This week we are continuing in on the life of Jesus and we are talking about one of my personal favorite moments in Jesus life
A moment when I would love to see. I wish someone would have taken a picture.
Today we are talking about the transfiguration
What a sight!
Let’s turn and read that passage Matthew 17:1-13
Matthew 17:1–13 CSB
1 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 He was transfigured in front of them, and his face shone like the sun; his clothes became as white as the light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it’s good for us to be here. If you want, I will set up three shelters here: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased. Listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown and were terrified. 7 Jesus came up, touched them, and said, “Get up; don’t be afraid.” 8 When they looked up they saw no one except Jesus alone. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don’t tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.” 10 So the disciples asked him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 11 “Elijah is coming and will restore everything,” he replied. 12 “But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn’t recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he had spoken to them about John the Baptist.
Can you imagine yourself there
Up on a mountain with Jesus. Just the four of you. These are the three closest disciples of Jesus. What an honor. These were Jesus friends
Get up on that mountain. I love mountains in the first place. Being able to look around and see all God’s wondrous creation. To Feel the air, to see the clouds. What Glory and beauty you see. Amazing God we serve
Get up on that mountain only to be shown something even more amazing. Jesus shining in all his Glory, Transfigured, Changed into His pure body. Seeing a glimpse of what our new bodies will look like?
Two more men are with Jesus
I love this part. Who is there?
Moses! The proto-prophet. The first. Who saw the people into the land but did not get to cross into it himself
Deuteronomy 34:4 CSB
4 The Lord then said to him, “This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”
Why because of sin.
Deuteronomy 32:51–52 CSB
51 For both of you broke faith with me among the Israelites at the Waters of Meribath-kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin by failing to treat me as holy in their presence. 52 Although from a distance you will view the land that I am giving the Israelites, you will not go there.”
He struck the rock instead of speaking to it. Which seems small but in reality it was Moses losing his cool and claiming God’s glory for himself. Trying to take the role of saviour upon himself. He is misrepresenting Christ.
Doesn’t mean he is hated by God. but like the rest of his generation which he was leading, he must stay out.
Yet hear we are in Matthew 17 in the heart of the promise land and hear stands Moses. Why because of the ultimate redemption of Jesus Christ
But it isn’t just Moses its Elijah two Who is the most famous of prophets in the OT other than Moses. He is the prophetic forerunner of Jesus Christ
Malachi 4:4–5 CSB
4 “Remember the instruction of Moses my servant, the statutes and ordinances I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel. 5 Look, I am going to send you the prophet Elijah before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes.
Elijah is a man that prayed for the redemption of Israel. And here he stands with the Messiah who is the ultimate redemption of All
What a glorious thing it would be to have been there
Standing with Jesus in his glory with the greats that came before, Moses and Elijah who represent the Law and the Prophets. That which Jesus came to fulfill. Jesus didn’t come to destroy the Law but to fulfill it. And here Jesus is the man who has told them that He is on his way to the cross to die but to be raised on the third day.
To redeem us all.
What a gift we have in Jesus
The Gift of redemption
Redemption is the idea that we can be made right before the holy and just God
And He comes to offer it to all of us. Not that we can keep doing whatever we want but so that we can be free. Free of the chains that bind us to sin and damnation. Free to live life to its fullest. That is a life in the boundaries he has set to keep us Safe
Even though it seems sometimes and if you follow him you will agree
The biggest risk are done following him. Because we are not focusing of safe through our eyes but his
This gift of redemption is meant to be shared Jesus said tell know one until after I have raised
But that time has come and Gone
This vision is meant to be shared

Next Steps
