Yes, we're doing things a little bit different this morning. And we are going to focus our attention on the Lord's Supper. So this is going to be primarily longer communion thought so just think of it that way. So as we consider the Lord's Supper this morning, we just sang that song Victory in Jesus. That's what it's all about. Victory in Jesus. That's why we do the things we do because of Jesus right? There's a little old football video of Bill Parcells used to coach the New York Giants and it was during the Super Bowl and they were losing and he got down in front of his players on his knees and he said men this is what we need to do. This is why we lift all those weights during the year. This is why we run all those runs we do. This is why we get in shape to be ready for the last quarter to get it done. Right? That was a motivating factor the same way. That's what the cross is about Red Cross Automotive to be the person that Jesus wants us to be and so we consider the Lord's Supper this morning. We're considering that which is primarily Heart all the supper that we are to focus on that's his his death. So if I were to give you the purpose for the Lord's Supper, I'll be found in 1st Corinthians chapter 11 verse 26. We'll get to that in just a moment. They're says we proclaim the Lord's death till he come. We Proclaim that's what we preach the Lord's death till he come not want us to think about that. He didn't say we proclaim the father or we proclaim the Holy Spirit. We proclaim the Lord's death. We were claiming his death until who comes until he comes it's about Jesus. That's what it's about Jesus and it's about his death. And I know that sometimes we perhaps give a communion prayer and we might say we thank you for the death burial and resurrection of Christ. And I guess that comes basically from 1st Corinthians chapter 15 beginning verse 1 and 3/4 bore over brother if I took more of a brother not clearly the gospel, which I appreciate you. Which also you received by which you stand where on your also saved if you keep in memory or holdfast the war Which I appreciate you ride deliver. Don't you first of all, which I also receive that Christ died for our sins. There is a purpose. Christ came to die. For our sins. Yes. There was a birth. Yes, he had a wife in between but the purpose that's what we're getting at. The purpose is his death. He died for what are since therefore there's a direct connection between the Lord's Supper in our sins. He died for our sins. He was buried and then he was raised again the third day according to the scriptures. So a lot of people will say that's what we need to think about while I'm telling you that in that particular password. There's no evidence that Jesus or Paul or anybody that's repeating the passage of the Lord's Supper is telling us to remember everything about Jesus Christ, right? He's not telling us to remember his birth not telling us to remember his resurrection and as important as the resurrection is and we need to consider the resurrection. It's at this moment. It's at this moment. He says you think about his death. You Proclaim his death. You think about the significance of his death? You think about the significance of the Cross why he was nailed there? And so those things are important but those are the things that are necessary to be in our minds and we'll get to that in just a second. So again talking about the Lord's supper and here we find Luke chapter 22, then he took the cup notice. He took the car. Any gas tanks and said take this and divide it. Now we have some brethren who will make it a point to show that he took a cup. Therefore. We must have one cup. And of course, we've passed out cups plural, so they wanted everybody to come up and drink out of that one cup. Well, if you want to talk about Zeke up then we better go back to Jerusalem and find that V cup the cup pictures of the Apostles use notice. He says he took the cup and he had them divided it among themselves. That is two separate. They poured it into their own glasses or cups. I took a picture. The cup and a divided amongst themselves. However, the whole purpose here is that they separated from the cup they divided it among themselves. So and to bolster that fact that says I want a drink of the fruit of the Vine. It's the fruit of the vine that we're drinking in a bar taking up. Not the cop.

Accomplishment is mere circumstantial. It's the fruit of the vine in Jesus makes it very clear. He says until the kingdom of God Comes This is my body which is given for you do this in remembrance of me this cup the contents of the cover. It's a figure of speech this cup is the New Covenant in my blood which is shed for you. So the whole purpose here is to show us that we are to proclaim the death that we are to proclaim the emblems associated with his death mainly the body and the blood of Our Savior Jesus Christ. Now we come in the 1st Corinthians chapter 11, we often read this quite a bit because it gives a full picture of that Paul had in mind. And which the Holy Spirit gave him to speak about he says where I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you that the Lord Jesus on the same manner in which he was betrayed took bread. YouTube Red they have protection is that it's an unleavened bread. We read that elsewhere. And when we consider the background of the Lord's supper with must think about the Passover, I'm not telling us to think about the Passover during the Lord's Supper but for informational purposes the background on the Lord's Supper is the Passover. That's the purpose of why Jesus and the apostles went to the upper room to celebrate the Passover meal and we can read about that in the book of Exodus and involved in the Passover feast was an unspotted and unblemished lamb. lamb And so atom that Passover background, we find Jesus being the unspotted sinless perfect unblemished.

He is the Lamb. and so that blood that they put on the floor post of their houses when they were in Egypt when the death angel came the death angel passed over the door posts because they put blood on them. That was it. That's what they were commanded to do. You remember that and so it was the blood of the sacrificial lamb that save them and out of that background the Lord institutes his supper and we called a supper now because it's the meal that we normally think about well because it's a spiritual feast We need upon his body and his blood and other words. It's a representation of making Jesus part of us. the bill with him You know, we reading John chapter 6 about break break break the bread of life right there. He's talking about the word of God talking about break them to watch the bread of my teachers about this bread. But in a Dua Leti of thought Jesus not only brings the New Covenant the New Testament in his blood his teaching. But he himself is the bread. The bread of life the lies that he gives member. He says the words that I speak to you. They are spirit and they are life. That's how he gives life when we obey what he says. It's so when we obey what he says, what do we do? We get baptized we take the Lord's Supper we continue to meet with one another. That's the purpose. That's the cross is why we do those things the cross is why we assemble here today. It's the cross. It's Jesus. It's all about Jesus and children make it about him. So he took the bread is the unleavened bread unleavened the word on the leaven. It's a it's something that you know, of course, you know a rises in the bread, right and it will take over consume the whole thing that it's in and edit Paul uses that description right here in the Church of Corinth saying a little leaven leavens the whole lump he says there's a little similar to church and just like the leaven it can rise and take over the church pretty soon everyone sitting and what good is what good is the body of Christ if that's if that's the way it's going to be the unleavened bread is a purebred. It has nothing to do with sin. And so it is with the cup, you know, some people will say well can we not take fermented wine as opposed to unfermented wine has the same analogy the purity of the thing. What we're talking about is what what Jesus said the fruit of the vine that is being described. It a non fermented wine Basics. That's what he's talking about. The fruit of the vine was always the sweet wine. It wasn't the fermented. That's what he's referring to here. So I understand the words the meaning of word how words are used in context and see how many times are used in that way that makes all the difference in the world and how we interpret things and to be consistent so he took the bread and when he had given thanks some translation says he blessed it. That's what a blessing it is when I bless the bread or someone blesses the cup we're giving thanks for the bread. We're giving thanks for the cup. That's what that means. So he broke it and said take eat. This is my body, which is broken for you do this in remembrance of me. In the same manner you also took the cup after supper supper saying this cup is the New Covenant in my blood this do as often as you drink it in remembrance of me for as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup you proclaim the Lord's death till he comes noticed. He doesn't say you Proclaim his resurrection reclaim the Holy Spirit you proclaim the father you Proclaim this before find that all those are great legitimate things which we could talk about and other times what he says when you come together to do this, You Proclaim and focus and think about the Lord's death and you do that to win. Joey comes till he comes. Yes. Jesus was resurrected. Yes. Jesus is alive. Yes, Jesus Is With Us Whenever two or three are gathered in his name and he's in our presents all that true. But the purpose of the supper is what Jesus himself said. That's exactly what the apostles went on to Proclaim to us, which was we Proclaim we exalt we teach we Harold the Lord's death in only his death until he comes before the emphasis on the death and I don't have this passage with us, but I want us to think about Isaiah chapter 53. Isaiah chapter 53 hypocritical passes because it's a Messianic promised prophecy about Jesus is coming what he was going to do. This is about 750 years before the Lord would come it's so Isaiah and Isaiah 53 beginning of verse for is talking about Jesus talking about the Messiah and what he was going to do for his people and that's what he says in verse for surely. She can surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows yet. We esteem him stricken Smitten by God and Afflicted, but he was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement for our peace was upon him and by his stripes we are healed a lot of people go to that verse the last part of that passage and by his stripes we are healed a lot of people fake. Well, that means that if I get sick and I go to the hospital. Gohil me. You got to ask for your Miracle now, you can get that miracle. If you give us $1,000 he promised you give us $1,000 today. I'll make sure that promise was fulfilled and your will be healed. Whatever your malady is will be a lot of people. We like to just eat it all up. That's because we're getting rid of this.

But why is he saying when he says by his stripes we are healed. What's the contact? We just read Verses 4 through 6. What did he say? He said he carried our sorrows. We esteemed him stricken Smitten by God Afflicted. He was wounded what for our transgressions that's in.

He was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our anomia. Remember that word without Lawless Flawless acts iniquity sin. So therefore he heals. Are some people lives he's talking about spiritual matters, if he's not talking about our physical maladies our physical problems. And so we need to keep the context in its proper perspective so death. He was going to die. But just before he was going to die. He was going to be wounded and he was going to be bruised. That is he was going to be beating. It over and over again the apostles proclaimed not only the death of Jesus Christ for what else? his suffering his suffering this suffering is tied directly to his death. It was proclaimed that he was going to suffer for you and me not just merely die, but suffer and die for our sins. It's so when we come to the Lord's Supper we need to keep in mind his suffering. his death on our behalf for our sin. That's what we need to be thinking why we go back to Usher if I have that but if you go back to 1st Corinthians chapter 11 1st Corinthians chapter 11.

Says we proclaim the Lord's death till he comes verse 26 and then verse 27 is directly related to that. He says therefore. Whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord but let a man examine himself and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cups there for when it comes to the Lord's Supper. We need to be examining ourselves. What how well I think in relationship to his death? Why did he died for our sins when I sit and I contemplate the Lord's Supper? And I were taking that emblem called the bread or taking the emblem called the fruit of the vine. I'm thinking of my sins. Indirect relationship to his death. That's why he ducked. He died not four years ago. He did but I make it personal he died for me. my shitt that's what's important to me. Myson. I want to go to heaven. Tell me what I must do. I must do it. So I think about that I think about how Jesus died not only don't know how he suffered anything about that little lamb. A little lamb that would be sacrificed and that blood drain from the animal. He think about Jesus because he's the unspotted lamb. He's the simplest perfectly and yeah, he was willing to die for me. That's what I think about and I think about how grateful I am that he did that for me because we send we sing. The nasty word that three letter word sin. But it's true. And yet he says. You need to think about what I have done for you. That's the purpose of the Lord's supper. And the grand thing about it is we do it on the first day of the week the very first day of the week. We're reminded and reminding ourselves of what Jesus did for us to help us through the remainder of the week until we meet again to what to Proclaim this again until he comes the beautiful thing. It shows the unity though. There are things that are outgrowth of that far and other Lord's Supper. We do it together communally. As a family we do it together. Yes, we're doing and thinking things differently but together we're doing it. But that's what he calls us for. That's the purpose of when we do it. Paul was traveling to troas and says when the disciples came together on the first day of the week to break bread. There. It is to break bread referring to the Lord's Supper. And Paul waited a whole week to do it. He could have taken the Lord's supper. If the Lord's Supper is to be taken at any time. You want to he could have taken it on Monday. He could have taken it on Wednesday on Saturday, but it said he waited the whole week in order for him to be with the disciples to take that Lord's Supper.

So when people say well you can take it anytime you can take it monthly. You can take a quarterly can take a yearly could take it everyday, whatever. What did they do? There are the example in Jesus tells it finally follow my words follow my Apostles words follow their example, follow their words. So it's not about us. It's about his desire just teaching. It's always fine here in the instruction that the lord gave us is that they did so on the first day of the week it when we tell me the 1st Corinthians chapter 16 verses 1 and 2 where we are to talk about the contribution the offering he says that you lay by and store that I don't have to come and get him pick this up. But you do so every first day of the week what they were already meeting on the first day of the week. So he said hey what better time for you to give then the first day of the week when your gather and I kind of gives us another thought they were meeting a lot summer probably meeting every day, but not the entire church. You know people do have to work people do have to make a living people do have families. But those people that could beat did me but the people that worked. Well, we understand that they gather together on the first day of the week to do that. Not just a fellowship and not just a simple. But to remember the Lord's death until he comes and I find it interesting and you've heard me say this before. You were talking about the Lord's death in Resurrection in chapter 15 of the book of 1st Corinthians talking about again that Jesus died according to the scriptures for our sins that he was buried and that he was raised again the third day according to the scriptures that stuff for 15 and then chapter 16. What did you say now concerning the collection? What are the relationship there it's not there just willy-nilly he's talking about the Lord's resurrection. And then he's reminding Them Look what Jesus gave to you? No, the whole thought is now what you can give back to Jesus. Contribution wise that's what he's referring to hear. There is a direct relationship to that and no man could take that out of scripture or provoked that anyway, it's there. It's there for us in our learning. So he says now concerning the collection of the Saints as I've given orders to the churches of galatia. So you also must do Turn on the first day of the week. Let each one of you lay something aside storing up. That is put something in the treasury. Put something in the Treasure storing up. Storing a batch of Treasury lot of people say you show me the word treasury in the Bible. I'll show you the concept. Storing up means treasury. What are you storing up money? What for? Her needs there's you treasury so that's the purpose and that's how it's related to the Lord's Supper. But we're talkin about the Lord's supper. And we're talking about the focus is always Upon Jesus. It's upon his death. It's upon his death for our sins. It's upon his suffering that he went to the Cross his willingness to die there for me. I can't think of a person.

Who if you told them that here's what you can do for your loved ones? You can be tortured and then you can die a Despicable death on the cross. naked before people I wonder how many of us would raise our hands say, okay, I'll do it. Just the same. What Jesus did that? He said I'll do it just to say as much as he despised the shame of it all but he did it for you and for me. And so I just want to leave those thoughts with us as we get ready for tape of the Lord's supper and think about what Jesus did for you what Jesus did for the world he died for the entire world buddy. He died for all of us. He especially died for the church, which he purchased with his own blood. and we'll talk about

we'll talk about an invitation but Jesus gives us an invitation right here. He invites us to this supper. And you can be a part of that supper if you've been baptized because that's what it's for. It's for Christians. It's for those who have obey the Lord. We don't turn anybody away, but it's certainly the whole actors for the church for the Christians. And as for you and for me, and of course. There are those who perhaps wandered away. And because you wanted way you didn't have the ethicacy the power of that blood the power of the supper because it's the supper that Paul says strengthens us. Slices of pizza that's why many of you are weak and sick. Because you're not doing it properly. You're not taking it properly. You're not focusing Upon Jesus. You're there. Just eating a piece of bread and drinking down some grape juice what it amounts to what he says. Here's how you need to do it. Think about Jesus think about his body. That's what the bread represents think about the blood that's what the cup where the fruit of the vine represents and examine yourselves. Why because I need Jesus and without his death and without the shedding of his blood and the giving up of his body. I'm going to hell and we talked about that last week. Jesus came to save us from hell. at exactly a good reason to think more about the Lord and his supper this morning as we do that now.
