Holy Spirit over the last 6 weeks
“He” not “It” - He is a person
His presence is In You
His power Will Move You
He determines the gifts we need and use for the common good
He Has Principles that govern His actions
He is Holy and we should be Holy
Today is final in the series - not the last time we’ll discuss the Holy Spirit - just like it isn’t the last time we’ll speak of the love of God the Father and his gospel message through God the Son, Jesus. Our everyday living comes through God the Spirit, the Holy Spirit
TODAY How does the Holy Spirit secure us?
Our scripture today describes the security of God’s love
Romans 8:31–39 NIV
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Secure in God’s Love

Profound Indescribability
Pronounced Indestructibility
Possessed Inseparability
Tony Evans in his book “The Promise” states it this way “No Opposition, No Condemnation, No Separation”
In Paul’s letter to the Romans - our scripture today seems to be a climatic close to this part of the letter but I want to highlight it at the beginning of this message as we share how the Holy Spirit secures us.
Those last 2 verses 38- Paul is convinced
neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Profound Indescribability - in all creation!
Pronounced Indestructibility - angels/demon - time - powers
Possessed Inseparability - death/life - height/depth
Our security is centered in the love of God who sent His son Jesus who gave us salvation and His Holy Spirit

His Witness

Paul shared in Ephesians 1:13-14 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.
Wax seal of a King - government seal, corporate seal, notary seal
Down payment on a car, house, a layaway
When we believed - our security was set
A guarantee of our inheritance
This guaranteed security allows us to turn our focus on living for Jesus - we already belong to Jesus as we accept the gift of salvation. Now - as we talked over the last 6 weeks - the Holy Spirit is there to help us focus on living and not worry about the security of our salvation

His Trustworthiness

Anne Graham Lotz in her book “Jesus in Me” encourages us to Trust in the Holy Spirit’s pledge, his seal, his understanding, his prayers.
Pledge - like a wedding ring
Seal - as we discussed earlier about His witness
Understanding - God knows everything about us - he created us - why do we try and hide sometimes - he “gets us” - he knows us so deeply - His Holy Spirit prays for us when we not sure what to say - Romans 8:26-27 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.“ And in those times of prayer and in our time of reading his word - God speaks to us through His Spirit
Read John 17 - Jesus prayer - Anne Graham Lotz - says the Holy Spirit was there praying with Jesus. She suggests that the Spirit still prays those words for us today. He prays for our steadfast faith, our relationship with the Father, and for our needs.

Promise in Me

2 books beside the Bible - impact on me about the Holy Spirit
Title & Tagline
Tony Evans - “The Promise” - Experiencing God’s Greatest Gift the Holy Spirit
Anne Graham Lotz - “Jesus in Me” - Experiencing the Holy Spirit as a Constant Companion
