Passover Seder

    Passover Week              Apr  4th 2007


 

Consider what Jesus did today, 1975 years ago

·        Took part in what is known as Passover Seder

Passover ….to be a continual memorial

·        Exodus 12:11-14 (:)

·        For over 3500 years Jewish families have participated

·        Meal – called Seder, Instructions Haggadah

·        For us, esp tonight – main focus on Christ

o       Jesus took Passover Luke 22:7-8 –

o       Took 1975 years ago tonight

Lets do some very quick calendar reckoning

·        Jim believes – when they are killing lambs, Jesus is taking Passover, early  (lambless?)

 

Everlasting memorial…that becomes Communion

·        Whether know it or not – roots of Lord’s supper or Communion strongly in Passover

·        Tonight, will be our main focus – hoping that your understanding and taking of Passover effected

·        Thus through this tonight – aim at a better understanding and practice of communion

Five main elements to Passover meal – and these five things I hope to leave with you above all else

: Unity, Sanctification, Judgment, salvation and consummation


I.    Unity:

1.   All Israel “governed by God” must keep it (Exo 12:47)

a.   No stranger may eat Passover (Exo 12:43-45)

2.   Passover would take place as a Family

a.   By Father’s house – Exo 12:3, in one house (ex 12:46)

b.   Begin with Mom – lighting candle, prayer

c.   Father would say a blessing

3.   Is to be take as Christians – by Christians

a.   Not for the non Christian

b.   Even a need to recognize entire body – 1 Cor 11

II.Cleansing:

1.   First Cup – vdq qadash– “Sanctification”

2.   Need is for cleansing before Passover

a.   Elaborate ritches of searching for levan

b.   Elaborate ceremonies about cleansing

c.   Have a dipping into salt water – place of tears

3.   Jesus did something different, real – John 13

i)       Picture of what we need…

ii)       Lesson 1- If not clean, feet washing does no good

iii)     Lesson 2 –If clean, don’t need a bath, just feet

iv)     Lesson 3 – If feet are not washed – no part w/Him


III. Remembrance of Affliction:

1.   2ND Cup – of Affliction:  

a.   Central concept – remember where came from

Passover Meal

2.   Questions – Why is this night different from every other night

3.   Moror (Horseradish) - bitter herbs–remember bitterness

4.   Charoset – mud – remember bondage

5.   Second cup – ten drops – judgment on sin

a.   We do not drink of this one – Jesus did

6.   In Christ – we remember His body

a.   We remember that He came – why He came

b.   Remember why had to come–what rescue us from

c.   Even the bread is significant

i)       Unleavened – holy in a unholy world

ii)     Broken, pierce, bruised, bumps

d.   Afikomin (the cut off) – broken, wrapped in napkin


IV. Remembrance of Deliverance

1.   This is the Third Cup – Deliverance Barekh

2.   Focus is on the rescue – deliverance – cost

(Mark 14:23-24)  "Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. {24} And He said to them, "This is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many.

3.Dayono -

Lets take the juice of communion

V.     Expectation:

1.   4th Cup – cup of consummation or expectation

a.   This cup really looks to the future – Looking to

b.   Elijah’s place

c.   Next year in Jerusalem      

2.   Jesus draws us to look for Heaven

a.   In a sense it is what Communion is about

b.   This is what Jesus did for us, brings us to 

: (Mat 26:29)  ""But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom.""
