Joshua 7:19–22 NASB95
19 Then Joshua said to Achan, “My son, I implore you, give glory to the Lord, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me.” 20 So Achan answered Joshua and said, “Truly, I have sinned against the Lord, the God of Israel, and this is what I did: 21 when I saw among the spoil a beautiful mantle from Shinar and two hundred shekels of silver and a bar of gold fifty shekels in weight, then I coveted them and took them; and behold, they are concealed in the earth inside my tent with the silver underneath it.” 22 So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and behold, it was concealed in his tent with the silver underneath it.
As we look at the
7th chapter of Joshua it begin the way that my that my elementary English teachers tell me a sentence should never began with a BUT.
Now we know that you use a but to connect two thought together.
Chapter 6 ends with a great conquest the wall of Jericho coming down with a great shoot.
And after 400 years of slavery and 40 year in the wilderness the children of Isreal where finally enter into their promise.
And this story is very familiar to some us finally I am starting to see God word come to pass. Finally God has free me, Finally I am happy, Finally I am not sick, finally the wall that have been in front of me stopping me from filling my Purpose has come down.
And in the mist of great victor in the mist of great joy in the middle of some of Israel very best day.
They have seen God work a cloud by day a pillar of fire by night.
Crossing the red sea and crossing the Jordan
They drank from a rock that was not just any rock
1 Corinthians 10:4 NASB95
4 and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.
it was a spiritual rock that followed and this rock was Jesus.
And after performing one of the greatest ones bring Jericho wall down. The people where on top of the world. And verse 27 of chapter 6
Joshua 6:27 NASB95
27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame was in all the land.
Things where looking Good for Joshua.
BUT The sons of Israel acted unfaithful
Unfaithful to what?????
The Covenant. The ban.
Does anyone know what the ban was???
Joshua 6:18 NASB95
18 “But as for you, only keep yourselves from the things under the ban, so that you do not covet them and take some of the things under the ban, and make the camp of Israel accursed and bring trouble on it.
Now what is the will be the result of braking this ban?
It will bring accuse and trouble.
What a time for trouble to come in every thing was going great.
But a man named Achan decided to take some things under this ban.
Achan or Achar spelled this way in 1 Chronicles 2:7 named meant guess what?
Trouble…..
Now because the sin of one man the whole nation was consider guilty.
Let look at
1 Corinthians 5:6–8 NASB95
6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let us celebrate the feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
1 Corinthians 5:13 NASB95
13 But those who are outside, God judges. Remove the wicked man from among yourselves.
We have to watch for the people that come in our live. We need to be careful of the people that we associate with. We need to beware and discerning that we don’t allow trouble to come into your lives.
Paul tell Timothy in
1 Timothy 5:22 NASB95
22 Do not lay hands upon anyone too hastily and thereby share responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin.
No when I was in high school, I have to say that I was a stud. Everyone knew me (prom king.) I didn’t have a car but this one guy name Cory did.
And one day I ask him hey man can I use your car while you are in baseball practice. Because we where friends he said yes so I was driving it. Now let me add that I loved Jesus my nick name in was preacher. I started preaching at 15 years old.
Now I drove this guys call all around. Then I got it back to him. The very next morning there where lots of POPO at the school and as I was walking down the hall that guys and some other where being taking out in hand cuts. They had found drugs in that car that I was riding.
Who knows that guy was trouble and if a day earlier I would have been found in that car with those things that would have been me in the hand cuts. Because I would have join myself with trouble.
So God was angry.
And when Joshua went up from Jericho where God had shown them such favor and was so good to them and went to AI which meant ruins by Beth-aven which meant  house of wickedness.
Joshua had a plan to divide the central mountains in the middle and prevent any united defense. (he did this because he knew that the inhabitants could not use  chariots. )
And because of the great victor that God had given him in Jericho he sent some to spy the land. And the spys came back saying only send up 3,000 let us not all labor Because the whole population of AI was only about 12,000 Joshua (8:25)
Check out what the great theologian Matthew Henry says
“It did not bode well at all that God’s Israel began to think much of their labour, and contrived how to spare their pains. It is required that we work out our salvation, though it is God that works in us. It has likewise often proved of bad consequence to make too light of an enemy. They are but few (say the spies), but, as few as they were, they were too many for them. It will awaken our care and diligence in our Christian warfare to consider that we wrestle with principalities and powers.” Matthew Henry
Found in our parallel
Ephesians 6:12 NASB95
12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
They took for granted the enemy that they were facing and for us to bring down the principality, power and darkness we all have to labor.
I can’t do it by myself. We all need to labor.
The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few
Luke 10:2 NASB95
2 And He was saying to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
So they went into Ai and 36 men where killed and Israel fled and their heart melted and became as water.
Joshua 7:7–9 NASB95
7 Joshua said, “Alas, O Lord God, why did You ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan! 8 “O Lord, what can I say since Israel has turned their back before their enemies? 9 “For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and they will surround us and cut off our name from the earth. And what will You do for Your great name?”
And what will You do for Your great name?”
Look at verse 10 So the lord said.
Joshua 7:10 NASB95
10 So the Lord said to Joshua, “Rise up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face?
This let us know what because of Joshua pray God answer. Joshua was not selfish say what about all the fame that I have or my name but what will they say about your name.
For a son build his father’s name a one is always concerned about the father man.
And
God answer and tell him to Rise Up.
Joshua 7:11 NASB95
11 “Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. And they have even taken some of the things under the ban and have both stolen and deceived. Moreover, they have also put them among their own things.
There is sin in the camp and because of this you cannot stand before your enemies.
And God told them that he would not be with them any more unless they get the sin out of the camp.
Then God told him Consecrate the people.
The church need to move into sanctification.
So that we can have victory over the principality and power of darkness. We must be holy.
Could it be the reason why true revival is not breaking out is because there is sin in the camp.
Why the sign and wonder or so few.
Why devil are not being cast out.
Look at some one and say get the sin out of the camp.
We must remove the sin out of our lives and get rid of those who and purposely continuing in sin so that we will not bear the burden of their sin.
So Joshua gathered all the tribes together and examined them. The same way we should examine ourselves and the ones we call friends.
And he call them together and he goes by tribe by tribe and he uses is discernment and when he come to Achan he say give glory and praises to your God and tell me what you have gone.
And he did and he told Joshua all that he had done.
See
it glorifies God when we humble ourselves and confess you sin.
Joshua sent messenger to go to his tent and get all the things that he had taken.
Verse 24
Joshua 7:24 NASB95
24 Then Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the mantle, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor.
Joshua 7:25–26 NASB95
25 Joshua said, “Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” And all Israel stoned them with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. 26 They raised over him a great heap of stones that stands to this day, and the Lord turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the valley of Achor to this day.
Achor means????
Trouble!!!!!!
In the beginning trouble came in. and in the end there goes trouble.
We must remove sin from us or it will cause us much trouble.
2 Corinthians 6:16–18 NASB95
16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 17 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord. And do not touch what is unclean; And I will welcome you. 18 “And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.
