INTRODUCTION

Psalm 1 emphasizes God’s law while Psalm 2 focuses on prophecy. The people in Psalm 1 delight in the law, but the people in Psalm 2 defy the law. Psalm 1 begins with a beatitude and Psalm 2 ends with a beatitude. Psalm 1 is never quoted in the New Testament, while Psalm 2 is quoted or alluded to at least eighteen times, more than any single psalm.

It is a Messianic psalm, along with 8, 16, 22, 23, 40, 41, 45, 68, 69, 102, 110, and 118. The test of a Messianic psalm is that it is quoted in the New Testament as referring to Jesus (Luke 24:27, 44). But this is also a royal psalm, referring to the coronation of a Jewish king and the rebellion of some vassal nations that hoped to gain their freedom. Other

Psalm 2:1–12
Why do the heathen rage, And the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, And cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: The Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. I will declare the decree: The Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; This day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, And I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: Be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, And rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, And ye perish from the way, When his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Commotion (1)

“(1) Why do the heathen rage, And the people imagine a vain thing?”
This is a rhetorical question — expressing astonishment at the senseless rebellion of the world.
RAGE = רָגְשׁ֣וּ “rogsu” — be in rebellion, formally, be restless, i.e., conspire to be in open defiance of a king at a coronation, implying tumult and disorderly conduct in the act. of attempting the overthrow of government
Swanson, J. (1997). Dictionary of Biblical Languages with Semantic Domains : Hebrew (Old Testament) (electronic ed.). Oak Harbor: Logos Research Systems, Inc.
VAIN = רִֽיק׃ “riq” — empty, empty scheme
STATEMENT — In their senseless anger against the God of the universe, the world schemes and plans, and imagines. They devise ways to usurp God from His rightful place.
Romans 1:21–25
Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Theories & Schemes
Big Bang
Evolution
QUOTE — “Perhaps the most remarkable movement in philosophic thought that has occurred in any age was the rise and general acceptance by scientific circles of the evolutionary theory as propounded by Darwin, Huxley and Spencer. It was remarkable that men of science, whose peculiar boast it is that they deal only with established facts, should have so readily departed from this rule and accepted a system based upon hypothesis only, and which was, and is still after the lapse of forty years, without a single known fact to support it. Even when allowance is made for the well-known eagerness of many scientists to do away with all dualism, which was Mr. Darwin’s aim, it was still remarkable that men of trained intellect should have so promptly accepted at face value his two principal works, in which the expression, ‘We may well suppose,’ occurs over eight hundred times, as a basis for the argument.” — R.A. Torrey

1 Corinthians 3:18–20
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
STATEMENT — Time and time again, men have discovered that their presumptions and presuppositions, their beliefs and best guesses, have been totally wrong — and God's Word has remained ever true.
Romans 3:4 KJV 1900
God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.
STATEMENT — We hold in our hands the truth, through and through, given by inspiration of God, and unchanged by the passing of time. The world may imagine a vain thing, they may stir up trouble, they may make a lot of noise, they may try to throw us off our focus, but here, within our hands, we have the tool by which we can cut through the commotion and know what is true!
John 17:13–17
And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

Conspiracy (2-3)

“(2) The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord, and against his anointed, saying, (3) Let us break their bands asunder, And cast away their cords from us.”
STATEMENT — Conspiracy is as old as the world itself — since the day the Devil said “I will be like the Most High” and among humanity since he asked Eve, “yea, hath God said?”
Isaiah 14:12–15
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.
The great conspirator in heaven pulled a third of God’s angels down with him, and his aim was the same as that of every sinful soul — to usurp God.
Genesis 3:1–6
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
The Devil, appealed to Eve’s pride. He convinced her to usurp God in her own life. And she gave in.
STATEMENT — From the beginning of time, there has been a global conspiracy — led by the Devil, and perpetrated by the children of the Devil. It is an unending war against the God of the Universe.
Ephesians 6:10–13
Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
STATEMENT — What we are witnessing, is the intensity of that war increasing. Where schemes were hidden, they are now coming into the light. We are so deep into this battle and so desensitized to its skirmishes, that what would have once shocked us, no longer surprises us.
STATEMENT — Is this a plan-demic? Are the things we are seeing part of some grand, global conspiracy? Of course it is. It always has been. And there is nothing that we can do to stop that. Until the day that Jesus puts an end to the dissidents, the heathen will continue to rage.

Confidence (4-5)

“(4) He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: The Lord shall have them in derision. (5) Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex them in his sore displeasure.”
STATEMENT — God is not worried.
ILLUSTRATION — Desert Storm
Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait. The initial conflict to expel Iraqi troops from Kuwait began with an aerial and naval bombardment on 17 January 1991, continuing for five weeks. This was followed by a ground assault on 24 February. This was a decisive victory for the coalition forces, who liberated Kuwait and advanced into Iraqi territory. The coalition ceased its advance and declared a ceasefire 100 hours after the ground campaign started.
The Iraqis suffered the loss of over 3,000 tanks and over 2,000 other combat vehicles during these battles against the American-led coalition. It was not what kids on the playground might call a fair fight. But their’s a more uneven battle coming:
Revelation 19:19–21
And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
STATEMENT — Jesus, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, will one day return to claim His Kingdom, bringing with Him the greatest invasion force ever seen. The world and the Devil will gather their armies against Him, but no shot is fired, He merely speaks and they are all wiped out.
No matter what the world might do or say, our God is not shaken, our God is not concerned. He is confident, and we can place our confidence in Him.
Romans 8:31
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Christ (6-7)

“(6) Yet have I set my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. (7) I will declare the decree: The Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; This day have I begotten thee.”
STATEMENTThis Psalm speaks of Jesus Christ — of His betrayal and death, of His resurrection, and of His Second Coming as King.
His Betrayal & Death
Acts 4:24–28
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
His Resurrection
Acts 13:32–33
And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
All their conspiracies, all their schemes, and God accomplished our redemption.
John 18:33–38
Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews? Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me? Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done? Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence. Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
John 19:10–11
Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
STATEMENTThe religious leaders thought they would be rid of this man forever, that they were insuring their own power and their own control. They thought they had finally beaten Him, but God was using their conspiracies to complete the mission of Christ.

Coronation (8-9)

“(8) Ask of me, And I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. (9) Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; Thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
Romans 14:10–12
But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
Philippians 2:5–11
Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
STATEMENT — There’s a coronation day coming, when all the earth will bow before her King.
Revelation 19:11–16
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

Call (10-12)

“(10) Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: Be instructed, ye judges of the earth. (11) Serve the Lord with fear, And rejoice with trembling. (12) Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, And ye perish from the way, When his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”
STATEMENT — God in grace and mercy pleads with the Nations of the World — be wise, be warned, repent today!
This warning rings out like the preaching of Noah, Lot, Jonah, John the Baptist, and Jesus Himself — repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!
Are you ready for that day? Have you fallen at His feet, receiving His grace, or will you be destroyed by His judgment to come?\
Are you living in light of His return?
1 John 3:2–3
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
1 Thessalonians 5:1–11
But of the times and the seasons, brethren, ye have no need that I write unto you. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night. But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation. For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.
ILLUSTRATION — The Urgency of Our Message in Light of His Soon Return
The great preacher F.B. Meyer once asked D.L. Moody, “What is the secret of your success?”  Moody replied, “For many years I have never given an address without the consciousness that the Lord may come before I have finished.”
