Ministry of Jesus is moving toward its crescendo.
The opposition has built.
John 12- the hour has come, he has just raised a dead man to life and the crowds are buzzing.
Passover is upon them
-huge crowds would fill the streets
-Josephus records that in Ad 66-70 that almost 2.8million would show up for the passover - Huge crowds - the city is buzzing over Lazarus and the crowds that was at the dinner is now leading the pack This is a big deal- its the perfect time- Galatians 4:4 says its was in fullness of time God sent Jesus
Romans 5:6 at the right time Christ died for the ungodly Jesus has stayed away from public confrontation but now he is going to embrace the crowds response and fuel the fire -Jesus was always waiting on Gods time, never was he running in fear- Now is the time
As we see this setting unfold- its Monday during the passion week- Jesus will die Friday -Thousands of lambs are coming into the city by the sheep gate- Its was said some 250k were killed each passover -As the city was filling with animals to pay the price of sin, Christ the Passover lamb as 1Cor 5:7 tells us was entering the city
-Final sacrifice for all mankind
I heard pastor say, Jesus was a strange lamb because he really was a lion of Judah He was an strange lion because he was the lamb of God He was strange king because he was a servant
Make now doubt- The King is coming in our text today and he is coming again one day - He will not ride on a colt next time, He will riding a white horse and vengeance will be his
But now lets see the King who came not to kill but to give his life as a ransom for many according to Matthew 20:28
Vs 1- All the Gospels record the Triumphal Entry
-Mark will connect Bethpage and Bethany to be close together
-John has Jesus going to Lazarus grave in John 11 and then leaving afterwards toward Jerusalem
-But also to a very familiar place- The Mt of Olives
Luke 22:39 ESV
And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him.
While Jesus was in this area, he made it a practice to go here to get away to pray and rest with his disciples
As they approach the city during this Passover,
Luke 22:1–2 ESV
Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called the Passover. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to put him to death, for they feared the people.
I share all of this set the back drop
Its Passover time, Tensions are high, Upwards of 2 million Jews in Jerusalem, They are tired of Rome, Many view Jesus to be the Messiah, Jesus has just raised a man from the dead, the RL want him dead
As this going on, Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem as God the Father, Son and HS so planned
Authority of the King
Matthew 21:1–2 ESV
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
the directions are simple- go get the two animals and bring the to me
Matthew 21:3 ESV
If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.”
Jesus backs his command up and says- if someone ask tell them the Lord needs them
-Jesus doesnt us this title often but it does remind us that as the Lord, all things are his and at his use for his purpose
Just as if any other king wanted something- he had it
Jesus being the King of Kings - has rightful ownership over all things
2. The Promise of the King
Matthew 21:4–5 ESV
This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ”
So this is quoted from Zech 9:9 and Is 62:11
So what we see is that Jesus is fulfilling the prophecy concerning himself as he makes his way to Jerusalem
The is a clear cut Messianic Prophecy of Jesus- can read the rest Zechariah 9 and see that more in depth
The people get it- you will see why in minute
Matthew 21:6–7 ESV
The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
We have no recorded objections from the disciples
-they just do what the King tells them to do
-I know this will appear to be common sense but i read commentators addressing this issue more than once
-Jesus only rides on the colt- He didnt straddle both animals
-the mother was brought with him because he had never been ridden before to keep him calm
-If their ever was a blessed animal- this was it
-Literally one may say, his life up to this point was for him to carry the King of Kings into the midst of his people
3. The Praise of the King
Matthew 21:8 ESV
Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
As Jesus began riding the colt into Jerusalem many people began to spread their cloaks on the road
this was a sign of honor meaning, We are in allegiance to you even if that means you have ride on our backs
But they also get palm branches and they cut them and place them on the road
This isnt something you do everyday
Lets not forget whats going on at this time
Its Passover- a time of remembering what? deliverance from Egypt
As Jews would travel up to Jerusalem they would sing the Psalms
Specifically the Hallel Psalms 113-118 and the Psalms of Ascent 119-134
Psalms 114 specifically speak of God delivering the Hebrews out of Egypt
So as they travel to the city they are singing songs of praise to God and looking forward to his promised redeemer
For years Israel has been enslaved and now their is Jesus
He calls himself the Son of Man- clearly Messianic title
He performs miracles no one else can, he speak of authority no one else does, and he has just raised someone from the dead
Matthew 21:9 ESV
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
They are putting two and two together
Many know the Messianic prophecy- the disciples Mother just talked about having her sons sit in the positions of authority in the Kingdom
Blind Bartimeous knew he was the Son of David
Even though he is riding in on colt- a mark of peace not power
Its not a war horse like King would ride in on in applause after battle but they miss that part
John 12:16 ESV
His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him.
The disciples didn't even put these together
We have the Messiah, we have our deliverer from Rome, and we have 2 million people in the city
Praise God the Messiah is here
Even if their praise is misdirected it is what He always deserved
Listen to their words- Hosanna to the Son of God
-Hosanna-Means “Save us, we pray”- Find this is Psalm 118:25
Psalm 118:26 ESV
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you from the house of the Lord.
We see their second admonition
You can feel their tension rising - Keep in mind Daniel 7- Son of Man coming to establish his kingdom
Here he is, Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna
Matthew 21:10 ESV
And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?”
So as Jesus approaches Jerusalem, his coming was made known and the whole city was in a uproar
The word for stirred probably doesn’t carry the effect that it does in the Greek
It is a word that is used to describe an earthquake
As if the ground is trembling in frenzy
John will record that they came to see Jesus because he rose Lazarus from the grave
John 12:19 ESV
So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.”
Luke says
Luke 19:39–40 ESV
And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Matthew 21:11 ESV
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
Matthew 21:11 ESV
And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”
As Jesus made his way into the city, many may not have known directly who he was because he stayed away from confrontation with the RL until the time had come to take the throne
But it wouldnt but overthrowing the Romans or by sitting on Herods throne
His glory would come in the shame of the cross as he overthrows the power sin, death and the grave
He is the Messiah they needed, just not the one they wanted
That may be the same for you today - the
Many heard the shouts, saw the procession, and even may have seen the miracles or have been the miracle but they never really understood the Messiahs mission
They indirectly gave him the praise he is due on this day but doesnt it mean much more if it was genuine
Because many of those voices will turn on him in a just a few days when he doesnt give them what they want- Rome to be gone
By virtue of existence you bring glory to God because your made in the Image of God
Unbeliever- Would you see the love of God today repent, because if not, the wrath that Jesus endures on the cross is still applied to your account- you will endure that
But when your saved by grace through faith in Jesus- you get to directly pour your heart out to him in grateful praise
For the believer today- The King is Here- will you live a life if grateful praise to the King
Fathers and Mothers- Love God, Family and then everything else afterwards
That gets twisted at times doesnt it
Youth- its God first- At times we seek a relationship first, stuff first, drugs and alcohol first because we think it will satisfy our desires
You are made in the image of God- you are made to worship God
Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
