What’s in a name?
What’s in a name?
Have you ever looked up what your name means? Names have meaning and in the days of the bible names given were names lived up to. Today we are looking at some of the names of God.
Here are a few that I looked up
Thomas = twin, leader
James = supplanter, replacer
Nicholas = victory of the people
Earl (aka chuck) = warrior, nobleman
In the bible there are all sorts of names, think about these, would you name your child these?
Abaddon = ruin, destruction; Beelzebub = lord of the flies; Ichabod = no glory; Mara = bitter.
Or then there are these: Abraham = father of many; Daniel = God is my judge; Ebenezer = stone of help; Sarah = lady, princess, noblewoman.
Names: God has many names and each one mean’s something and this morning for us to better understand our Mighty God we are going to look at some of His names. Our focus will be on many of the Old Testament names and end with the name of Jesus, so grab your outline and let’s journey together looking at the names of God, a partial list at least.
Adonai
Adonai
Adonai, the Lord, My great Lord! (Ps8:1-9)

It is the name of the plural God (Ps8:1-9)
The name of the plural God, in Hebrew used in place of YHWH considered too holy to pronounce
Identifies God as our master and is majestic (vv.1, 9)
He is the master and owner of all
Displayed in His creation (vv.5-8)
Listen to the Psalm, listen to what He says about His creation, listen to what He says about man, His greatest creation.
1 O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth, Who have set Your glory above the heavens! 2 Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants You have ordained strength, Because of Your enemies, That You may silence the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?
Do we stop and consider the heavens? the work of God’s finger in creation, in the new beginnings of each day. (Expand on v.3)
Question: look at (Ps8:3) what does the psalmist call for man to do?
We are to consider the heavens, work of Your fingers, the moon, stars.
Now expand on (v.4) that He considers, cares for man!
5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God, And You crown him with glory and majesty! 6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet,
He continues with God’s thoughts on man (vv.5-6)
He reminds that they were given dominion over all things on the earth as given back in (Gen1:26)
7 All sheep and oxen— Even the beasts of the field, 8 The birds of the air, And the fish of the sea That pass through the paths of the seas.
9 O Lord, our Lord, How excellent is Your name in all the earth!
Elohim
Elohim
From Master, owner of all to the all powerful One, who is the Creator of all.

He is the God of God’s, Lord of Lords (Deu10:17)
The omnipotent God who has all power, all authority, able to do all things
Creator of all things (Gen1:1-3)
17 “For the Lord your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God who does not show partiality nor take a bribe.
Question: Look at Deu10:17, what words are used to describe the Lord God here?
God of gods, Lord of lords, great, mighty, awesome, and does not show partiality
expand on the God of all creation does not show partiality
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.
Creation created by the Word of God.
Creation of a new creature comes from the Word of God too
This is the plural God, you see two parts of the Godhead noted and if you were to look at Col1:16 you would see Jesus there too. The plural God! In fact let me give you the other passage
16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him.
You His greatest creation, created in His image, that He thinks of and cares for, you were created in Him, by Him and for Him!

From the Great God to the powerful One who created all things now to the God who sees.

The God who sees as acknowledged by (Gen16:11-14)
Expand briefly who was Hagar was, given, pregnant, mistreated, ran, now comes to the passage of the God who sees
11 The angel of the Lord said to her further, “Behold, you are with child, And you will bear a son; And you shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has given heed to your affliction. 12 “He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.”
13 Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?” 14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
The God who sees the heart of man (Lk5:21-24)
21 The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” 22 But Jesus, aware of their reasonings, answered and said to them, “Why are you reasoning in your hearts?
Question: Look at (Lk5:21-22) What does Jesus say the scribes and the Pharisees are doing?
They were reasoning in their hearts.
I cannot stop the passage there, I must keep in context and give you the rest of it.
23 “Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins have been forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 “But, so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins,”—He said to the paralytic—“I say to you, get up, and pick up your stretcher and go home.”
He knows the intentions of your heart (Heb4:12)
12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Question: According to (Heb4:12) what does the God who sees, see and judge?
He sees, judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
(Transition) God knows and sees all things. He knows our thoughts and knows our feelings even before we do. More than Santa Clause who sees you when you are sleeping and knows when you are awake, the God who sees, sees all, knows all is is the God almighty and that leads to our next name.
El-Shaddai

God almighty, the great and powerful one who sees all, knows our hearts and loves us.

The God almighty as stated by God to Abram (Gen17:1-5)
1 Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; Walk before Me, and be blameless. 2 “I will establish My covenant between Me and you, And I will multiply you exceedingly.”
Question: what does God almighty call man to do and to be in (Gen17:1)?
To walk before Him, and to be blameless
But there is more I have to put in here about our God almighty, who can do all things, read on in this passage.
3 Abram fell on his face, and God talked with him, saying, 4 “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, And you will be the father of a multitude of nations.
5 “No longer shall your name be called Abram, But your name shall be Abraham; For I will make you the father of a multitude of nations.
(Expand) God almighty wants to change you!

From condemned (Jn3:18-19) to no condemnation (Rom5:1)
From slave to sin (Jn8:34) to free from bondage of sin (Rom6:18)
From sinner (Isa59:2) to a saint in the kingdom of the beloved Son (Col1:13)
From powerless to given Holy Spirit power (1Tim1:7)
Power to walk in newness of life (Rom6:4)
By being born of water and Spirit (Jn3:5)
So you can be a new creature (2Cor5:17)
So you may be transformed (Rom12:2)
And be conformed (Rom8:29)
(Transition) - now that is a mighty God, sufficient God who can do all things. Just think This is the God who wants you to cast your cares on Him (1Pt5:7) to bring your worries, burdens to Him (Mt11:28-30). You will be given an opportunity to respond in a little bit, there is still more to the names of God for us to cover.

As we continue to deepen our understanding by looking at the names of God we get to one that now means God with us. Think about that, let that sink in. GOD WITH US.

God’s scheme of redemption planned out included the word becoming flesh, and the flesh dwelling among us, dying for so that we may have salvation through Him.
God with us foretold (Isa7:14; Mt1:23)
14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.
and the N.T. version says this
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”
We have the name, we have the definition of the name. Now to the display of the defined name.
God in the flesh (Jn1:1-3, 14; Heb1:3)
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God.
Question: What was in the beginning according to Jn1:1?
The Word was , God was, God was the Word.
3 All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
Question: how were things created, or come into being according to Jn1:3?
Through Him, and nothing came into being except through Him.
And Word defined
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

I love this description of God with us
3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
But that is not in context and such a beautiful portion of scripture let me put it in context
1 God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, 2 in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
3 And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.

Jehovah

Are you grasping the significance of bible names for God? Each has vital tings for us to understand so to come to know, have reverence for, and to worship the Mighty God we serve which is what this series is about.

Moses out minding his business, tending his flock has an encounter with Jehovah, the “I AM”
Jehovah the “I AM” (Exo3:14, 34:5-7)
14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ”
Moses old that Jehovah the “I AM” is a name worth repeating. May we learn fro that too, that we too need to repeat the name of Jesus which is the way to the Father.
NOw look at another encouter with the “I AM”
5 The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the Lord. 6 Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;
6 Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;
7 who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
Question: Look at (Exo34:4-7) look at the describers used, can you see them?
The I AM is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness, forgives sin!
And it is implied (v.7) He is just.
YHWH the formal name of “I AM” (Exo3:14; Mal3:6)
We have look at Exo3:14 already, but let me give you the Malachi one
6 “For I, the Lord, do not change; therefore you, O sons of Jacob, are not consumed.
YHWH, I AM does not change, so we can count on Him, we can trust Him. He will be faithful, even when we waiver in faith.
(Transition) And in trying to me nice and not keep you here all day, let me briefly bring up a few more names, scriptures and describers. I ask you to look up the passages for by doing so you will draw closer to our Mighty God, and that is why we are here, right?
Other names
Other names
Within then name Jehovah, there are other describers used. So, here are some for you to consider, look up scripture, gain some understanding about.
Jehovah - Rapha (Lord who heals)
Exo15:25-27; 1Pt2:24
The greatest healing is man to God through Jesus when our sins are forgiven
Jehovah - Rohi (Lord is my Shepherd)
Ps23:1-3; Jn10:14-18; Heb13:20
He becomes our Shepherd our great Shepherd whose voice we can hear
Jehovah - Tsidkenu (The Lord our Righteousness)
Jer23:5-6, 33:16; 2Cor5:21)
He who knew no sin, became sin so we could become the righteousness of God. He imputed His righteousness on us.
Jehovah Jireh - Lord will provide
Gen22:14
The Lord will provide our needs, similar to what Paul wrote in Php4:19.
Jehovah - Nissi (The Lord is my banner)
Exo17:15
Not only does he become our banner, we become a banner of Christ by letting Gods peace shine in us and through us.
Jehovah - Shalom (The Lord is peace)
Judg6:24
Having peace with God (Rom5:1) we can make peace and have peace with one another and have internal peace even in the difficult times.
