WEEK 4: Overcoming Unbelief
Mark 9:14–29
Intro:
As we start today’s topic, let me start wit a couple of question: Is it possible to overcome unbelief? Where does unbelief come from?
In approaching God, one of the greatest hindrance is unbelief. Unbelief is the absence of faith. Thus, we need to overcome unbelief
Mark 9:19 – “You unbelieving generation, ..."
Mark 9:22 – “But if you can do anything … help us.”
Mark 9:23 – “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” (NLT) … “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
Mark 9:24 – “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”
The story in Mark 9:14–29 explains three facts about moving from Unbelief to Believe
Our predicament – (Mark 9:14–22) It seems that there are more reasons (evidences) not to believe. We have predicaments or difficult and unpleasant situations in our lives. Thus, unbelief is rampant. Unbelief feeds on our predicaments. Sadly, our predicaments becomes as evidences for our unbelief. Unbelief incites logic and mere feelings. Unbelief feeds on the impossibility of our situations. And since there is huge acceptance from many people, unbelief flourishes (Mark 9:19 – “You unbelieving generation, ...") . However, our needs say otherwise. We know that many of our predicaments require something supernatural (Mark 9:22 – “But if you can do anything … help us.”). In this area, God can come into place within our lives and our predicament. `
The Evidence of God – (Mark 9:23 – “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” (NLT) … “Anything is possible if a person believes.”) the existence of a supernatural God is a fact. It is never dependent on the number of people who believes. God exists. God rewards faith. And to the Creator God, the supernatural is natural. Thus, we need to understand, to know, and to encounter God in the supernatural. The supernatural must become natural. Moreover, people need to encounter God’s truth through His Word. And I need to encounter God’s love. The evidence of God is revealed in three encounters: the truth encounter, the supernatural encounter, and the love encounter. In Mark 9:25–27, The evidence of God is revealed in three encounters was experience by the Father and his child.
The Challenge to Believe – (Mark 9:24 – “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!”). Now stands the challenge to believe. And there are times we need to be honest to God and tell him to help us overcome our unbelief. In verse 24, you will notice God part and our part. Our part is to “choose” to believe. God’s art is to give us faith. This process of choosing to believe and acknowledging our need of God results in our experience of the supernatural.
Conclusion:
You can still encounter God. Your difficult and unpleasant situations can never limit God. God is real. If you choose to believe Him, He will help you overcome your unbelief.
