I wanted to do something different tonight…
This is one of my favorite hymns, maybe not my favorite, but close to the top!
It was written in 1863 by Charitie Bancroft.
I think the main theme of this song is security, and as I thought about security I started to think about a ride I have been on a couple times, the sling shot.
You get strapped into a chair which is connected to some bungie cords…
There are some truly evil people who work this ride who like to play jokes on people going on the ride…
Show the video of the seatbelt prank.
That’s a situation where you want to feel secure! We’re going to talk about a much more important kind of security tonight…
Jesus has saved us and holds our place with God in Heaven.
PRAY
This first verse is about his love for us.
Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea
A great High Priest whose name is love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart
I know that while in heav'n He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart
No tongue can bid me thence depart
A great High Priest
Hebrews 4:14 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
The High Priest in the Old Covenant (before Jesus) had the job of…
Hebrews 7:25 ESV
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
He is there, interceding for us!
My boys like to tattle tale on each other. I try to teach them not to do that, but instead to try to get each other out of trouble. First by discouraging each other from doing things they shouldn’t. That usually doesn’t work!
But some times I’ll nudge them to try and talk me and their mom out of punishing. I try to get them to intercede for each other and then I tell them about how Jesus intercedes for us before the Father. Telling Him that He died for us and we are covered by his blood!
“graven on his hands”
Isaiah 49:16 ESV
Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.
If you carve something onto your hand, you aren’t going to forget about it. It’s there forever!
“no tongue can bid me thence depart”
John 10:28–29 ESV
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
The second verse talk about what Jesus did for us.
When Satan tempts me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the Just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me
To look on Him and pardon me
“when Satan… guilt within
Revelation 12:10 ESV
And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.
He is accusing the people of God, hoping to find some who will go astray. But Jesus has thrown him down and will send him to Hell forever when He returns! he is our defender!
“my sinful soul is counted free”
1 Peter 2:24 ESV
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Just go through each line here and explain how substitution works.
The penalty for our sin has been paid for!
This is like if you got in trouble at school and got ISS… what would you get ISS for?
So you’re supposed to have ISS, but one of your teachers goes for you and pays that penalty for you.
This last verse expresses amazement at how great God is and the rejoicing in being his.
Behold Him there, the risen Lamb
My perfect, spotless Righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM
The King of glory and of grace
One with Himself, I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood
My life is hid with Christ on high
With Christ my Savior and my God
Psalm 147:5 ESV
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
He is the lamb…
He is unchangeable, that’s in his name…
This great God purchased our lives.
1 Peter 1:18–19 ESV
knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
God’s wrath against sin had to be shown, and Jesus’ sacrifice made a way for it to not be shown toward us!
We belong to Him, we are safe and secure in Him because Jesus is our High Priest, our intercessor, our sacrifice, our Savior.
Hebrews 10:19–22 ESV
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
lead or play the song
We all have sin in our lives, and there is a penalty for sin. Either you will pay that penalty, or Jesus has already paid that penalty. It’s a question of if you will place your faith in Him or not…
There’s no other way to be saved. And once you are, you are secured in your place with God because your soul has been purchased and your life is hid with Christ!
