Bibles with you go ahead and open up to Genesis chapter 22. This is the culmination of Abraham's journey and story with God. We've been walking with Abraham for the last several weeks. Now as God has called Abram as he was known when God called him to be God's imager in the world God's plan of reconciliation and Redemption for all people with the take place through this person Abram when God called him it wasn't because he was so good. It wasn't because he was righteous. It wasn't because he was powerful it wasn't because he had anything to offer. He didn't have anything to offer. God. God had everything to offer him. The one thing that Abraham did have that I find amazing in the story was a faith that moved him to obedient. So when God called him in Genesis chapter 12 and said, I want you to get out of your parents basement and move out and start life on your own. I want you to go out into the unknown. I want you to go into the Wilderness. I'm not going to tell you where you're going. Just want you to come with me. The Glorious Miracle of Abraham's life is that he follow he went he believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness. This is why Abraham is known in the Old Testament the Hebrew scriptures in the New Testament as the father of faith, those who are of faith those who live in faithful obedience are The Descendants the children the Sons and Daughters of Abraham because of his faith in Genesis chapter 22 this morning. we have God appear to Abraham. For the 7th and final time. It's it's it's it's so beautiful to me how intricately written and composed The Book of Genesis is its use of numbers as metaphor and symbolism. It's profound. We see it in so many ways. It's no surprise to me as I as I sat back and started thinking through if they got rid of here and here and here and here this is the last time that has a conversation with Abraham. No surprise. It's the seventh time number of completion. This is the culmination and climax the completion of Abraham's story. And it's an important story. Because while Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness while Abram was God's chosen imager that was going to bring reconciliation. Not just for himself and his descendants book for all the peoples of the Earth. AAA Abraham's stumbled and fell many many time Is his faith was?

boat broken in complete His face was not constant and that's important for us. It's one of my favorite things about the scriptures. They haven't been sanitized. They haven't been scrubbed. They don't present us with this this utopian idealistic reality. They show us the Brokenness of this world. It's what makes the scriptures so unbelievably relatable for me. When I look at Abraham and see if men to go out into the unknown and then he gets confronted with a drought and he runs off to Egypt and then when it gets to eat if it gets afraid of my wife, she's my sister and then if we saw last week, he doesn't just do that once he doesn't again. This is a man that believed. and didn't believe a man that was in process space is something that is like a muscle it will strengthen or weaken depending on its usage. There's something about this story this seventh appearance of God to Abraham. That shows us how Abraham's faith has grown and developed over the course of a lifetime.

the course of a lifetime

was getting the text after these thing.

God tested Abraham and said to him Abraham. And he said here I am. After these things these things refers to the last chapter when Ishmael the son of Hagar by Abraham was talking and laughing and ridiculing Isaac the son of Sarah the son of Promise the son of God's covenant and God. Told Abraham to do what Sarah asked him to do, which was to send Ishmael away. The God would provide would take care of him and that's exactly what pair of Ishmael.

We got left Abram Abraham and Sarah with Isaac the son of promise. When that story ended in chapter 21 Isaac is probably 3 to 5 years old in this story. Will we see that? This is now a significant amount of time later. He is old enough and it's quite a range but commentators estimate. He's anywhere between 13 and 30. Okay young man. You can be considered a young man or a boy in that age group. Okay until you're married basically and then and then that changes so we don't know exactly we know from the text as if we're going to see he's old enough and big enough and strong enough to carry a bunch of wood up a Mountainside to ask intelligent questions to participate in what's going on. He is no longer a toddler that's actually important. To the story as we're going to see the text is very very clear hear you you need to see what this says God. What does it say tested Abraham? Tested Abraham everything that's going to come after in. This chapter has been designed and orchestrated by God to be a

some translations and I believe the Old King James actually did this didn't translate a test. They translated it tempt God tempted Abraham bad translation. There's a world of difference between testing and tempting and we have scriptures that clearly articulate James says,

This is not a Temptation. God is not trying to entice him into sin. On the other hand what God is doing is legitimate and is something that we see God do often in the scriptures. God is testing him.

Testing him.

And I'm okay with that. I'm not sure. I want got the test me.

And that's a big part of what we got to do to deal with this text. This morning is is is to recognize that when we're in this relationship with God when we put our faith our Allegiance in Jesus as our King and high priest as our reconciliation and Our Redeemer as we come into this relationship of Faith with God our faith like Abraham's faith will grow must grow. And our faith like Abraham's faith will be tested. God is testing Abraham. Before we keep on with the star week. We should ask a couple questions. Who is the test for? Who is the test for? If if if I'm going to test you. It's something in life. It's going to be because I don't know what's going on. I'm not on the present, but I don't know everything. I see a very small part and I can't see your heart. I can't read your mind. There might be in our relationship. I might put you to the test to see what's going on inside of you. That's how humans test each other. I think because of that because that's the way we understand testing in relationships. It's it's quite common in the interpretation of this text to see what God's testing Abraham to see if he has Faith or not as if God doesn't know how things are going to go. You make a huge mistake. If we start with the assumption that this test by God of Abraham is for God has not forgot. He's got the information that's not going to get the surprise at the end of the chapter. You're not going to go and see that coming right like this is not for you.

Who's it for spray Abraham? God is testing Abraham for Abraham. Abraham needs to know and see how he has grown Abraham needs to know and have this experience with God where once again. Faithfulness is proved true.

Abraham's faith is lived out. lived out

It's a test of his faith. At least thank God tested Abraham and said to him Abraham. He said here I am. And this is where the story gets. Just route. Take your son. Your only son Isaac which is interesting not his only son right but he is his only son. He's the only son of Promise. He's the only son of the Covenant is the only son that God gave him out of God's covenant faithfulness Ishmael was his son, but Ishmael has been sent off. So as far as Abraham is concerned he's got one air. God's covenant promise and God's covenant faithfulness, Lord. God has obligated himself to Abraham. Abraham will have a child a son through his wife Sarah and that that son. What multiplied into Nations and that through he is lying all the peoples of the earth will be blessed. Isaac is in a privileged position. Miss. Says, I want you to take your only son the one whom you love. I want you to go to the land of Moriah and I want you to offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I shall tell you.

I don't know what to do with this God is telling him. Participate in child sacrifice, which is obscene and out of the ordinary actually in the ancient near East it was run of the mill. Most of the people's that Abraham lived around and sojourned with would participate in child sacrifice is hard to wrap my brain or my heart around that reality, but that's the world that he was living in and so God comes to him remember this is a test.

This is a test.

Abraham I have promised and Covenants with myself that through this child all the peoples of the world will be blessed. But here's what I want you to do. I want you to go and offer him as a sacrifice.

So Abram Rose early in the morning.

Saddled his donkey took two of his young men with him. and his son Isaac He cut the wood for the burnt offering and a rose and went to the place of which God had told him. I said I want you to go to this land of Moriah want you to go up onto this Mountainside Mountainside biblically are our places of worship their temples. I want you to go. I want you to take your son. I want you to until he does he wakes up early. He cuts the wood. He gathers the things he puts them on his donkey. He gets his servants to come with them and they go out towards the place is fascinating all we have of Abraham in in these opening versus Oli. All he says is here I am that's all he says, I got this out. I want you. to do the worst thing that you can match I want you to offer up your son on a Mountainside.

He wakes up. He cuts the wood. He loads it on the donkey and they begin their Journey.

Start to wonder what is God up to? What is the nature of this test? What is God trying to demonstrate to Abraham? through

Abraham

in Exodus chapter 20 We've actually similar scene in some ways. We have Moses coming down from the mountain top with the Ten Commandments. Delivering them unto the people. They're gathered on a Mountainside. This is Sinai not Mariah. They're gathered together Moses comes down from meeting with God and delivers unto them the Ten Commandments and when he shows up there freaking out cuz there's lightning and there's Thunder and God's voice terrifies them and Moses comes down and after he gives them the ten words The Ten Commandments Moses said to the people do not fear. Don't be afraid. For God has come to test you that the fear of him maybe before you that you may not sin which on a casual reading seems like double-talk right? Don't be afraid. Testing you to see if you'll be afraid. Mmm, this is where we have a new on a different meaning of fear when he comes when he says don't be afraid he's talking about that that's sense of fear. And Terror don't don't freak out don't be afraid because God has come to test you that the fear of him and out with a different usage of fear. It's a sense of reverence. It's a sense of Allegiance. It's a sense of importance. What what do we consider to be of the most significant in our lives? What's at the top of our value chart? What what gets our Allegiance and our heart? That's what we fear.

In a similar situation says don't fear. God has come to test you.

So that you might fear Him. And that you may not send. This is Fascinate because we keep going in Genesis 22 in this story. We're going to see that this is exactly what God is doing with Abraham. Is testing the reality of his year in the sense of being scared but in the sense of reverence and Allegiance? Who and what will you trust?

This is this is something different for Abraham.

I've got to come to Abraham six times in the past when he's come to him and asked him to do something that ask has always been partnered with a blessing. If you do this, I'll do this. Abraham if you leave your family, I will give you a family if you leave your land. I will give you a land if you step away from your security. I will bless your socks off in the Hebrew. I was talking to bless you so much. But anybody that blesses you I'll bless them and anybody that curses you asked him to do is ask him to do something. He's offered and promised a blessing in return.

Now when a different season with Abraham when God comes to Abraham in this chapter, if he doesn't come and say if you do this, I will bless you. Doesn't say that at all. He just comes to him and says I want you to do this. With no promise of blessing attached to it. And in fact, it's worse than that. There's not even a lack of the blessing promise but the blessings and the promise is threatened in his obedience.

I just think if you're going to deal with this text, honestly. Not religiously. Not the way you think you're supposed to just going to read this text and enter into it. You got it.

You got to wonder about this on a deep deep level. It doesn't make sense God. How could you ask me to do this? Why would you ask me to do this? Some of us may look at this in Android.

Because for many of us Faith isn't faith. I'm in the middle. Now. You ready? For many of us were willing to trust God as long as it makes sense to us. We're willing to obey God as long as there's something in it for us the moment you would. That kind of mentality. You don't actually have faith in God you really have faith in your own understanding and reason. Got off do what you ask me to do if in my unfettered wisdom, I deem it to be acceptable expedient and appropriate. But God if you ask me to do something that I don't like. If you asked me to go somewhere, I don't want to go if you call me to give up something that I don't want to let go of.

Get prepared for my temper tantrum.

Half the counseling I do as a pastor. It's sitting with people and listen to them throw a temper tantrum about.

And I do it all the time myself.

God doesn't. That doesn't be God the way I wanted to be God.

God's not moving the way I want them to move God's not moving me the way I want him to move me.

You got a wrap your minds and your hearts around this this morning. That's not faith. It is Faith. It's not faith in God. It's faith in yourself. And I ain't going to do much for you in the long run.

Abraham is being called to another level of Faith here. And obedience without a blessing and obedience. That doesn't make sense BTS.

It doesn't feel right.

Reminds me of those studying at this week of the story a joke. Remember the story of Joe jokes and Joe lives during this time. Don't actually the oldest book we have in the Hebrew scripture comes from the time of the Patriarchs before the nation of Israel a job's a man in the ancient near East remembers God After the flood after Babel. He's a righteous man. Upright man. He fears the Lord. And jove is a wealthy and prosperous man. He has many children. He's got more cattle than anybody else. He's highly respected. He sits at the city Gates. Everybody loves him. He's got it made in one day.

God messes up everything. That's the story of Joe read it. If you don't believe me one day God meeting with the Divine Council. Which we've seen in Genesis God is meeting with the rulers and and agents of the supernatural world that he's created as his images and and they gather together and and God turns to the adversary the Accuser. and he says that what do you think about Joe? He's a pretty good guy, right? blameless and upright righteous guy and at the accuser says well, that's cuz you're so good to him. Is it because you blessed him so much it's easy to trust you got to be righteous when you got everything that you want. But if you take it away from him, he will curse you. And I was like, all right. Let's see.

What time is super comfortable with to be honest?

And so the adversary comes the accuser comes wipes out with natural disasters.

How does jove respond?

Jody Rosen Torres Road shaved his head not so he could be an usher here at AMC. But because culturally that is a sign of grieving. Let the outward physical demonstration of grieving so everybody would look upon him. They would see his torn garments. It would see his shaved head. So he's grieving. Morning. Which is the right and reasonable response to the kind of grief. He's just experienced but he falls on the ground and worship.

The lord gave me all that stuff in the Lord took it away. I'm not just going to praise him when it's good. I'm not just going to glorify him when it's easy. I'm not just going to believe and trust in him when he gives me what I want when he gives I worship when he takes away iworship.

the text says in all of this job did not sin. What charge God was wrong? Abraham's being tested in the same way Joe was tested. God is asking him to give up that which is of ultimate value in his life.

In order to reveal what actually is Ultimate value in his life.

Is Abraham's faith? in the gift that God has given

or in The Giver of the gift

On the third day of the imagery in this is so profound. So I've been traveling on the third day.

Third day, that means something to us on this side of the Cross. Doesn't it on the third day? Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar got chosen. This is the mountain.

I want you to go there.

And Abraham said to his young man. Remember he brought two young men with him. He said stay here with the Donkey.

You want to hear an expression of Faith listen to what he says to them in the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you. I don't think Abraham has any clue what's going to happen? But he doesn't know the details. How could he got his and told him I told him is I want you to go and sacrifice your only son and so he's gone. But Abraham's faith has been shaped and forged and sharpened in The Crucible what time and time and time again, he is seen the Covenant faithfulness of God. The God does not break or violate his words that God will do what he says. He's going to defend God has given him Isaac Isaac is the gift of Promise. So even though God has asked him to sacrifice Isaac.

He's willing to do it. Why because he's confident that God. Cannot will not lie.

The God is not going to break his own word.

Address to the young man you were here working to go worship and we're coming back. coming back

So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. They took in his hand the fire.

For the word Angel which is going to come up here really important. word for Angels My Messenger work tonight and I'll look at it if there's a plan words here and there's something important is happening in there. Kicking ass and the fire and the knife.

So they went both of them. together but that cheaper phrase means more than they were just walking in the same direction. They were walking in unity. They joined themselves in unity to do what God had asked them to do. We see that Isaac is actually participating in this with Abraham.

Isaac said to his father my father. He said here. I am my son.

He's a whole we got the fire.

Here's the wood. But where is the Lamb? for a burnt offering

which is a reasonable question. Think we missed something on the shopping list dad.

This is going to be so embarrassing. We're going to get up there or going to build a firework. I have it ready.

neighbor Hamsa

God will provide for himself the lamb. for a burnt offering my son

the way we tend to read that in English. Is that Abraham is just addressing his son, but I think it's it's much more nuanced than that in the Hebrew. What he says the Isaac is God will provide himself a lamb for the sacrifice. And it's you. My son will be the sacrifice. Abraham is telling Isaac. What's about the happened you Isaac will be the sacrifice. I want you to think about this for a minute and let's just think there's some Logistics here. Abraham's old is well over a hundred years old at this point in time. He's climbing up the mountain. He's got the fire. He's got the knife Isaac is at least 13, maybe 30. If Isaac wants to get away. from Abraham there's nothing Abraham can do about Are you with me here? You understand? This is important to the start. Abraham's just let him know what God has asked him to do. Yeah, we didn't bring a lamp. Well, actually we did bring a lamb. Its you God provided you you're the sacrifice Isaac. And Isaac would have no problem getting away.

We get this repetition of the sprays so they went both of them together.

They came to the place which God had told him. Abraham built the altar there and lay the wood in order

and the bound Isaac his son. The Jews call this chapter the Akita from the word bound The Binding of Isaac is interesting. Most Christians talk about this story as the sacrifice of Isaac except Isaac didn't get sacrifice. Play the Jewish way of thinking about this is much better. They they call this The Binding of Isaac and it's significant because once again, there's no way Abraham could have bound Isaac without Isaac's willing participation.

I can't imagine a scenario where Isaac couldn't have run away or overpowered is Agent father.

But they they are together. Laying out the wood lighting the fire and Abraham bound Isaac. And laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

Dan Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife.

if you haven't heard me talk about this the last few weeks went when I walk through this. This is not an ordinary Angel. This is free Carnot appearance of theophany in appearance of God This is an appearance of Jesus before the Incarnation.

Abraham stands knife in hand ready to sacrifice the child of promise to son at the last moment the angel of the Lord God himself shows up and says Abraham Abraham

Abraham said here I am.

I said you not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him? For now, I know.

That you fear God. Now, I know that you fear. What does that mean? Does that mean that God didn't have the information beforehand? The God was surprised by what play?

I think with our understanding of God in Genesis let alone the rest of the scriptures. That's an alternative that that's acceptable God is the knower of all things. Nothing is hidden from him.

the usage of the word to know

we've seen it in Genesis already primarily talking about when a man takes a woman and they come together in marriage and sexual intimacy in a marriage is described as knowing. He knew his wife. And she can see the way the the Hebrew idiom for how they describe intimacy. It's a shared experience to know something in the ancient near Eastern understand. He's not just an intellectual fact like oh, yeah. I know it I can write it down. I got that covered. No, it's an experience a shared experience. What what does text what does versus ain't got so now I have experience with Abram and Abram has experienced with me that at the end of the day what he hears what he Treasures what he value. What he trusts in? is God

Now, I know that you fear God seeing that you have not withheld your son your only son. from me

Number it was a test. God never intended for Abraham to kill his son course, he wouldn't. God doesn't. value child sacrifice in a law that clearly Through Moses delineate this is one of the ways that you as the nation is going to be distinct from all the people around you they all sacrificed children. You're never going to sacrifice children.

For Abraham, this was a unique test. by God

See, where is heartwise?

the moment a girl or a boy he passed the test.

Abraham lifted up his lies and looked and behold behind him was a ram caught in a Thicket by his horn. It wasn't that like it's been stuck in the thicket and he just hadn't noticed it at its immediacy.

And write that moments right behind them turns around and sees this Ram come through and it gets caught in the thicket. Abraham went and took the RAM and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place. the Lord will provide

so that's what that's where Abraham's heart was the heart of Abraham's Faith. Was it no matter what God asked him to do. He knew that God would provide.

Is it a sin to this day? on the Mount of the Lord

it shall be provided.

on the Mount of the Lord It shall be provided.

I thought important Church.

Cuz there was another son.

Walked up that same amount.

Where's where's Mariah? What what mountain? was Abraham and Isaac on What where is Mariah and where do we see it show up again? We'll keep reading the story. We see that Solomon builds his Temple. Was he build his temple on a mountain? What mountain does he build it on Mount Moriah?

There's another son. It's stood in the mount in the temple. ridiculed and rejected by man Condemned to be crucified on the same Mountain. That Abraham offered Isaac and Isaac was spared another son was provided but this time he was not spare.

He offered his life as a ransom if you're if you're paying any attention at all. The prophetic shadows in the story of what is the comp? It's on the same Mountain. It's on the third day. They carry the wood on their backs.

Be a sacrifice.

The angel of the Lord called Abram a second time from the heavens and said by myself. I have sworn declares the Lord because you have done this and if not, withheld your son your only son. I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply your Offspring as the stars of heaven. And as with sand that is on the seashore and your Offspring shall possess the Gate of his enemies listen to what's being promised now. His once again, Recommitting himself to the promise that he's already given Abraham, but he's adding to it. Because you touch me because you want to talk. There's going to be a seed that's going to come from you. Problem multiply that seats for that. There's going to be a seed and he shall possess the Gate of his enemies and in your Offspring show all the nations of the earth be blessed because you have obeyed my boy.

This is why the New Testament starts Matthew 1:1. This is a record of the genealogy of Jesus the king son of Abraham Seed of Abraham.

is ultimately fulfilled in the faith of Jesus.

Who entrusted himself to the father?

The father asked Abraham to offer his son. The father asked Jesus to offer.

Not an easy ass. And don't deceive yourself into thinking this was easy or simple for Jesus. Look for The Garden of Gethsemane for that. Sweating blood if there's another way take this cup away if there's any other way.

interesting that in the New Testament so many of the gospel writers in the apostles as they write they reference back. to these story but this story which is so ripe with prophetic allusion and symbolism is very rarely brought up and mentioned.

There's one place though, I think. the Paul had it in mind and it's maybe one of the greatest pieces of literature ever written Romans 8. He says what what shall we say to these things? What should we say to the reality that we are broken people living in a broken world? What should we say to the reality that the world hates? What should we say to the reality that not only do people hurt us, but we hurt people not only two people fail us but we fail what what do we say the reality of living in this broken world now that Jesus has come died. And risen again this what shall we say to these things. If God is for us who can be against us. That's what we say. No matter what's going on. No matter who is against us no matter what obstacles or problems we have if God is for us who can stand against

he who did not spare his own son. But gave him up for us all. How will he not also with him graciously give us all things.

I read this and I think Paul probably reflecting and and and and meditating and resonating with the offering of The Binding of Isaac.

And the reality that God did not spare his own son. If God didn't logic in this is so beautiful.

If God in his posture and stance with us. Didn't hold back his son.

Why would you think for an instant he would hold back anything else?

What you should bring any charge against God's elect. God justifies Who's the condemned? Christ Jesus is the one who died more than that who was raised? Who is now at the right hand of God who indeed is interceding? brass Have to talk about that before that's that's one of most reassuring and encouraging lines in all of the scriptures Jesus the one who entrust who who was faithful. Jesus the one who died and rose again Jesus the king who has been ascended and raised about above every Power and principality Jesus sits on the throne in what's he doing? I know some of us we we take John out of contact. We think Jesus picked up a hammer and started building the Heavenly City. Sitting on the throne ruling interceding for me and for you.

I don't know about you, but I need it.

I don't need it a little I need a lot. I don't need it some I need all the time.

Jesus intercedes for us

So who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Is there a tribulation distress persecution famat? Nakedness dangers sort Ovid.

As it is written for your sake. We are being killed all day long. We are is regarded as sheep. to be Slaughter But in all these things we are more than conquerors.
