It Is Necessary That I Jesus, Go through Samaria - Part 2
John 4:19-30 (KJV).
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
Introduction
As we continue in lock with the previous message, we come to understand the more why it was necessary for Jesus to go through Samaria. In paraphrasing for understanding; Jesus said the wind blows where you hear the sound, and so is everyone that is led by the spirit. As we have previous examined Jesus invokes truth is necessary to receive the living water of which she desired. She may have been embarrassed by Jesus reading her so openly, and emotionally opened of which countering spirits would seek to muse her and Jesus to lead them away into unproductive conversations. But the Master was at the controls countering all diverging efforts and leading her to take that drink, that would calm her thirst which would take away her shame. Now let us enter the conversation after the call; “Go get your husband and bring him here” and the confession; “I have no husband,” and the reading of her life.
1). Sir, I observe you that are a prophet
John 4:19-20
19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
Sir, I observe you that are a prophet
Like a deer caught in the headlights this woman humbles herself, and in humility like many others when confronted with their sin enters into a religious conversation. But Jesus is not deterred from this moment of conviction, for the word was nigh her, even in her ears and piercing her heart. This was a harvest moment, the first Samarian recorded in Scripture to hear and believe what Christ offered. But there’s a sly deceptive spirit in this moment that’s attempting to subvert the conversation and turn it away from salvation towards religion, and sometime in our personal witness we have experienced this also, but Jesus is not deterred. Let us take a look at the master at work breaking strongholds of religious dogma and theological points that binds and hinder souls from accepting true salvation.
Personal religious dogma or Theological points that divides
The woman stands convicted and no doubt in shame, and perhaps she brought up this conversation as saying I’m not as bad as it looks, I do know something about God and worship. Our Samarian fathers worshiped on this mountain she says; of which “Gerizim” is known as the mountain of blessing, and the Samarian Temple was constructed there. After which confronting Jesus by saying; You Jews say that Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. The construing point of her conversation was; men ought to worship God, but where? “Smile,” but Jesus did not engage this conversation on her level of thinking.
But today and at this point it is also needful to say in soul winning, one should be aware of subversive spirits when witnessing, For example: The where and how we should worship, or this popular saying: The church is full of hypocrites and greedy preachers and personally, I’m not going to play with God. They don’t have to remind you or God, for God knows all the hypocrites by personality and name. But salvation is a personal thing and God is calling individually and collectively. It is his wish that whosoever hears his voice and answers his call should be saved, but there’s also spirits of diversion in the air that will try to defeat you and you divert you off mission. Stay Holy Spirit led and on mission and presentation, for which is better for the convert? To hear and refuse to obey, or to hear and later repents and obeys. But how many times as Christians we are not watchful and not prayerful and are caught up and diverted away from the initial issue of why we witness, remember Jesus said; It Is Necessary That I Go through Samaria, Why? Because God saw their need and was willing to reveal himself to them, it was their moment. And God has some moments for others today and he’s going to use somebody to shake the foundations of this world’s prison houses.
2). I Am He (The Christ), the Anointed One
John 4:21-26
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.
22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.
Jesus said at that time in the verbal command, Woman, believe me. God is going to do a brand-new thing of which you know nothing about when it comes to worship. Worshiping in a mountain and at Jerusalem is not what the Father is seeking. Therefore moving her away from what she religiously thought she knew, naked in sin and void in things concerning God’s will; God was not interested in her religious thoughts, for in her rebellion she had already proven that she didn’t know God or understand his ways. But she was in need of him and the message of deliverance she was being given and Jesus stays on track and not subverted to the dogma of where we should worship. Jesus says farther you don’t know what you worship: but we Jews know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. There she stands stripped and quiet, but still wanting that of which she had never heard of, “Living Water.”
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Now Jesus proceeds to answer the question concerning the place of worship and revealing who God is and his will. For God is not seeking to be worshipped in a mountain or in the temple at Jerusalem, but there are two things that are coming which are essential and required, and they are spirit and in truth. God is seeking to move inside of his living creation, for buildings and mountains were inanimate objects, as one writer wrote God does not live in temples made with man’s hands. For God is a living spirit, a consuming fire and the creator of man and now the time had come for man to interact with God in spirit and in truth. Life had come into the world, the living water standing before her and offering her to drink, things of which she never could have imagined. What Jewish man is this with such compassion, and with such revelation and deep knowledge concerning the things of God? Who is this that moves my soul to desire his water, Who is he?
25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
The woman now stands and tells what she truly knows saying; “I know that when the Messiah comes, which is called Christ: he will tell us all things. Of which Jesus replies; “I am he that is speaking with you.”
Conclusion
Come, see a man, is not this the Christ? He told me the truth
John 4:27-30
27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?
28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,
29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.
This is a teaching moment of putting away all prejudices as exemplified by the master. Though the Samarians were not pure Jewish, but a mixture of five cultic races who were placed in the land after the removal of the ten northern tribes of Israel. Who had caused a lot of mischief at the rebuilding of the first Temple, because of the stance the pure returning Jews from Babylon held against them and would not allow them to help rebuild. They were considered as invaders, imposters who held no promises from God according to their covenant given to Abraham. And practiced a cultic religion mixed with their gods and Jewish law, because the land in which they were placed became violent against them, by an infestation of lions. Therefore they were instructed to practice the law of the land of which the previous inhabitants had practiced, of which they mixed with their own cultic God’s. There were negative prejudice histories between them and I can imagine when they asked Jesus who was their neighbor and Jesus gave them the parable of the Good Samaritan, you can imagine how that went over. Yes, over the top of their heads, ears and minds.
Today there are those who feel they have a right to practice prejudices and invoke God’s name in their acts. They have forgotten that we all are the creation of God through Adam and Eve, and we all are suffering from the actions of our paternal parents who allowed Satan and his hatred to enter into our world. Jesus does not fall into this hatred agenda which glorifies flesh, for God is a spirit and no flesh will glory in his presence.
At that moment the disciples were amazed that he talked to this woman but did not interfere, not knowing in just a short time they would be given instructions to move away from their prejudices also. But at this time he would not be considered as just a man, but the resurrected Christ who holds all power in heaven and earth, who commissions them to leave their prejudices behind and carry the gospel into all the nations of the world. Of which John the beloved Jewish disciple wrote in his experience:
1st John 4:7-21 (KJV)
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.
14 And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.
17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 19 We love him, because he first loved us. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. [1] Amen.
