  Do Not Lust    Matt. 5:28-30   Wednesday Night Bible Study   3/16/04

  In our generation many have become calloused to immorality and have accepted lust as a normal and harmless activity. Our conscience has been dulled to the dangers and eternal damage that can occur. What can sear our conscience? 1 Tim. 4:2 –

  Since losing one eye or hand will not conquer lust, why did Jesus give such a command?

 

I. The Significance of the Right

  A. The Eye

    1.Verse should be taken figuratively – one eye will not stop us from lusting

    2. It is thru the eyes that we receive images that direst our hands and feet. The right eye is usually the dominant one

      a. Matt. 6:22 -

    3. Instances of the eye

      a. Offend – scandal (to entrap, to entice)

  B. The Hand – the term “right hand” is full of symbolic meaning

    1. Acts 5:31 - honor

    2. Rom. 8:34 – authority

    3. Psalms 20:6 – protection

    4. Psalms 21:8 – discernment

    5. Psalms 98:1 – victory

    6. Gal. 2:9 – fellowship

      a. We give the right hand of fellowship

 

II. The Significance of Dedication

  A. Dedicate our eyes, hands and heart to the Lord

    1. Rom. 6:19 -

    2. Rom. 12:1-2-

  B. Make a covenant with both eyes

    1. Job 2:3 – look what God has to say about Job. What was his secret?

      a. Job 31:1 – Job trained his eyes to see what God wanted him to see

 

III. The Significance of Pondering

  A. Have I purposed in my heart to conquer lust?

  B. Have I purposed to flee youthful lusts (2 Tim. 2:22)?

  C. Have I purposed to make no provision for the flesh (Rom. 13:14)?
