“CONSIDER JESUS”

Heb. 3:1-6

Introduction:   Notice the mention of Christ as our high priest in v.17 of chapter 2. It is mentioned again here in v. 1 of the 3rd chapter. However, the discussion of Christ’s priesthood is not developed just here. Instead, another subject is discussed first. Let us examine the passage.

I.      A Description of the Christian

         A.    “Holy Brethren”

1.     Emphasizes sanctification (holy; set apart for service to God; cleansed).

2.     Emphasizes family relationship (looks back to 2:11).

         B.    “Partakers of the Heavenly calling.”

                 1.     It is a heavenly calling because it originated in heaven.

                 2.     It is a heavenly calling because it has heaven as its goal.

II.      A Description of Christ

          A.   “Apostle”

                 1.     Basic meaning - “one sent with a commission.”

                2.     Jesus was sent, commissioned by the Father.

        a.      Jn. 3:34

                        b.     Jn. 4:34

                        c.      Jn. 5:23,36
d.     Jn. 6:29,38,44,57
e.      Jn. 7:16,18,28,33
f.      Jn. 8:16,18,26,29,42
g.     Jn. 9:4
h.     Jn. 10:36

B.    “High Priest” (see 1:3). (developed in greater detail in ch. 7).

III. Christ Contrasted with Moses.

A.    Christ is superior to Moses.

1.     Moses was great, but Christ is greater!

                  2.      Moses was a faithful servant, Christ a faithful son! (v. 5,6)

3.     The glory due to Moses and Christ is like that of a house to a house-builder!

B.    Note v. 4 - the argument is: design demands a designer!
