Actions and Benefits of the Holy Spirit Actions and Benefits for Everyone 1. He ____________________________: He bears witness of the truth John 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. (14:16,26) 1 John 5:6b ... And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. 2. He __________________: He causes people to understand the truth John 16:7-11 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 "And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 "of sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 "of righteousness, because I go to My Father and you see Me no more; 11 "of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 3. He _________________: He prevents sin from overtaking the world 2 Thes 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. Actions and Benefits for Believers 1. He ________________________: He brings believers to spiritual life Tit 3:5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, John 3:5 Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 2. He _______________: He makes believers part of the Body of Christ 1 Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body-- whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free-- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. Eph 4:3 endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. 3. He _________: He secures and marks believers as belonging to God 2 Cor 1:21-22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22 who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. Eph 1:13-14 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. (cf. 2 Cor 5:5) Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 4. He ____________________________: He lives within believers 1 Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? (cf. Rom 8:9-11; 1 Cor 6:19-20; 2 Tim 1:14) 5. He __________________: He witnesses to us that we belong to God Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, "Abba, Father!" Northridge Baptist Church – Pastor Kevin Subra – August 2, 2020 Rom 8:15-16 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, "Abba, Father." The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 6. He _______________: He gives believers abilities to serve the body 1 Cor 12:4,7 There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: (cf. 12:1-11) 7. He ____________________________: He gives the ability to witness Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." 8. He ___________________: He helps believers understand the Word 1 Cor 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 9. He ________________________: He gives power to live righteously Rom 8:13-14 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. (cf. Romans 8:1-16; 15:13) Gal 5:16-25 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Eph 5:18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (cp. Col 3:16; cf. Eph 3:16) 10. He ____________________: He provides the conduit to talk to God Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Eph 6:18 praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints Jude 1:20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 11. He ____________________: He prays for us according to God’s will Rom 8:26-27 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
