20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day. 24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Introduction
For decades there has been a question that invariably sparks a great deal of controversy and discussion. Whether you are aware of it or not, your worldview will cause you to answer one way or another. The question is, “Which came first, the chicken or the egg?”
Some insist that it was the egg, while others insist it was the chicken. Although a simple question, the answer reveals something deep and profound about a person. For it reveals whether your worldview is biblical or non-biblical.
Now both views cannot be true. One must be right and the other wrong or, as I prefer to state it for the purposes of this Battle For The Truth series, one must be true and the other a lie. Some might argue that the Bible allows for either answer to be true. However, I beg to differ.
As the biblical narrative reads, there is nothing in it that suggests the egg before the chicken view is true. So, to take the mystery out of the question, I will, as the Bible does, simply state the Truth—the chicken came before the egg. Our text today reveals what God did on the Fifth Day—He created the chicken.
The Water Creatures
Vv. 20-23, “And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. (21) And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. (22) And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. (23) And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.”
Now that the environment and food supply is in place, God creates by the word of His power the animal kingdom. Beginning with the waters, then the air, God speaks salt and freshwater creatures into existence, as well as birds.
There is no ambiguity in the text. It clearly declares that God by fiat created every living creature in the waters and the air. God is so awesome. Can you appreciate not only what He did but how He did it. What an awesome display of supernatural power.
The whales, sharks, dolphins, tuna, octopus, jellyfish, squid, lobsters, shrimp, leviathan, turtles, seals, walruses, penguins, and countless other creatures just began to swarm in the seas, rivers, streams, and ponds. They were all fully formed, mature, and able to reproduce after their own kind to fulfill the purpose for which they were created—man. And God saw that it was good.
The Air Creatures
Concurrently, the air became filled with flying creatures—the eagle, hawk, falcon, hummingbird, dove, sparrow, crow, parrot, turkey and yes, even the chicken, and countless other flying insects. Again, all of this happened on the 5th Day—a 24-hour day not the lie of millions or billions of years. For the text says, “the evening and the morning were the fifth day.”
The Sixth Day - Land Creatures
Vv. 24-25, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. (25) And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.”
Following the pattern of the previous days, God speaks the land creatures into existence on sixth day. The cattle, sheep, goats, lions, tigers, bears, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, monkey, beaver, squirrel, all manner of reptiles, and insects. They were all fully formed, mature, and able to reproduce after their own kind to fulfill the purpose for which they were created—man. And God saw that it was good.
Are you following what is going on here and the implications? Despite the clear evidence to the contrary, those holding the secular and non-biblical worldview position believe but cannot prove that the universe and its life forms over millions and billions of years, without a cause, naturally came into existence.
This is at best, an amazingly giant leap of blind faith. In contrast, the Bible clearly declares that God supernaturally through divine fiat spoke into existence everything that is heretofore documented. Furthermore, might I add, that there is nothing in the biblical record that has been or can be scientifically or empirically disproven.
Conclusion
So, where are we? Well, as mentioned in the previous message, according to the biblical record, what is indubitably clear is that there are trees and grass on the land, fish in the sea, birds in the air, cattle on a thousand hills, ants in the ground, and roosters crowing. What they all have in common is that they are an effect and not a cause.
How did they get here? Why are they here? Even the secularist agree that all these objects and creatures preceded man’s existence. So, why the rejection of the biblical record? Well, the answer to that question is found in Genesis 3, so stay tuned and we will get there soon.
I think I will close right here with this: there are a lot of things that I do not know. However, I there are two things I do know; (1) You did not cause them to come into existence; and (2) Neither did I. O, but I know who did. Who did it? God did it!
Psalm 19:1-3 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.”
I heard the Apostle John write in John 1:1-3, 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2) The same was in the beginning with God. (3) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (14) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
Who is John talking about and what is His name? I am so glad you asked. John is talking about the God-man, whose name is Jesus the Christ of Nazareth.
The same Jesus to whom the Apostle Paul is referring in Colossians 1:16-20, when he said, “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: (17) And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. (18) And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (19) For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; (20) And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” Amen somebody.
