What are the 10 C’s?
How to remember the 10 C’s

Intro

Grab:
We left a thunderous scene (Exo 19:16-19)
Exodus 19:16–19 CSB
On the third day, when morning came, there was thunder and lightning, a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud blast from a ram’s horn, so that all the people in the camp shuddered. Then Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Mount Sinai was completely enveloped in smoke because the Lord came down on it in fire. Its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. As the sound of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him in the thunder.
Whatever God says next, He’ll have their attention

++ But … how does Jesus show up in Exodus?

Yahweh’s Thundering Ten Words of Covenant (Exo 20:1-21)

Thunderous scene - don’t forget chap 19 when you read chapt 20
“Decalogue” = “Ten Words”
RV w/ egs:
Words b4 10W:
These are not arbitrary rules
++(Exo 20:1-2)
Exodus 20:1–2 CSB
Then God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
“I AM this and I did that … now 10 Words for you”
The Ten Words: (Exo 20:3-17)
Familiar: “Thou shalt not …”
How to be like God: Each cmdt is a reflection of the holy, exclusive, worked and rested, established family, life, faithfulness, treat each image bearer with respect, provides, truth
But without being like Adam and Eve, who tried to be like God in the wrong way
You’re gonna Bear His name ~ resemble His char OR in vain
Reaction to 10W:
++ (img) Let’s get Mikey!
++ (Exo 20:18-21)
Exodus 20:18–21 CSB
All the people witnessed the thunder and lightning, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the mountain surrounded by smoke. When the people saw it they trembled and stood at a distance. “You speak to us, and we will listen,” they said to Moses, “but don’t let God speak to us, or we will die.” Moses responded to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, so that you will fear him and will not sin.” And the people remained standing at a distance as Moses approached the total darkness where God was.
Tag: ++ “I AM this, and I did that … therefore be like Me and do as I do”
Reveal >>> resemble
The whole purpose of the Law = resemble God
JC:
How do you see JC show up? []
++ “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father” (John 14:9)
JC didn’t just keep the rules really well - He resembles His Father perfectly
We thank JC for fulfilling every bit of the 10W + entire OT Law, but He did more than that - He perfectly resembles His Father, fulfilling the whole purpose of the Law
The Law was a reflection of God’s character, and following the Law makes you more like Him - JC was this perfectly, the “exact representation of his nature” (Heb 1:3)

Pure Altars (Exo 20:22-26)

RV w/ egs:
Training wheels altar ++ (img)
No idols: again
Altar: earth and unspoiled rocks, not step over that exposes your private parts to the altar
You’re gonna see Canaanites. who do a lot of weird things with altars; what I’m about to tell you to do may look similar, but don’t do as they do
Elaborate Tab is coming, but let’s start w/most important feature: not ornate, but pure - let’s get that part right
10C in RW: no other gods, no idols, nothing careless, nothing idolatrous, nothing common
++ (Exo 20:24) All about God’s name, not yours
Exodus 20:24 CSB
“Make an earthen altar for me, and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your flocks and herds. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I cause my name to be remembered.
Tag: ++ We’re all in this for name recognition - not ours, but His, to make His well-known and honored among all peoples
JC:
How do you see JC show up? []
++ (Php 2:8-11)
Philippians 2:8–11 CSB
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death— even to death on a cross. For this reason God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow— in heaven and on earth and under the earth— and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Laws about Personhood (Exo 21:1-22:20)

RV w/ egs:
Slaves: Those in debt to you, treat with dignity, male + female (^forcibly, v. 16) (Exo 21:1-11)
Personhood: ++ (img) (Exo 21:12-36)
Lex talionis ++ (Exo 21:24)
Exodus 21:24 CSB
eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
LT affirms each one’s (equal) value - doesn’t matter who you are
Your tooth = my tooth”
Property: repay if steal, if caught breaking and entering, etc. (Exo 22:1-15)
Stay on the playing field: seduction, witches, bestiality, idolatry … all bad (Exo 22:16-20)
10C in RW: ^idols, ^steal, ^false testimony, ^covet
Tag: ++ In God’s Kingdom, every citizen has undeniable worth and dignity - civil rules apply equally - this is radical lawmaking
JC:
How do you see JC show up? []
++ “But I say to you ...” (Matt 5:38-39)
Matthew 5:38–39 CSB
“You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I tell you, don’t resist an evildoer. On the contrary, if anyone slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
JC gives us greater value than lex talionis does
More than “your tooth = my tooth” —> even more value (the people JC mentions are poor, bullies, unfair - still have value)

Laws about the Vulnerable (Exo 22:21-23:9)

RV w/ egs:
Because the vulnerable are exploitable … don’t (Exo 22:21-27)
Being God’s Holy people means not holding back from God (Exo 22:28-31) ++ (Exo 22:31)
Exodus 22:31 CSB
“Be my holy people. You must not eat the meat of a mauled animal found in the field; throw it to the dogs.
More than not exploiting, seek justice (Exo 23:1-9) ++ (img)
10C in RW: worship God only, ^steal, ^false witness, ^covet
Tag: ++ Worshiping God and seeking justice for others overlap - sequence: ^exploit, don’t hold back, seek justice - worshiping God is in the middle of how we treat others
JC
How do you see JC show up? []
++ “Whatever you did for one of the least … you did for Me” (Mt 25:40)
Matthew 25:40 CSB
“And the King will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
JC says that how you treat the vulnerable is how you treat Him - worshiping God is in the middle of how we treat others
In the Parable, it’s the “King” … the opposite of the least … said how you treat the least is how you treat Me … the King

Laws about Work and Not-work (Exo 23:10-19)

RV w/ egs:
Work: ++ (Exo 23:10, 12)
Exodus 23:10 CSB
“Sow your land for six years and gather its produce.
Exodus 23:12 CSB
“Do your work for six days but rest on the seventh day so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave as well as the resident alien may be refreshed.
But then don’t work ++ (Exo 23:10-19)
Exodus 23:10–19 CSB
“Sow your land for six years and gather its produce. But during the seventh year you are to let it rest and leave it uncultivated, so that the poor among your people may eat from it and the wild animals may consume what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove. “Do your work for six days but rest on the seventh day so that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female slave as well as the resident alien may be refreshed. “Pay strict attention to everything I have said to you. You must not invoke the names of other gods; they must not be heard on your lips. “Celebrate a festival in my honor three times a year. Observe the Festival of Unleavened Bread. As I commanded you, you are to eat unleavened bread for seven days at the appointed time in the month of Abib, because you came out of Egypt in that month. No one is to appear before me empty-handed. Also observe the Festival of Harvest with the firstfruits of your produce from what you sow in the field, and observe the Festival of Ingathering at the end of the year, when you gather your produce from the field. Three times a year all your males are to appear before the Lord God. “You must not offer the blood of my sacrifices with anything leavened. The fat of my festival offering must not remain until morning. “Bring the best of the firstfruits of your land to the house of the Lord your God. “You must not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.
What God is building is Trust - it takes trust for an agrarian society to not work 1 day out of 7, especially during planting and harvesting seasons
But more: Godwardness (orient), esp as provider, never giving credit to not-God (e.g. skills)
So, regularly do some not-work so that we don’t worship not-God
And don’t boil your kids in milk (Exo 23:19) (fertility ritual, therefore credit; ~ crossing your fingers or knocking on wood)
10C in RW: Sabbath, but first … work! (Exo 20:9-10)
Tag: ++ “For God’s sake, rest!” (img), for God’s sake (rest for Godwardness; orient)
JC:
How do you see JC show up? []
++ “It is finished” (Jn 19:30) - JC gives us the true Sabbath
John 19:30 CSB
When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
++ “I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28) - “For God’s sake, rest in Me!”
Matthew 11:28 CSB
“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

The Force of a Covenant (Exo 23:20-24:11)

RV w/ egs:
“I will do this, but you must do that ...” / “we’ll do it!” (Exo 23:20-33)
RS: angel guide, drive out foreigners, land; you obey, ^idols, ^covenants w/them
If you follow, good things, but if don’t, bad things
B/c God’s name is @ stake, not yours
Marked with: pledge, blood, send up leaders to meet w/YHWH
~ treaty negotiations
Better, ~ wedding
The markers cannot be denied (can deny you made a decision in your head, but you can’t deny being sprinkled with blood)
Eventually drive out the nations, but not too fast
Eating and drinking a covenant (Exo 24:1-11) -
++ (img, table)
++ (Exo 24:11)
Exodus 24:11 CSB
God did not harm the Israelite nobles; they saw him, and they ate and drank.
Table fellowship w/covenant partners
[(Exo 24:1) Nadab, Abihu didn’t stick]
10C in RW: ^take name in vain; God’s name at stake
Tag: ++ Something’s gotta bleed and we gotta settle this at the table
JC:
How do you see JC show up? [] (something’s gotta bleed and we gotta settle this at the table)
++ “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood...” (John 6:53)
John 6:53 CSB
So Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves.
They ate and drank a covenant in Exo 24:8
Table fellowship with covenant partners
JC!
We re-enact that once a month with the Lord’s Supper

Moses has 40 Days with Yahweh (Exo 24:12-18)

RV w/ egs:
M went up to get the published version of YHWH’s Thundering 10 Words of Covenant … 1st Edition
Scary! No “small still voice”; this Law thing is a pretty big deal to God - even tho He knows no one will be able to measure up to it; bigger things afoot than standards of good behavior - He’s setting up our need for a Savior, so it’s a monumental event - bigger than even Moses realized
Also sets up Exo 32: xfer CovH + he’s gone + (we’ve already got the gold from plundering the Egyptians), with at least 3 (???) reminders about idols in just today’s passage alone
10C in RW: concrete tablets
Tag: ++ “Our God is a consuming fire”
>>> burning bush was just a glimpse???
++ (img - the floor is lava)
JC:
How do you see JC show up? []
++ “… for 40 days to be tempted” (Lk 4:1-2)
Luke 4:1–2 CSB
Then Jesus left the Jordan, full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over, he was hungry.
++ “we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken” (Heb 12:28-29)
Hebrews 12:28–29 CSB
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful. By it, we may serve God acceptably, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.
Greater mountain
Consuming fire

Exo 20:1-24:18 according to Jesus

[call up worship]
[Remind RE social distancing]
++ “If you’ve seen me, you’ve seen the Father”
But Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come that have come … in the greater and more perfect tabernacle … he entered the most holy place once for all time
“But I say to you ...”
“Whatever you did for one of the least … you did for Me”
“It is finished” … “I will give you rest”
“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood...”
“… for 40 days to be tempted” … “we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken”
