God Wants to Spread Some Jelly on You
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
9 O fear the Lord, ye his saints: For there is no want to them that fear him. 10 The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger:
But they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing.
Verse 19
19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous: But the Lord delivereth him out of them all.
Introduction:
* For many weeks we have been preaching about praying.
* This morning I would like to take a minute to tell you that when you pray, God wants to spread a little jelly on you!
* Our text this morning says “O taste and see that the Lord is Good!”
* From our text I want you to see that the Lord is good like jelly this morning!
* In Matthew chapter 7 and verse 9 Jesus is again teaching about praying and he says the following words:
Matthew 7:9–11 (KJV 1900)
9 Or what man is there of you, whom if his son ask bread, will he give him a stone? 10 Or if he ask a fish, will he give him a serpent?
11 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?
* Jesus said when you pray for bread, God is not going to give you a stone!
* Your heavenly father desires to give you bread! He wants to give good gifts to you when you pray.
* But I want to let you in on a little secret this morning- God wants to give you the bread that you ask for when you pray to Him, but even more, God desires to spread a little jelly on that bread!
* That’s just the way God is!
* My sermon this morning is entitled “God wants to spread a little Jelly on you!”
* Turn in your Bibles with me now to
1 Kings 3:5–13 (KJV 1900)
* Now God comes to Solomon in a dream, and asks Solomon to tell him what He can do to bless him…
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
6 And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. 7 And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. 8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
* Now Solomon just been appointed King in his father David’s place, and he is afraid that the job is too big for him.
* He is not concerned with the riches and wealth associated with being King over the people of God, but Solomon’s mind is occupied with the awesome responsibility to be a judge over the matters of the people of the kingdom.
* Solomon could have been selfish and asked for riches and glory for himself, but instead he asked God to give him the wisdom and understand to lead God’s people.
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? 10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
* Now God very is pleased with the unselfish and humble prayer of Solomon, and God gives Solomon more wisdom and understanding than any man who has ever lived before him…
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; 12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
* Now here is the part of this story that I want you to remember this morning. God didn’t stop with just giving Solomon what He asked for, but God gave Solomon everything he didn’t ask for too.
* The wisdom was the bread Solomon asked for, but the riches and power and glory was an extra gift from God. That’s spreading a little jelly in the bread this morning!
13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
* God gave Solomon the wisdom and understanding that he asked for without a doubt. Solomon became known as the wisest man that has ever lived.- God gave him the bread he asked for!
* But look at the Jelly God spread on that bread!
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
* The Bible says that King Solomon became so rich that Jerusalem was filled the riches of the world! Precious stones and silver the Bible says were as common in Israel as the rocks on the ground!
* According to the Bible in 1 Kings 10:13-15 and 2 Chronicles 9:12-14, King Solomon received 666 talents (t) of gold per year as a salary.
* He also received other moneys from various merchants, traders and huge amounts of taxes and tariffs from the surrounding kingdoms as well.
* In today’s money Solomon’s yearly salary would be roughly 709 million dollars per year.
* Keep in mind this was only his annual salary, not including any 'bonuses' or investments that he made from the money he had already inherited from his father David.
* King Solomon ruled for 40 years so that's like 40 billion in income, just from his salary during his lifetime.
* If you take into account all the extra income Solomon would have received, Solomon’s net worth would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 billion dollars in todays money.
* Just to put that into perspective, Bill Gates is currently the richest man in the world with a net worth of 40 billion dollars, and that figure is from 2009.
* Of course, Mr. Gates doesn't have 700 wives to take care of, so that might even things out a little!
* I mean God spread some SERIOUS jelly on Solomon’s bread! All Solomon asked for was wisdom!
* I think of Job, and how that God had jellied Job’s bread so much, that I upset the Devil!
Job 1:1–3 (KJV 1900)
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.
2 And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. 3 His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
* Now the Devil was upset because God has built a hedge of protection around the man Job:
Job 1:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 And the Lord said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
9 Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? 10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
* Man, God was really spreading the jelly on Job’s bread!
* Now we all know how that God allowed the Devil to severely afflict Job, and for a little while, God took his hand of protection off of Job.
* But look what happened just as soon as Job’s trial was over:
Job 42:10–13 (KJV 1900)
10 And the Lord turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before…
12 So the Lord blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning:
* As soon as his trial was over, Job prayed again and God jellied his bread all over again!
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
* I think of the story of the prodigal son this morning.
* The son came back to his father all beat up and starving, all his money gone- the he prays his father just take him in and give him the same bread that he feeds his servants with.
* Well, the father will have none of that!
*The father doesn’t just give the prodigal son some bread, O no! The father runs around hollering at everybody saying
* “Bring the fatted calf!, bring me a ring to put on his finger! Quick! Somebody put a robe on this boy! Hey! You over there! Send out a messenger to all the neighbors, we’re fixing to have the biggest party this place has ever seen!
* When the prodigal son prayed to the father because he needed bread, the father put some SERIOUS jelly on that bread!
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
* Taste the jelly my friends- God is good!
* God through the prophet Malachi, told the backslid Jews of his day:
Malachi 3:10 (KJV 1900)
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be meat in mine house, And prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts,
If I will not open you the windows of heaven, And pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
* That’s some serious jelly my friends!
1 Corinthians 2:9 (KJV 1900)
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
* That’s a God who wants to spread some jelly on his people this morning!
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
* When Jesus was speaking of the blessing that would come to those who give to others in Like 6:37 He said:
Luke 6:38 (KJV 1900)
38 Give, and it shall be given unto you;
good measure,
He’s going to give you a whole bunch of blessings!
pressed down,
Then he’s going to pack all the blessings down so He can give you more!
and shaken together,
Then He’s going to shake your blessings down so that all the empty space is filled and you can hold more!
and running over,
Then He’s going to pour blessings on you so that it heaps up, over the top and the blessings run out on the ground because you are so full of blessings!
shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.
* Now that’s a God who wants to put some jelly on your bread this morning!
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
Conclusion:
* Now most importantly, and here is the thought that I want you to take home with you this morning-
* Believe in your heart that God is the kind of God that wants to spread jelly on those who will love Him! According to Hebrews 11:6, this the basis of all faith:
Hebrews 11:6 (KJV 1900)
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is,
and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
* Did you catch that?
* Faith believes that God wants to spread a jelly on those that seek Him!
* Romans 2:4 says that “the Goodness of God leadeth men to repentance.”
* To the person here that has not placed your faith in Jesus for salvation: God desires to be good to you.
* Will you put your trust in Jesus to save you, and cleanse you of all yours sins? He wants to put a little jelly on you this morning!
* To the saved person this morning who is out of fellowship with God- will you turn your heart back to God in love, God loves you, and desires so much to do good to you this morning.
* Will you come and open your hearts and let God spread a little jelly on your bread this morning?
Text: Psalm 34:8–10 (KJV 1900)
8 O taste and see that the Lord is good: Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
* Let’s pray together.
