I. Definition of Thriftiness

  A. Wise use of my resources so I have more to give back

    1. Thriftiness is tied to stewardship. Stewardship is the wise management of what I have been given

  B. Bill Gothard – Thriftiness is multiplying my resources so I have more to give back to God.

    1. Everything I have comes from God; I am giving back what he has given me

II. Importance of Thriftiness

  A. 2 Cor. 5:10 -

    1. We will give an account of what we have dome with it

  B. Matt. 25:21 –

    1. James Moffatt – a man’s treatment of money is the most decisive test of his character – how he makes it and how he spends it.

      a. 1 Tim. 6:10 -

        1. Think about the evil money brings into the world.

III. Thriftiness V. Stinginess

  A. Bill Gothard – thriftiness is using as few resources as possible for myself so I will have more for God and others. Stinginess is keeping back from others so I will have more for myself.

IV. Aspects of Thriftiness

  A. Being content with what I have (1 Tim. 6:8, Phil. 4:11, Luke 12:15)

    1. Out happiness shouldn’t be based on personal possessions

  B. Using creative means to stretch out things – Jacob increased his worth by wise use of animals

  C. Always counting the total costs (Prov. 11:16, 2 Chron. 2:8-10- Solomon bargained with King Hiram. Solomon knew what the cost would be

  D. Not being wasteful (Matt. 14:20. Prov. 12:27) F.K. when they built the power plant

  E. Saving during times of plenty

    1. Old adage –“the more we have the more we spend” (Ecc. 5:11, Gen. 41: Joseph

    2. Thriftiness requires long-range goals, which are far more important than immediate luxuries.

V. Requirements of Thriftiness

  A. Faithful in little things

  B. Faithfulness in the use of money

  C. Faithfulness in use of that which belongs to others
