The bible shows us the long history of division among all of mankind on the earth. It is so ingrained in us that we immediately begin making distinctions about people once we meet them. While noticing differences among people are not completely wrong (are they safe or unsafe), allowing those distinctions to get in the way of the unity in the body of Christ is wrong. In his letter to the church in Colossae, Paul highlights the existence of manmade distinctions and also how to overcome them. This list, and the solution he gave, is just as relevant today as it has been for the last 2,000 years.
Colossians 3:11 ESV
11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.

Here

The passage is about the distinction we should not be making.
This indicates that:
There is one distinction that should be made.
Once you are saved, you should see the world differently.

“there is not”

How should we understand this?
These distinctions should not be tolerated
A call to conform.
These distinctions should not be made.
A call for unity.
What kinds of distinctions does Paul list?
Racial divisions - Greek of Jew
Religious - Circumcised or uncircumcised
Education - Barbarian (anyone who didn’t speak Greek)
Social Standing- Scythian, slave or free
Paul is telling us these distinctions should not be made.
If we should conform based on race...
Which is to be that standard?
If we should conform based on education...
Who is educated enough? Is there a test?
If scripture is spiritually discerned, how is that any credit to you?
If we should conform based on social standing...
Explain why Christ spent so much tie with the outcasts?
Paul is not preaching conformity he is pleading for unity.
Jesus established the foundation of our unity.

“Christ is all, and in all”

Paul here is refocusing the problem back to the solution and that is Christ!
But this is also a warning...
One of the problems with our distinctions is that they become divisions.
t
When we our identity is rooted in Christ, then most of our differences will only glorify the diversity in our creator.
There is nothing wrong with noticing diversity but...
What the devil wants in division: My short time in Haifa, Israel.
