Mercy and Justice

Punishment is not fully and immediately given—Genesis 2:17.
God’s grace went forth with his mercy to temper the judgment. However, both judgment and grace will be fully experienced by the lost and saved respectively. Sin must be punished (Deut. 13:5; 17:7, 12; 22:21ff; 24:7).
Sin must be punished to prevent future sin (Deut. 13:11; 17:13; 19:20; 21:21).
Sin must be punished because of God’s glory, not because of man’s hatred or vengeance (Lev. 19:17-18; Prov. 24:29).

Crime and Punishment

The Old Testament stressed, more than any other law code, the demand of justice. The guilty may not be considered innocent—Deut. 25:1; Prv. 17:15; 24:24; Is. 5:23).
The righteous may not be condemned—Ex. 23:7; Deut. 25:1; Ps. 31:18; 34:21; 37:12; 94:21; Prov. 17:!5; Is. 5:23).
The poor and vulnerable are to be protected—Exod. 22:21; Deut. 23:6; 24:!4, 17. God is the God of justice.

Sin and Its Immediate Consequences

Sin is somewhat a punishment of its own.
“Sin by its very nature produces separation from God and thus carries with it darkness, ignorance, error, deception, fear, disquietude, a sense of guilt, regret, misery, and enslavement” (Bavinck).
Sin brings a guilty conscience, pollution of the soul, emotional and physical suffering, death—Psalm 90:7-12.

Dominion of Satan

John 8:44 ESV
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
2 Corinthians 11:31
John 5:19

Eternal Punishment

Matt. 10:28, Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matt. 25:46, these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.
Rev. 20:10, the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur..and they will be tormented day and night forever
Rev. 20:15, if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
