Leaders Are Born, Leadership is Learned

When I look into the Life of Moses, I find one of the greatest - if not the greatest human leaders. Of course - the Lord Jesus Christ was the greatest, but the God has given us entrance into the humble beginnings, his faults & failures, as well as he unbelievable accomplishments...
We see a Moses- a man with skin on him and we are able to identify...
In the next 3 weeks, I will endeavor to bring out some things that are reachable...
It is hard to identify with some leadership lessons when you are on such a different plane than the one teaching...
I love Pastor Trieber & Pastor Chappell, but sometimes what they do is on such a different level, that it’s not apple for apples -
Sort of like a small business owner - taking coaching tips from:
Jeff Bezos - CEO & President of Amazon
Tim Cook - CEO of Apple -
on Monday - 8/24/20, He received his annual stock payout - $287 Million dollars… -
He generously gave 1.7% to charity… 5 mil.
These numbers / the scope / size is so far beyond what we can imagine...
But when you start at the beginning, it is a little easier to grasp...
Exodus 2:1–10 KJV 1900
1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. 3 And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch, and put the child therein; and she laid it in the flags by the river’s brink. 4 And his sister stood afar off, to wit what would be done to him. 5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her maid to fetch it. 6 And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children. 7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee? 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the maid went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.

Leaders Are Born, Leadership is Learned

Pray:
We have all hear the statement - “He / she is a born leader”
We all know what they mean - some people have a:
Presence about themselves
Personality that draws people to them
Purpose - driven
Passion -
Performance - they produce...
We look at them - are a little jealous and see the cracks and chinks in our armor - wondering why we were left out - when it came to those genetics that make up their Leadership DNA...
What are some things that we can see about Moses - his leadership DNA
In Genetics, we see that DNA is passed down to the next generation in big chunks called Chromosomes...
50% from each parent
25% Grandparents
12.5% Great grandparents
6.25% Great, great grandparents
3.125% Great, great, great grandparents
nothing from great, great, great, great grandparent
We are our parents… grandparents… etc… the sum of 5 previous generations

1. Moses was born into a family of leaders...

Amram
Jochabed -
a time of Egyptian oppression -
a time when male children were being killed at birth...
Jochabed - named 2 times in the bible - but she was a leader -
Amram was mentioned 15 x’s - but we know less of him than mom...
She pondered - 9 months to think (boy / girl)
She planned - what to do with this little boy - 3 months
Exodus 2:2 KJV 1900
2 And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.
When you think about a newborn - you look into the face of innocence - how could you see anything but good?
She prepared -
Her kids -
Miriam
Aaron
Her hope - Ark -
place of salvation
Moses became a great leader...
Aaron became a great leader...
Miriam was a leader
Jochabed was a leader
I’m gonna go out on a limb and say dad must have been a great leader...
you don’t have an entire family of leaders accidentally
Moses was born into a family of leaders

2. Moses was Led to Learn from Leaders

Exodus 2:10–11 KJV 1900
10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water. 11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.
According to Jewish tradition - Pharaoh’s daughter was an only child, and had no child of her own - this placed Moses - her adopted son in line for the crown
The Sovereignty of God reveals itself in the circumstances that put Moses in a place of teaching and training for a Prepared Position
We see this same scenario in the life of Joseph
Labor - Potiphar, prison,
Leading
Potipher / Prison / Power of Egypt and Protector of the Hebrew nation
We see this with Daniel & the 3 Hebrew boys
3 years of teaching / training - to see if they were able to stand in the Kings court...
Training continued and the learning continued...
We see this even in our current culture
President Trump’s children -
Donald Jr
Eric
Ivanka
Children of Royalty -
children of statesmen
Not saying that there aren’t exceptions - but it an exception to have someone who has been given much to not have the tools to succeed.
how many elite athletes have family that are in NCAA sports / professional sports and or become prominent business professionals
What is promoted from leaders to prepare leaders?
1. Excellence
God prepares people for a task - He even used godless kings / trainers, educators -
it was important for Moses to be prepared for what was in his future...
are we preparing the next generation for mediocrity or excellence...
Moses had to be taught how to
lead...
judge
communicate
make decisions
oversee
plan
etc.. etc… etc...
EXCELLENCE
2. Education
There is a different view of education as a whole in yuba / sutter vs. many other places in the nation.
Education is a tool that will advance or will hinder the future generations.
EXCELLENCE
EDUCATION
3. Endurance
pushing through the obstacles
don’t bail you kids out
don’t expect a bailout yourself...
athletes have trained for years preparing them for their sport...
The 2020 Olympics have been postponed - these athletes have pushed / trained… but now its moved back - Here is part of a post for the Olympic Athletes:
cc. Athletes in Action
While some athletes can take advantage of the extra training time, time is not necessarily a friend for older athletes.
A British athlete said a week ago that he might retire if the Tokyo Olympics are canceled. He’s facing the reality that his body will soon be past its prime. Will he keep training for one more year?
How can an athlete maintain focus with the time he or she has?
Press On
Make adjustments, but stick to the plan of competing.
Even if it means revising your training schedule.
Even if it means training alone.
Even if it means training in inclement weather while the gyms are closed.
Even when competitions are canceled.
Even if it means paying out of pocket to travel to alternative competitions.
Resist the urge to give up. Seek for the strength to press on. Finish strong.
The Bible teaches in times of difficulty, to keep our eyes on the prize. The apostle Paul wrote,
Philippians 3:13–14 KJV 1900
13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul referenced hardships that he faced in life, but he encouraged Christians to stay focused on Jesus. In the midst of COVID-19, and the anxiety that it produces, it's essential to keep our eyes on Jesus
Hebrews 12:2 KJV 1900
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Nothing in life is guaranteed
It’s easy to forget that every breath, muscle movement, and heartbeat is a gift from God. Athletic ability is a gift from God. Opportunities to compete are gifts from God. Blessings like these ought to be embraced, because they are not guaranteed.
The Bible teaches that our days are numbered (Job 14, Psalm 39:4,5, Psalm 139:16).
Life is a mystery. Only God knows the timing of birth and death, and life in between. God knew when COVID-19 would become a pandemic, and only He knows when its time will come to pass.
Psalm 39 is a song that describes life as fragile and short-lived. The Psalmist writes to God, “Make me to know mine end,
And the measure of my days, what it is;
That I may know how frail I am.”
The encouragement is for us to place hope in Jesus. He is the meaning of life.
While Christian athletes must make the most of the life that is given, we must also live as though there is no tomorrow.
Matthew 24 describes “signs of the end of the age” and teaches that “no one knows about that day or hour” that Christ will return to earth. Jesus is teaching His followers to be ready for His return.
so much focus on an event - a season of life - the prize if you would...
The Christian life is not just activity - it is giving God our best - all the time...

4. Ethics
Bro. Franklin and I were talking about business ethics earlier this week - and I told him there really isn’t such a thing as:
business ethics
work ethics
moral ethics
political ethics...
It is either ethical or unethical
you either have ethics or you don’t
People will refer to someone and say that they have a great work ethic… and that is meant as a compliment - but all it is doing is revealing the lack of ethics that separate one individual from the other...
Work hard - that’s ethical… really - just work…
if you are not working hard
if you are not giving your best - you are unethical...
People will say - they aren’t paying me enough to give my best / work hard - then have the ethics / honesty - to quit or renegotiate your worth...
I’m worth more that $$$ that’s like what the tribe of Joseph told Joshua:
Joshua 17:14–18 KJV 1900
14 And the children of Joseph spake unto Joshua, saying, Why hast thou given me but one lot and one portion to inherit, seeing I am a great people, forasmuch as the Lord hath blessed me hitherto? 15 And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood country, and cut down for thyself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee. 16 And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of Jezreel. 17 And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only: 18 But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the Canaanites, though they have iron chariots, and though they be strong.
I was in Bible college, working as a mechanic - I did not have a lot of experience, and the owner of the shop said that he would hire me and as soon as I could prove myself - he would give me a raise that was comperable to the industry standard.
I worked - a year - proving myself - I would bring jobs in well below book time and I was making him money. After a year, I went back to him and asked him for a raise - He said that I was doing a great job, but he wasn’t going to change my pay. The next week I found a new job - with a $5 hour pay increase… I was making $8 hour. But I worked hard for him, never slacked up… Ethics - be ethical...

LEADERS ARE BORN - LEADERSHIP IS LEARNED
We were all born - we have the opportunity of leading - but just being born doesn’t make you a leader...
just having good tools does not make you a leader...
LEADERSHIP IS LEARNED.
