2 The tongue of the wise uses knowledge rightly, But the mouth of fools pours forth foolishness.
Madness (Eccles 10:12-13)

Carelessness (Matt 12:36)
Matthew 12:36 NKJV
36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.
Boasting (Ro 1:30)

14 A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him?
Gossip (Prov 26:22)

Confession of Christ (Ro 10:9-10)
Romans 10:9–10 NKJV
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The Speech of Prayer
Q: Why is it fitting that Paul begins with Prayer?
(4:2) Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;
Prayer Prayer is the strength of the new man
— Source of his power against Satan (Eph 6:18)
— We confess our sin through prayer (Heb 4:15-16)
— Intercede for each other (Ps 66:18)
— Our prayer is directed to God (Matt 6:9)
— In consistent with the Holy Spirit (Eph 6:18)
— Is in the name of Christ (John 14:13)
Persistent in Prayer
4:2) Continue earnestly
— Devote yourselves (NASB)
Devote προσκαρτερέω (proskartereō) Devote, continue earnestly. A compound word of to be steadfast and endure

17 pray without ceasing,
— Be devoted to Prayer (Ro 12:12)
Romans 12:12 NKJV
12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer;
Persistent — Jesus used two parables to illustrate persistent prayer
A widow and a judge (Luke 18:1-8)
— The judge did not fear God, He was an unbeliever, but because the widow insisted he relented and gave her justice
— A friend asking for food for guests (Luke 11:5-10)
— A man goes to his neighbor at midnight and asks for food for his guests
Thanksgiving (4:1) with thanksgiving
— Pray with thanksgiving
— The fifth (5th) Time Paul has mentioned thanksgiving in Colossians
— Thankful for salvation (1:12)
— Thankful for spiritual growth (2:6)
— Thankful for fellowship with Christ and His church (3:15)
— Thankful for the opportunity to serve (3:17)
— Thankful for God will answer prayer (4:2)
We are to be thankful for:
— God’s presence (Ps 75:1)
— God’s provision (Acts 27:35)
— Gods Pardon (Ro 6:17); God’s Salvation
— God’s Promises (1 Cor 15:57; 2 Cor 2:14; 2 Cor 1:20)
— God’s Purpose (Ro 8:28)
Q: What does Paul want the Colossians to pray for (4:3-4)? What is the “mystery” of Christ?
Colossians 4:3–4 NKJV
3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, 4 that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
Mystery — Already discussed in 1:26-27, something hidden in the OT but clear in the NT
— Here, it means the gospel
— Paul prays for an open door to preach the gospel (1 Cor 16:8-9; 2 Cor 2:12)
— We are to pray for God to open doors (Acts 14:27)
Open Doors Jesus Opens Doors (Rev 3:7)

Shut Doors — Several doors had been shut
— Closed the door to Asia for Paul (Acts 16:6-7)
Acts 16:6–7 NKJV
6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. 7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.

Q: How can we act foolish and denigrate our faith? What is the result? (4:5)
(4:5) Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time.
The world sees The world sees how we walk
— If we live like fools, or as if nothing has changed outsides will not be drawn to our faith
— They will shun the gospel, denigrate it if we live as unbelievers (1 Cor 5:12-13)
1 Corinthians 5:12–13 NKJV
12 For what have I to do with judging those also who are outside? Do you not judge those who are inside? 13 But those who are outside God judges. Therefore “put away from yourselves the evil person.”
— We must have a good testimony with those in the world (1 Thess 4:2; 1 Tim3:7); if you live for money you live like a food (1 Tim 6:9)
1 Timothy 3:7 NKJV
7 Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

— More people die every day without Christ (John 9:4)
John 9:4 NKJV
4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work.
(4:6) Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one
— Speak with Grace
— No place for a foul mouth; Christ as our example (Luke 4:22)
Luke 4:22 NKJV
22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

— Says again that we should have edifying speech (Eph 4:29)
Ephesians 4:29 NKJV
29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.
(4:6) seasoned with salt
— NIV, ESV, NASB, NKJV retain the original wording
— NLT misses the beauty of this verse: “Let your conversation be gracious and attractive[a] so that you will have the right response for everyone”
Q: What is the purpose of Salt?
— Prevents corruption and decay
— Our speech should act as a purifying influence
(4:6) know how you ought to answer each one
so that you will have the right response for everyone (NLT)
— Say the right thing at the right time
— Unlike the ungodly: (Ps 12:4) They say, “We will lie to our hearts’ content. Our lips are our own—who can stop us?” (NLT)
— We should echo (Ps 141:3) set a guard over my mouth
Psalm 141:3 NKJV
3 Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.
Everyone Says Hello (4:7-14)
Not good to be alone
— Leaders are more effective with the help of others (Prov 27:17)
Proverbs 27:17 NKJV
17 As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Two are stronger than one; also true of marriage (Eccl 4:9-12)
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12 NKJV
9 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. 11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? 12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

— Speaks so highly of his character that he could replace Titus or Timothy
4 Years later Now Four (4) Years later and he is still with Paul
— Now in Rome during his first imprisonment while writing Colossians
— Paul has an important task: deliver this letter to the church at Colossae

Fellow Prisoner (4:10) my fellow prisoner
—Unlikely that he was an actual prisoner
MacArthur “That he chose to make Paul’s lifestyle his own speaks of his sympathetic, carrying heart. He gave up his own freedom to minister to Paul’s needs.
any leader would be enriched to have a faithful Aristarchus at his side through all his trials. The Lord’s work would not be done if it were not for
people like Aristarchus, who humbly bear hardships without the fame of those they serve”
The Man with a surprising Future (4:10)
(4:10b) with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him)
John Mark A companion of Paul and Barnabas on their 1st missionary journey (Acts 13:5)
— Cousin of Barnabas
— He knew Peter as a youth (1 Pet 5:13)
— Went to Antioch (Acts 12:16) and Cyprus (Acts 13:4-5) and deserted Paul in Perga (Acts 13:13)
Desertion The desertion of John Mark was a source of friction between Paul and Barnabas
— Paul and Barnabas argued about it; Barnabas wanted to take his cousin along on the 2nd missionary journey
— They separated from each other (Acts 15:37-39)
Acts 15:37–39 NKJV
37 Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. 38 But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work. 39 Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus;
Story does not end there
By this time, Colossians, John Mark is a changed man

Colossians 4:12–13 NKJV
12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a bondservant of Christ, greets you, always laboring fervently for you in prayers, that you may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. 13 For I bear him witness that he has a great zeal for you, and those who are in Laodicea, and those in Hierapolis.

— from which our english word agonize is derived
— Used in 1 Cor 9:25 to speak of grueling competition by athletes in the games
— In John 18:36 it is translated fight
— Related words appear in Ro 15:30 to speak of fighting in prayer; Luke 22:44 in reference to Jesus’ agony in the garden

Concluding Remarks (4:15-18)
Colossians 4:15–18 NKJV
15 Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea, and Nymphas and the church that is in his house. 16 Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that you likewise read the epistle from Laodicea. 17 And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.” 18 This salutation by my own hand—Paul. Remember my chains. Grace be with you. Amen.
(4:15) Greet the brethren who are in Laodicea
— Paul closes by greeting the brothers in nearby Laodicea
Nympha Nympha (feminine), your bible may say Nymphas (masculine)
— Small letter next to it is NU (Nestle-Aland Greek NT) most prominent critical text of the NT
Circular (4:16) Now when this epistle is read among you, see that it is read also in the church of the Laodiceans
— They were to read the letter to the Colossians and in turn read the letter to the Laodiceans (probably Ephesians)
Archippus (4:17) And say to Archippus, “Take heed to the ministry which you have received in the Lord, that you may fulfill it.”
— Archippus appears only here and in Philemon 2
— Commanded to complete the ministry that the Lord gave him
And say to Archippus, “Be sure to carry out the ministry the Lord gave you.” (NLT)
— Tell Archippus: “See to it that you complete the ministry you have received in the Lord. (NIV) (45% difference)
My Own Hand (4:18) This salutation by my own hand—Paul. Remember my chains. Grace be with you. Amen.
— Paul writes the final sentence in his own hand
— He frequently used a secretary to write while he dictated known as a “amanuensis”
— But as was his custom he wrote the last sentence himself (cf. 1 Cor 16:21; 2 Thess 3:17; Philem 19)
