60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
This is Hard
How can man do what Jesus has just said he is unable to do?
If man must believe but he does not want to believe what can be done!
Ex: An addict who is withering away. You set a plate of food in front of him but he won’t eat. Why? He wants the drugs he craves.
He is enslaved by a desire that is killing him.
It enslaves by corrupting us at the nature level and by so doing control us
Rom 6:6-10
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
How?
Three Life giving realties
The gospel of Jesus Christ is hard for humanity to receive
We must come but we can’t come - We must believe but humanity has a vested interest to believe in himself, to save himself not to surrender control to anyone.
John 6:53
53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.
Jesus Christ knows the hearts and motives of all who profess to believe.
V.60—61 - Why are you offended?
