13 for my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

Jeremiah served as a prophet to Judah from 627 BC until the Exile in 586 BC.
Climate of the Times
Society was deteriorating economically, politically, and spiritually. Wars and captivity dominated the world scene. God’s word was deemed offensive.
Jeremiah’s Main Message
Repentance from sin would postpone Judah’s coming judgment at the hands of Babylon.
Application of This Message Today
Repentance is one of the greatest needs in our immoral world. God’s promises to the faithful shine brightly by bringing hope for tomorrow and strength for today.
1:1-2 After King Solomon’s death, the united kingdom of Israel had split into rival northern and southern kingdoms. The northern kingdom was called Israel; the southern, Judah. Jeremiah was from Anathoth, four miles north of Jerusalem in the southern kingdom. He lived and prophesied during the reigns of the last five kings of Judah. This was a chaotic time politically, morally, and spiritually. As Babylonia, Egypt, and Assyria battled for world supremacy, Judah found itself caught in the middle of the triangle. Although Jeremiah prophesied for 40 years, he never saw his people heed his words and turn from their sins. He did, however, see them taken into Babylonian captivity as he had prophesied.
2:1–3:5 In this section, the marriage analogy sharply contrasts God’s love for his people with their love for other gods and reveals Judah’s faithlessness. Jeremiah condemned Judah (he sometimes referred to Judah as Jerusalem, the name of its capital city) for seeking security in worthless, changeable things rather than the unchangeable God. We may be tempted to seek security from possessions, people, or our own abilities, but over time these will fail us. No lasting security can be found apart from the eternal God.
2:13 Who would trade a bubbling fountain or spring of fresh water for a cracked, broken cistern—a pit for collecting rainwater—that couldn’t even hold water? God told the Israelites they were doing that very thing when they turned from him, the “fountain of living water,” to the worship of idols. The people had built their own belief system to store what they thought was better, but it turned out to be leaky and worthless. Why should we cling to the promises of broken “cisterns,” such as money, power, self-made beliefs, or whatever we are choosing in place of God, when God promises to constantly refresh us with himself, the living water (John 4:10)? Only he can truly satisfy.(SAMARITAN WOMAN)
Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

1:28 Canaan was a land with giants and imposing fortresses. The descendants of Anak may have been seven to nine feet tall. Many of the land’s fortified cities had walls as high as 30 feet. The Israelites’ fear was understandable but not justified, for the all-powerful God had already promised them victory.
1:45-46 The Israelites stayed at Kadesh for a long time. They had been disobedient but now were willing to wait on the Lord for direction. At times, we may find ourselves in a “Kadesh moment,” simply sitting and waiting to find out what the Lord would have us do next. We may feel as though God refuses to listen to us. We need to encourage each other to remain faithful during these times of waiting.

3:15 Laodicea was the wealthiest of the seven cities, known for its banking industry, its manufacture of wool, and a medical school that produced eye ointment. But the city had always had a problem with its water supply. At one time an aqueduct was built to bring water to the city from hot springs. But by the time the water reached the city, it was neither hot nor refreshingly cool—only lukewarm. Lukewarm water makes a disgusting drink.
The church in Laodicea had become lukewarm in faith and thus distasteful and repugnant. The believers didn’t take a stand for anything; apathy and indifference had led to idleness. By neglecting to do anything for Christ, the church had become hard-hearted and self-satisfied. It was destroying itself. God won’t use an apathetic, self-sufficient, nominal Christian. Don’t settle for following God halfway. Let Christ fire up your faith and get you into the action.
3:17 Some believers falsely assume that having lots of money and possessions is a sign of God’s spiritual blessing. Laodicea was a wealthy city, and the church was also wealthy. But what the Laodiceans could see and buy had become more valuable to them than what is unseen and eternal. Wealth, luxury, and ease can make people feel confident, satisfied, and complacent. But no matter how much you possess or how much money you make, you have nothing if you don’t have a vital relationship with Christ. How does your current level of wealth affect your spiritual desire?

DESTRUCTION - The demolition or eradication of buildings, peoples or individuals. Since God is the Creator and sustainer of all things, wanton ruin is contrary to his will as his original purposes cannot be fulfilled. God will bring about the final destruction of all that is evil in the last judgment.
and IMPORTANCE OF TRUST - Scripture emphasises the importance of putting one’s trust in God. This trust, which is nurtured by an understanding of God’s revealed truth, finds expression in a life lived according to his purpose. There are examples in Scripture of proper trust being placed in other people.
