Scripture

1 John 4:18–21 NRSV
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because he first loved us. Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.

Introduction

Today we are going to talk about Radical Hospitality. This is more than just being welcoming. This is part of who we are as disciples. We define it this way on our website: “The desire to invite, welcome, and affirm all  into our fellowship no matter their gender, race, income, sexual orientation, marital status, or age.”
This isn’t just being warm to folks when they get here it is being warm to folks out there as well. It is leading a life of hospitality to all you meet. This includes social media as well folks. We seem to forget that sometimes. I have seen some inhospitable comments from some of our folks! Make sure before you post something you look at it say “Will this do any harm?” If so don’t post it. Never forget our lives and words are invitations to fellowship wiht Christ. Are you living a life of inclusive and affirming invitation or one of judgmental exclusivism?
I say this because we all know the vitriol that is on social media right now. For some reason we cannot agree to disagree any more. We have to flame the person that does not agree with us. However this election turns out there will be poeple that will be ugly about it to others. Let’s congratulate those whose ticket when this election. Let’s pray for the newly elected folks. We are Christians Christ followers first and politicos second. let your faith define your political stance, not your political stance define your faith.
Here is what Wesley said about elections and as Methodists we need to take this to heart. This is from Wesley’s Journal on
“October 6, 1774 I met those of our society who had votes in the ensuing election, and advised them 1. To vote, without fee or reward, for the person they judged most worthy 2. To speak no evil of the person they voted against, and 3. To take care their spirits were not sharpened against those that voted on the other side.”
Good advice eh? John’s is even better:
1 John 4:21 NRSV
The commandment we have from him is this: those who love God must love their brothers and sisters also.
So let’s go to this scripture and see what the Spirit will unveil to us about radical Hospitality.
