WHEN THE 70 WEEKS ARE TO BEGIN
They were to begin when a certain commandment should go forth “to restore and to build Jerusalem.”
But there were at least 4 such royal commands given at different times:
1. The Decree Of Cyrus The Persian Conqueror (Ezra 1:1-2). This was approximately 536 B.C. according to Ussher’s chronology.
2. The Decree of Darius The Mede (Ezra 6:1-15). This was approximately 520 B.C. (Ussher)
3. The Decree Of Artaxerxes In The 7th Year Of His Reign (Ezra 7:11-18). This decree was given to Ezra approximately 457 B.C.
(Ussher)
4. The Decree Of Artaxerxes In The 20th Year Of His Reign (Neh. 1:1-4, 2:1-8). This decree was given to Nehemiah approximately 444 B.C. (Ussher)
THE 70 WEEKS WERE TO BEGIN WITH -
“the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem.”
We believe the evidence is clear that it was Cyrus who gave the commandment which restored the people to Jerusalem so that it could be built—both the city and the temple.
DANIELS’S PROPHECY BREAKDOWN
In Daniel’s 70-Weeks Prophecy, the first sixty-nine weeks of Daniel’s prophecy are the period of time (69 weeks x 7 years/week = 483 years)
between the decree for the captive Jews in Babylon to return to Israel to restore and rebuild Jerusalem,
and the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
4. EIGHT REASONS FOR THE TRIBULATION PERIOD
To fulfill prophecy • Daniel 9:24
To defeat Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet • Revelation 19-20
To uphold Jerusalem’s cause and punish those who mistreat the Jews • Isaiah 34:8
To punish Israel for sinning • Micah 7:9
To embarrass the Jews and cause them to accept Jesus as their Messiah • Zechariah 13:8-9
To punish those who claim Israel’s land • Ezekiel 36:1-38
To punish the inhabitants of the earth for sin • Isaiah 24:1-6; 26:20-21
