Transcript

The LORD Our God Is One (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

Key terms: Hear (shema), LORD (YHWH, cf. Ex. 3:14-15), God (Elohim).
There is only one LORD God who saved Israel (6:10-12). Therefore that God and no other deserves the absolute commitment of love (6:5) and obedience (6:13). This also means that no other god should be worshiped (6:14-15).

The Jealous God (Exodus 20:1-6)

Notice that this passage also begins with God’s mighty work of deliverance (20:1-2). Therefore there is to be no rival to God for the people’s affections (20:3).
This includes idolatry, worshiping a likeness of something that is created rather than worshiping the Creator (20:4).
God is jealous (20:5; Deut. 6:15; 4:24; 5:9). His name is “Jealous”! (Ex. 34:14). This is obviously “sort of like” rather than “just like” human jealousy. Similar to the way a devoted husband is passionate about the exclusive commitment of marriage, God is passionate about the exclusive relationship with his people.
Application
Jesus quoted Deut. 6:16 in Matthew 4:10. He recognized that what we serve is what we really worship. What are some common ways to serve (and therefore ultimately worship) something other than God?
