Outline 1:

Intro/Welcome
Coming Home
Prop: You cannot become whole without coming home.
Repentance is returning home.
Repent from sinful heart:
in response to wounds
the decisions we make.
Pray
Sin makes repentance necessary for restoration
Anything not of faith is sin - Romans 14
Sin always separates and leads to death
Guilt/Shame follows Sin (Gen 3)\
Emotions: These are indicators that something is off
Normal Response to Sin?
hide (from God and each other), denial, blame-shift
Not from psychology today but from God’s way (word)
What is repentance?
Returning Home — turning back to the lord and running towards him rather than away from him.
Hell is the result of never turning back to God, never returning home.
God had to do something to get our attention, something so radical, so scandalous so grotesque that it would stop us in our tracks and we would come to our sense
like driving by an accident on the highway and you can’t help but look
This was the Cross.
Only one thing could overcome our sin, shame, self-contempt and endless escapes: God’s love.
Confession & Expression
Acknowledge this sin (Psalm 32)
Relieves so much weight and shame (Genesis 3)
Grieve the sin and its affects
Godly Sorrow vs. Worldly Regret (2 Cor 7:10)
We really struggle with this one.
To be broken of our sin
We don’t really grieve, b/c we don’t really see the depth of sin
Imagine a perfectly white sheet, fine silk 4000 thread count
Sin is thrashing that thing with red paint
Psalm 51 really walks us through the process
Psalm 51:1–6 ESV
1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Psalm 51:8 ESV
8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.
Psalm 51:17 ESV
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Forgiveness & Cleanliness
Repentance is an appeal to God for mercy and grace
Psalm 51:7-12
It magnifies the cross
The Cross maintains justice and mercy
It is about receiving forgiveness.
It’s about experiencing forgiveness — God’s love channeled through the cross
lining up the right flow of water
Forgiveness (mercy & grace) is available to us, we just need to recieve it
there’s only one store that sells it, and it’s given away freely
It’s too good to be true.
God Forgives us and cleanses us.
from the defilement of sin.
wash me, renew a right spirit.
Worship through joy, praise and proclamation
True repentance is a joy, refreshing (Psalm 32)
It is the joy of your salvation
I will worship you, rightly restored
I will teach others and they will return to you.

Fellowship of the Cross

The vertical repentance opens the door to horizontal repentance
it is a behavioral change that comes from a deeper heart change.
When repentance & healing come together then redemption, reconciliaion and restoration is possible.
restitution/consequences.
it allows the door to be opened
it is removing the obstacles for sin (Isa 57)

Application:

What do you need to repent of?
What have you been unwilling to repent of?
Do you want to become whole?
Do you want to run freely this race set before us?
Hebrews 12:1–3 ESV
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
