Good evening students! It is so good to finally see each of you guys. Jesse and I, along with TJ, Brittany, and Breanna have been eagerly awaiting getting to be with you guys. Now, that we are finally together, we can worship together as a student ministry.
Since we have been in quarantine over that past four months, let start off with a game to help you guys get ready for tonight. (Play “Sit Down If”)
Good job guys. That was fun. I know many of you have been in quarantine so much that you are now sick of it. But one thing is for sure, it makes gathering back together so much better.
Tonight, we are beginning a new series in which we are going to look at the storyline of Scripture. In this series, we are going to hit all the highlights of the Bible so that you guys can have a basic understanding of the Word of God.
So our first message is going to be on the Creation. Many of you may be very familiar with the creation story; however, this will be very important because the creation will affect how we view the rest of Scripture.
With that being said, open your Bibles with me to Genesis 1. It is the very first chapter in your Bibles.
Let’s read Genesis 1-2:3

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

6 And God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 And God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so. 8 And God called the expanse Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, the second day.

9 And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. 10 God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, the third day.

14 And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so. 16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars. 17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

20 And God said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.” 21 So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 And there was evening and there was morning, the fifth day.

24 And God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so. 25 And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds and the livestock according to their kinds, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27  So God created man in his own image,

in the image of God he created him;

male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

The Seventh Day, God Rests

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Pray.

God created the heavens and the earth! (Gen. 1-2:3)

Genesis tells us the story of how everything came into existence. If you have ever been to science class, science likes to argue that the earth came into existence from a big bang or some cosmic collision. However, the Word of God tells us that God created the heavens and the earth.
Verse 1 tells us that God created the earth and the heavens. What we are living on right now was created by God. Everything that we see from the trees to the rivers to the oceans and mountains was created by God. God is the creator of the universe. Every star and galaxy and the entirety of the universe was created by God as well. As we saw in the Scripture,
Day one: God created the heavens, the earth, and day and night. (vv. 1-5)
Day two: God created the sky. (vv. 6-8)
Day three: God created land and vegetation. (vv. 9-13)
Day four: God created the sun, moon, and the seasons. (vv. 14-19)
Day five: God created the birds and water creatures. (vv. 20-23)
Day six: God created animals, and God created mankind. (vv. 24-31)
Day seven: God rested. (2:1-3)
God created all of creation within 6 days and rested on the seventh day. Everything that you see here on earth and even the things that you do not see are created by God. Just think about those microscopic bacteria for instance. Those were created by God. This should reveal to us just how awesome the God that we serve is. He created all of these things within 6, 24-hour days. The earth, universe, sun, moon, animals, trees, rivers, oceans, fish, and even us. We were all created by God.
With that being said, we must seek to understand who God is. If you were on the zoom calls with us any this summer, we covered this in one of our zoom meetings. God is three-in-one. This is present within tonight’s passage. God is three distinct persons, yet one God. Think of it this way, there is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
So, God the Father is the One speaking things into existence out of nothing. God the Father simply speaks and things come into being.
God the Holy Spirit is active in creation as well.
Look back to verse 2, “And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” The Holy Spirit also played a part in the creation.
Jesus was active in the creation of the universe.
Hang with me on this one. Turn in your Bibles to John 1:1,
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. -John 1:1
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Jn 1:1). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
The Word in that verse is Jesus. Jesus is God and always has been. Also look at John 1:3,
All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made -John 1:3
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Jn 1:3). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Jesus was active in the creation. As God spoke His Word, the Word (Jesus) made everything in which God spoke. So, in that we see that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit were present within the Creation of the universe.
So to wrap up point 1, we understand that God is three-in-one. He is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit who created the universe. This shows us how awesome the God we serve is.

God made man in His image! (Gen. 1:26-31; 2:5-9, 15-25)

Man is not another animal. Man is created in the likeness or the image of God. This sets man apart from any other created thing. Nothing else that was created bears the image of God. God has blessed mankind with this blessing of being made in His image.
This is why we, as human beings, are referred to as image bearers. Humanity is created in God’s image and for God’s glory. At this point in the Bible, humanity and the creation was good. God has created man in His image to have dominion over the fish, birds, and every living thing. This means that man has the ability to use what God has created. God has placed man over these created things. Now, man has the responsibility of properly managing or stewarding God’s creation. All of humanity has this responsibility because all of humanity is made in the image of God.
Knowing that all of humanity is made in God’s image addresses two issues within our culture.
Every human life has value. God has created every human being, and every human being is created in the image of God; therefore, every human being has value. This means that we treat every human life with respect and dignity. Your life matters because God created you in His image. If anyone ever says anything about your appearance that does not mean anything. You are made the way God intended you to be made and that is in His image.
Psalm 139:13-4 says,
13  For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14  I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well. -Psalm 139:13-14
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Ps 139:13–14). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
Secondly, notice that God created the mankind in two sexes. There is only male and female as God says in Genesis 1:27. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. God created every person as either a male or female, there are no other sexes other than male or female.
We see that God created man on the sixth day; however, if we want more detail, we turn to Genesis 2. Let’s look at verses 5-9 and 15-25.
God made Adam first. The word adam in the hebrew means mankind. God made Adam first from the dirt of the earth and breathed life into him.
God then recognized that Adam was alone in the Garden of Eden, so God made him a helper. God made for man woman. The woman, or wife, is man’s, or the husband’s, helper as the Bible states here. As God created Adam, He created Eve. God created woman to be with man. Here, we see the first marriage within the Bible. God has made man in His own image. He has created mankind as male and female. Male and female come together in marriage. Biblical marriage is between one man and one woman. Any other type of marriage is sinful. Marriage is between one man and one woman as God designed it to be here in Scripture.
This reveals to us that God is a God of order. He creates things within His Sovereign order.

Man disobeyed God and fell to sin! (Gen. 3)

Read Genesis 3:1-13.

Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made.

He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” 2 And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, ‘You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.

8 And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?” 12 The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Adam and Eve had one job and that was to not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. And what did they do? They went and ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
They knew that they had done wrong. Notice that after they sinned they went away and hid themselves. This was because they were ashamed. Remember God is a God of order and has control over all. God is also all-knowing. He knew that Adam and Eve had sinned. God knew Adam and Eve would sin from the very get go because He knows all things.
God then went on to curse the man and woman and serpent. Because God knew that all of humanity was affected by sin. His order in creation was messed up. That is why people die, diseases exist, and other bad things happen. We are living in a fallen world in a fallen condition.
Did you know that when Adam sinned, you were affected?
Look with me at Romans 5:12-14.

12 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come.

Because Adam sinned, now we all suffer from sin.
Everyone of us in this room has committed sin and messed up. We cannot go through life without sinning. This is what we call the fallen human condition. Get this, no matter how hard we try, we cannot even honor God on our own.
Because of this sin, we are separated from God.
Notice what Adam and Eve did after they sinned. They ran and hid. Why did they hide? They hid because they knew they were guilty from sin. Our sin causes us to run from God as well. Our sin causes us to follow the sinful things of this world and dishonor God. We lie, steal, cuss, dishonor our parents, commit adultery, and place idols before God. We are incapable of pleasing Him on our own.
So, how can we be saved?
We are saved by the second Adam, Jesus Christ.
Read Romans 5:15-21

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. 17 For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Give them the Gospel.
Pray and close.
