INTRODUCTION

My first week here we looked at the Bible and why we know we can trust it, this week we will look at the charge for those who handle it.
Context
Paul is late in life and writing this instruction to a young pastor Timothy
2 Timothy 4:1–9 CSB
1 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of his appearing and his kingdom: 2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. 4 They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time for my departure is close. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 There is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved his appearing. 9 Make every effort to come to me soon,

The Charge (V.1-2)

2 Timothy 4:1–2 CSB
1 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of his appearing and his kingdom: 2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and encourage with great patience and teaching.
Paul here warns Timothy of the hudge responsibility of dealing with the word of God
dealing with the word of God must be taken seriously!
I Charge you
1. Before God
2. Before Jesus who is going to Judge the living and the dead and because of his appearing and his kingdom:
THe Charge is before Jesus Christ
Jesus Christ will
Judge the living
Judge the dead the dead
He will judge ministers of the Word for how we handle the Scripture
so what is the charge?
Preach the Word!
be ready in season
out of season;
correct,
rebuke,
encourage
Do all of this with with great patience and teaching.
What does it mean to Preach the Word?
It does not mean to...
preach the newspaperr
or tv news
or opinions
it is far to common that pulpits all over this countery are filled with opinions and not the word…
remember the command...
Preach the Word!
A Biblical exegetical message is based upon and completly saturated with scripture The importance of this command can not be overstated God communicated the Bible to us to provide nourshment and instruction rember what 2 tim says
2 Timothy 3:16 CSB
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
Scripture is to
teach…What is right
reprove…What is Not right
correct…How to get right
and train....How to stay right
nothing else will work
The Bible is the only piece of litteture in the World that can change lives
if it is that powerful and we try to make it fit our own agenda we are on DANGEROUS GROUND
Hebrews 4:12 CSB
12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
He goes on from Preaching the word...
Be ready in season Be ready when it is easy
Be ready out of season be ready when it is not easy
The Pastor/teacher must be ready for biblical instruction weather he feels like it, it is convienion, weather it is papular
He goes on the respobsibility continues to
Thse instructions were also found above in 1 tim 3:16
correct
What is not right
rebuke...
What is not right (stronger than simply correcting
encourage
Not only is a pastor to watch over the flock and reprove and rebuke sin but also awe are to speak words of encourgment and hope to all.
with great patience and teaching.
The pastor must be sure that he is teaching what is right, and true this accompinies the....
corraction
rebuke
and encougemnet
What do we need to do?
We understand it is the word of God speaking not the speaker
Preachers who spoute opinions or try to make the passage fit their agenda are a problum
We need to make our worldview fit the scripture not the scripture fit our worldview
lets again observe Hebres 4:12
Hebrews 4:12 CSB
12 For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
The Bible is not about our thoughts, agendas or anything else it is all about Him. We need to listen to the Preaching of the Word and the preacher needs to preach the Word!

The comming time (V. 3-4)

2 Timothy 4:3–4 CSB
3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear. 4 They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.
Does this sound Filmiliar?
1.People will not endure sound teaching
2. They will accumulate teachers who will tell them what they want to hear
3. they will turn from truth and turn to myths
This is why understanding and good preperation of the Word of God is so important....
if we do not take the Word of God seriously we can accedntly spout hericy..
weather you are a pastor or a sunday School teacher preperation is expected!
Some examples
1. some say today “I don’t need traing I am just called to preach”
A wise man once said if I had three years to serve the Lord I would spend the first two preparing
2. Others say scholership is not importent Im just going to do WHat the spirit tells me
if we do not spend time studying the word of God we will commit several dangerous errors.
We need to teach truth and preperation is Key
What is exegetical preaching?

Right Now (V.5-6)

2 Timothy 4:5–6 CSB
5 But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time for my departure is close.
Paul instructs timothy to
1. Keep His mind on Spiritual things
2. Do the work of an evangelist
3. fulfil his ministery
Keep your mind on spiritual things
• Paul tells timothy to be sober minded, the word of God must be the focus of any individual especially that of the pastor
Do the work of an evangelist
• We must be evangelizing falure to do so is sin
Fulfil your ministery
•every ministery is different Paul here calls upon Timothy to fulfil his
The drink offering
• this would have been wine pured upon an alter paul references this here because it symbolized devotion and sacrifice
• Paul knows the time of his death is near and it is time for someone else. that someone else is Timothy.

The reward (V.7-10)

2 Timothy 4:7–10 CSB
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 There is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me, but to all those who have loved his appearing. 9 Make every effort to come to me soon, 10 because Demas has deserted me, since he loved this present world, and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia.
Paul reminises here of his own ministery, we talked about crowns a few weeks ago so I will not get into that here but Paul is refering to the crown of richesness for keeping the corse
Paul finally reminds Timothy that the Lord is a richous judge and he will reward accordingly
What Now
listen to the preaching of the word
even if you are not preaching you should study the word of God daily
Accept correction, rebuke, and training none of us, should have the attitude that we have arrived
