HOOK

How to become a Life Group HOST?
Welcome back to the verse by verse study of the Gospel of John
Yesterday right here at “The Message” we completed chapter 17 of the gospel of John— the prayer of the Lord ended his farewell discourse— His prayer was in 3 parts, and from the last part of the prayer, which was his prayer for all believers we learned the following:
OUR UNITY IS A TESTIMONY TO THE WORLD— in his prayer He mentioned “unity” one way or the other for (5) five times!
OUR LOVE IS A WITNESS THAT JESUS WAS SENT BY THE FATHER
Open your Bible to JOHN 18:1-14, once you get there, type Amen!
SIN TO CONFESS, PROMISES TO CLAIM, ATTITUDE TO CHANGE, COMMANDS TO KEEP, EXAMPLES TO FOLLOW, PRAYERS TO PRAY, ERRORS TO AVOID, TRUTH TO BELIEVE, SOMETHING TO THANK GOD FOR
Read JOHN 18:1-14

BOOK

John 18:1–14 NIV
1 When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it. 2 Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place, because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. 4 Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?” 5 “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) 6 When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. 7 Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?” “Jesus of Nazareth,” they said. 8 Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.” 9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.” 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. (The servant’s name was Malchus.) 11 Jesus commanded Peter, “Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me?” 12 Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him 13 and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. 14 Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people.
WHAT: Jesus was arrested
WHEN: The night he was betrayed
WHERE: Kidron Valley [Kitron]— Garden of Gethsemane— it is the valley the separated the walled City of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives
WHO: Jesus and his disciples— later joined by the arresting party led by Judas— The chief priest had their own military guard who acted at temple police— [seems like the Vatican today]
WHY: So that the prophecy may be fulfilled

LOOK

KNOWING ALL THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN
Here again we see that Jesus— our God is all-knowing— Omniscient
THEY DREW BACK AND FELL TO THE GROUND
This really struck me— when Jesus said I am he, they fell to the ground! That’s the power of His name
THIS HAPPENED SO THAT THE WORDS HE HAD SPOKEN WOULD BE FULFILLED
Which words— when Jesus said, “I have not lost one of those you gave me”— [JOHN 17:12]
STRUCK THE HIGH PRIEST SERVANT, CUTTING OFF HIS RIGHT EAR
The servant’s name was Malchus
But Jesus immediately ordered Peter, “put your sword away!”— miraculously healed Malchus’ ears [LUKE 22:51]
Jesus said something very interesting in MATTHEW 26:52
and then he asked…
SHALL I NOT DRINK THE CUP THE FATHER HAS GIVEN ME?
What cup was the Lord talking about?— the sufferings that awaits him— the will of the Father
ANNAS, WHO WAS THE FATHER-IN-LAW OF CAIAPHAS
The high priest had their term in office— The High Priests in the NT are Annas [6-15AD], CAIAPHAS [18-36AD] and Ananias [47-58AD]
To illustrate— the high priests of the Judaism religion was like the “Pope” of the Catholic religion
Our take away or Life Application for today is not exactly from the actual passage we studied by from the gospel of Matthew— when Jesus said..
Matthew 26:52 NIV
52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.
Genesis 9:6 NIV
6 “Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.
Establishes the principle of capital punishment

TOOK

CRIME DOES NOT PAY
This is an idiom that means crime does not benefit the criminal, and only results in negative consequences.
