We are continuing in the Life of Jesus
This is still taking place like last week during the time of Tabernacles
A holiday when if able Jews from all over were meeting in Jerusalem
And Jesus is running into trouble, with “the Jews” who are the ruling counsel of the Jewish People.
Jesus Knows it is nearing the time for his death. But it is not yet.
As we read today’s passage out of John 8 some of your Bibles may have this section in parenthesis Because this section may not have been in Johns original Gospel
The oldest versions of the Gospel we have do not have this section in it. But There is nothing wrong with this bit of Scripture. It is best to look at it like though this may not have been part of the original version it was added later by someone who remembered the event from Jesus life
Saying that don’t use this passage if you are in a debate. It is to easily discredited
But it is a great passage of Jesus anyway and we are going to use it here
John 8:1–11 CSB
1 But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2 At dawn he went to the temple again, and all the people were coming to him. He sat down and began to teach them. 3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery, making her stand in the center. 4 “Teacher,” they said to him, “this woman was caught in the act of committing adultery. 5 In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?” 6 They asked this to trap him, in order that they might have evidence to accuse him. Jesus stooped down and started writing on the ground with his finger. 7 When they persisted in questioning him, he stood up and said to them, “The one without sin among you should be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Then he stooped down again and continued writing on the ground. 9 When they heard this, they left one by one, starting with the older men. Only he was left, with the woman in the center. 10 When Jesus stood up, he said to her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 “No one, Lord,” she answered. “Neither do I condemn you,” said Jesus. “Go, and from now on do not sin anymore.”]
Pray
Jesus Goes back to the temple and starts teaching. This is classic Jesus. He goes to where the people are. Where the people can find him and he teaches. Who is all there doesn’t really matter but that people were coming and learning as Jesus taught
The Jews or the “scribes and the Pharisees” bring a woman into the temple caught in adultery. Adultery is a serious charge in the Bible
Exodus 20:14 LEB
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
This is part of the Ten Commandments
Which is the Absolutes that all the other laws are built upon in the Bible
This is the Jewish constitution in American law. Adultery is a serious problem because God is the author of Marriage
Mark 10:9 LEB
9 Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate.”
What God has brought together let no man tear asunder.
And more importantly it destroys the family
Which is the most important unit in the scriptures
There is no group more important than family. God- Spouse - Family - church, before friends, before work, before ….Family is important and adultery destroys that

Who is this woman?

We don’t know. Some traditions say that it is Mary Magdalen. You know the woman that was a Prostitute, but that’s not in the Bible. The woman who married Jesus, not in the Bible. The Woman here, not in the Bible
Truthfully we don’t know
It isn’t important otherwise it would have said
One of the things that bother people is that there is no man brought in too
It takes two to commit adultery in a legal court does it not. You can’t stone someone for thoughts. Even back then. The lack of a man suggest one of two things
1. It’s a trap
A trap was laid out for the woman to catch her in the act. Vice sting operation to get rid of a prostitute. Or a man was in trouble with his wife and wanted to get her of his case. It’s all the woman’s fault she seduced me. So what it was my hotel room. It might have been a trap
2. Or she might have had a child out of wedlock and they wanted to take the child to a more “stable” home and were trying to get rid of the mother
Either way something is not right in the state of Hallmark
Jesus knows something is up. And he writes on the ground. What we don’t know. It is generally assumed he writes peoples sin. But don’t really know
John 8:7 LEB
7 And when they persisted in asking him, straightening up he said to them, “The one of you without sin, let him throw the first stone at her!”
He who is without sin cast the first stone
Noble idea
This passage has been used out of context a lot
No capital punishment. We are all guilty. No telling me I’m wrong, We all have sin. No confrontation about sin. No church discipline
Lots of things this passage is used for
Because the people do leave her alone
But Jesus doesn’t Stone her
John 8:11 LEB
11 And she said, “No one, Lord.” So Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you. Go, and sin no more.”
Instead he saves her
Quite literally. And he tells her to repent
Go and sin no more
We have to remember that repentance is an important part of Grace. We must Go and sin no more. Jesus points out the sin
Jesus always points out the sin And in our lives we have no excuse to say well we are all guilty
Jesus has said I offer you grace
Through my Blood
If you ABC
But Grace is only part of it He has freed us from Sin
Romans 6 we are free from the slavery of Sin
Go and sin no more
We call that repentance
To make a 180
To turn around and move away from sin
To put it to death
For this woman it was go and don’t have sex outside of your marriage bed
