Necessary because of His Holiness.
The wrath of God is His absolute opposition to sin and evil.
Because God is pure, He cannot be neutral to sin.
He has indignation that is against all that is unholy.
Divine wrath must react against all that doesn’t conform to His holiness.
God’s wrath is always a moral and ethical reaction to sin.
It is spoken in the Old Testament as
“The day of the Lord” or “That Day”
Zephaniah 1:14-15; Joel 2:2, 11; Isaiah 63:4; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-9; 2 Peter 3:10
We think of wrath in the terms of man’s wrath, that isn’t right for the wrath of God is not like the wrath of man. It isn’t done out of passion.
The wrath of God is calculated, patient until the day that it is released in fury.

Abiding Wrath
The wrath of God is hanging over the head of sinners. Ready to be unleashed on the sinner at the point of death.
Those who do not have the righteousness of Jesus Christ as a covering are one small step from the eternal unbearable fury of an angry God.
Romans 1:18
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Those that suppress righteousness in truth. God’s wrath is like waters above a dam. Only being held back by His common grace that we receive in this life. Ready to be released when we cross over into eternity.
Psalm 5:5-6
5 The boastful shall not stand before your eyes; you hate all evildoers.
6 You destroy those who speak lies; the Lord abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
Those who stand by their own merit, who cover their shortcomings with lies. He abhors the blood thirsty.
Psalm 7:11
11 God is a righteous judge, and a God who feels indignation every day.

7 So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
The wrath of the Lord removed all mankind from the face of the earth. Forever reshaping the landscape. Puzzling scientists.
Genesis 19:24
24 Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the Lord out of heaven.
The wrath of God hits with devastating force.

1 Kings 17:1
1 Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”
God stopped all rain and dew for 3 1/2 years.
Consequential Wrath
Consequential Wrath
People do things in a direct disregard against God and they reap the consequences of those actions.
The spread of HIV and many other STD’s that are out there.
Direct disobedience to the commands of God.
7 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.
8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.
Hosea 8
7 For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it.
This is a proverb, a connection that is between sin, and punishment.

The sinner, after repeated rejection is abandoned by God and turned over to the pursuit of their own sins.
Proverbs 1:24-28
24 Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,
25 because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof,
26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you,
27 when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.
28 Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me.
Constantly ignoring God
Romans 1:24-28
24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves,
25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature;
27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

Jesus bore this wrath of God so that we wouldn’t have to bear it.
2 Corinthians 5:21
21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
He became sin, which means he was the one who faced the wrath of God so we don’t have to.
