Hebrews 7:25 NIV84
Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
This verse has been said to be the crowning jewel of the Book of Hebrews. Jesus is uniquely prepared to be the go-between for us with the Father. He is divine and therefore can interpret God to us. He became human so He can represent us to God.
When I look at that verse, the word SAVE stands out. He is able to SAVE. Save means made whole, heal, and rescued from destruction. That is exactly what Jesus does for us!
Notice that is is used in the present tense. This shows that we are continually being saved. Add to that the word COMPLETELY, or as the the KJV says, UTTERMOST, and we realize that this saving is ONCE AND FOR ALL.
The act of the cross was a once and for all act.
1 Corinthians 1:18 NIV84
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
We recognize that through the power of God, we are saved completely through Jesus. In the context of this passage, the finished act of Jesus is being compared to the work of the High Priest in providing for us the full, complete atonement of our sins. The priestly office was a temporarily, yearly fix. But with Jesus, it is not temporary but permanent. It was more effective that Aaron or any of his descendants that served as priests.
The phrase, “those who come to God” shows that there is responsibility on our part.
James 4:8 NIV84
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
There is a strong connection between the ability of Jesus to save mankind’s willingness to come. There is no other way this can happen except through Jesus.
John 10:9 NIV84
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
So, what does it mean to have the writer of Hebrews say, “He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him?”
That would be fantastic if that was all that was done right? But God in His magnificent wisdom, gives us an opportunity to have His one and only Son Jesus, alive to always intercede for us.
Did you see that? “Because He always lives to intercede for us.”
What does intercede mean?
It means to appeal on one’s behalf. Christ is appealing to God on our behalf.
There is much evidence in scripture of the intercession of Christ.
Romans 8:27 NIV84
And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.
Romans 8:34 NIV84
Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
It is the example for us as well.
1 Timothy 2:1 NIV84
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—
We see implied in this text from Hebrews 7:25 that Christ prays for us moment by moment.
His personal ministry now is to pray for us. He supports and sustains us through His intercessory prayer.
He connects us to His Father because He has experienced our trials and temptations.
Hebrews 4:15 NIV84
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin.
He knows our needs well enough to meet them.
Philippians 4:19 NIV84
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
He is able to meet our needs because of the power and understanding God has given Him.
Psalm 147:5 NIV84
Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit.
So what does this mean to us?
The work of Jesus saves us once and for all. We do not need to have another sacrifice for the atonement of our sins.
Jesus is always going to His Father on our behalf to allow us to be accessible to Him even when our actions have caused us to fall short of His glory.
We are connected.
We are close.
We are cleaned.
