I. AS YOU RECEIVED HIM

Colossians 2:6 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
Christ is the Anointed One, the Messiah, the King. He is the Lord of salvation. He is Lord of all.
Colossians 1:15–20 ESV
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
“Bill Graham says in The Annals of America: No man can be said to be truly converted to Christ who has not bent his will to Christ. He may give intellectual assent to the claims of Christ and my have had emotional religious experiences; however, he is not truly converted until he has surrendered his will to Christ as Lord, Savior and Master.”

Spurgeon comments on this, saying:

It is interesting to notice that the Apostles preached the Lordship of Christ. The word Savior occurs only twice in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 5:31, 13:23). On the other hand it is amazing to notice the title “Lord” is mentioned 92 times; “Lord Jesus” 13 times; and “The Lord Jesus Christ” 6 times in the same book. The Gospel is: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.”3

Paul’s point is that the Colossians had “received Christ Jesus as Lord” and that they would remain safe from spiritual seduction (apostasy) if they continued to walk in submission to him.

II. SO WALK IN HIM

Colossians 2:6 ESV
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him,
Colossians 2:7 ESV
7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
“The Word of God praises people for their obedience, but any good that can be found in their obedience is grounded in the fact that they trust the Lord and are moved and empowered by Him to service.” July 15, 2020 TableTalk p. 49
