquer by the power of the cross.

* Constantine went on from this “vision” to defeat his adversary and pull the pull the empire back together.

* Constantine went on to make Christianity part of the Roman Government.

* He took the money from the Government sponsored temples of the Greek and Roman Gods and gave it to the Christian churches. The Christians churches had met in secret in homes and caves for over 300 years. Now the Christians churches had found themselves rich almost overnight!

* When the priests and ministers of the temples to the Greek and Roman Gods saw that the money had moved to the Christian churches that Constantine had built, they followed the money and became Christians.

* Listen to the words the Holy Spirit had Jude to write to the church concerning the corruptions that these unsaved men brought into the churches in the early days of the Roman Catholic Church:

Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called: 2 mercy unto you, and peace, and love, be multiplied.

3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. 4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 I will therefore put you in remembrance, though ye once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. 6 And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. 7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire. 8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities. 9 Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee. 10 But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves. 11 Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.

12 These are spots in your feasts of charity when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; 13 raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever. 14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.

16 These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling words, having men’s persons in admiration because of advantage. 17 But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; 18 how that they told you there should be mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. 19 These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.

* Satan had successfully joined the church. There was now a false church and a true church.

* Jesus had foretold of this very thing in the parable of the wheat and the tares:

Matthew 13:24–30 (KJV 1900)

24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field: 25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. 26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. 27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? 28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? 29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Matthew 13:36–43 (KJV 1900)

36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one; 39 The enemy that sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. 40 As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. 41 The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. * These two churches became married together and the wheat and tares began to grow together.

* In the book of Revelation we have the actual account of the Angels of God separating the true church from the false church and reaping the fruit of the earth:

14 And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle. 15 And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe. 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.

17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle. 18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe. 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God. 20 And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

Jesus had warned of this in Rev. 2

12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges; 13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth. 14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication. 15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate. 16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. 17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

* We see the false church that persecuted the true church pictured in Revelation:

17 And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters: 2 With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication. 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration. 7 And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? * Constantine declared himself head of the church, (in place of Christ), and from there the false church eventually evolved to have a Pope. The Pope is said by the Roman Catholics to be the “Vicar” of Christ. The word Vicar means to “Stand in Place of” Christ. This is the true meaning of the term Anti-Christ.

1 John 4:3–6 (KJV 1900)

3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

* The false church reined over the kings of the earth for nearly 1000 years. The Roman Catholic Church claimed that the decrees and rules set forth by the church were the final authority on spiritual matters, not the Scriptures.

* For the next 1000 years the Roman Church kept the Scriptures from the masses of people. The church hid the word of God from the people and began to preach that salvation was only in the Roman Church. Satan now had his own counterfeit church.

* Listen to the warning Jesus gave to his disciples concerning the false prophets and priests of the Roman Catholic Church:

13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

* The Apostle Paul had warned that men would come and use the form of the church to put men in bondage to manmade rules such as the Roman Church forced upon the people of the middle ages.

* Listen to how the Holy Spirit had warned the church of the man made rules and ordinances of the Roman Catholic Church:

* The world became stooped in a feudalistic society where men were not equal in the eyes of the church. The poor became the slaves of the rich and the value of a man’s life became worthless. Only those of wealthy status and the educated had access to the Scriptures. Those who had money could buy the forgiveness of sins. For those who could pay, you could buy your loved ones out of Hell. The poor feared the rulers of the church because they could put them to death, or confiscate their belongings at will. This was the bloodiest and darkest time of man’s history to date. Historians call this time in history “the dark ages.” Life was full of misery, fear, and despair. During this time it is estimated that over 50,000 true believers were put to death by the Roman Catholic Chruch.

* For almost 1000 years the true church went underground meeting in secret in caves, and remote places for fear of persecution from the false Roman Church.

and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection: 36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: 37 They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; 38 (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

* It appeared that Satan had all but stifled the flame of the Gospel, but God had a plan.

* Starting around 1300 AD God began to raise up men and women one right after another that began to fan the flame of the Gospel once again. God raised up men from within and without the false church that saw the corrupt church for what it was. They began the work of translating the Scriptures into the languages that the common man could read and understand. They gave their lives to repeal the laws that made it illegal to read and quote the Bible without the authority of the church.

* The glorious light of the Gospel had once again begun to burn with a flame that the Roman Church could not quench. Like wild fire the reformation movement jumped from continent to continent until all of Europe was illuminated with the light of the Gospel.

* With the Gospel also came a movement to reform government and the oppression of men. One by one kings and magistrates fell to the voice of the people who demanded that men be treated as God had created them. Free and equal. The light of the Gospel had begun to make men free.

John 8:31–36 (KJV 1900)

31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

* As a result of the knowledge of the Gospel men began to flee religious persecution and seek a new land where men could govern themselves as free and equal. As a result of the revival of the Gospel flames, the Holy Spirit of God raised up a new world, a land called America.

* Since the revival of the light of the Gospel in Europe, and the founding of America, those societies that have embraced the Gospel have still fought the right for all men to be treated equal. The modern civil rights movements around the world have been started by men and women who have learned by the Gospel that God has created all me to be free and treated equally.

* The founders of the movement to abolish slavery in America were mostly Christians who learned by the Gospel that men should be free and treated equally.

I. The Gospel breaks down all the barriers between God and Man.

A. Jesus set forth the example that the Gospel makes all men equal.

John 4:9 (KJV 1900)

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

* Jesus had to deal with the sin with the woman at the well:

a). The Gospel teaches that sin is the barrier that condemns us.

33 And the Lord said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book. 34 Therefore now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them.

Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; Neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, And your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

b). The Gospel teaches that we are condemned by our birth.

D. The Gospel breaks down the barrier between the religious and God.
