Beatitudes 2

Introduction:

The Beatitudes, or the sermon on the mount; this past Sunday evening we started on them first with “Poor in Spirit” saying that doesn’t mean poorly spirited, or poor nor even a lack in the HOLY SPIRIT but to be a person realizing that you are unable to live, breathe, or exist without God. To “Mourn” isn’t to simply act sad all the time, but to have a repentive heart. The “Meek” are the tender, humble teachable, controlled, not proud nor arrogant.

Matthew 5:6-7KJV

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

1.    Verse 6 Blessed

  1. This means more than we think! Not just blessed as we use the word blessed but the greek word used here was a word only meant for the greek gods or for those who had passed on.
  2. Blessed and fortunate and happy and  spiritually prosperous

2.     Verse 6 hunger and thirst for righteousness

a. As the hart panteth for the water the hart is an animal living in the mountains during the winter . .

Psalm 42:1-2KJV

1 As the hart panteth after the water brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O God. 2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?

b. We must desire him as one desires a meal when starving or water when dying of thirst.

John 7:37-39KJV

37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)

  1. For they shall be filled!

John 4:14KJV

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

3.    Verse 7 Merciful

a.       Merciful is to have a forgiving spirit and a compassionate heart. To show benevolence to the needy. Forgiving those who are wrong, but much more! To have a tender heart, to forgive even when they don’t deserve it or want it!

Psalm 18:25KJV

25 With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright;

b.      To bear the burdens of others!

Galatians 6:2KJV

2 Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

c. If we want mercy we must give mercy!

Matthew 6:14-15KJV

14 For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: 15 But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
