Romans 8:18 CSB
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is going to be revealed to us.
INTRO—
FREEDOM!!!!!
Fitting on this weekend that we continue on the Freedom Road…now, let’s remember that this temporal, temporary freedom we enjoy (& make no mistake, we celebrate and enjoy the freedom which has been fought for so valiantly over the years) here in the USA…but it pales in comparison to the eternal freedom we see here in the Book of Romans, specifically chapter 8. The echoes of this freedom stand out in Scripture:
Last week:
John 8:32 CSB
You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Today:
2 Corinthians 3:17 CSB
Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.
…so, as we continue on the Freedom Road, we see in vv. 18-30 that...
This road is built...
BUILT ON GOD’S PROMISES (Romans 8.18-25)
Promise of Future Glory (8.18-21)
2 Corinthians 5:1–3 CSB
For we know that if our earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling in the heavens, not made with hands. Indeed, we groan in this tent, desiring to put on our heavenly dwelling, since, when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
[Our new longing…]
2 Corinthians 5:4 CSB
Indeed, we groan while we are in this tent, burdened as we are, because we do not want to be unclothed but clothed, so that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
2 Corinthians 5:6–7 CSB
So we are always confident and know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Promise of Adoption Realized (8.22-25)
Ephesians 1:14 CSB
The Holy Spirit is the down payment of our inheritance, until the redemption of the possession, to the praise of his glory.
2 Corinthians 5:5 CSB
Now the one who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave us the Spirit as a down payment.
BUILT FOR GOD’S PURPOSES (Romans 8.26-30)
Carry Us through Our Weakness [specifically in prayer; (8.26-27)]
John 14:16–17 CSB
And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be in you.
John 14:18 CSB
“I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.
Work Everything for Good (8.28)
Ephesians 1:11 CSB
In him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the one who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of his will,
Jude 24 CSB
Now to him who is able to protect you from stumbling and to make you stand in the presence of his glory, without blemish and with great joy,
Conform Us to Christ (8.29-30)
Colossians 3:5–9 CSB
Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, God’s wrath is coming upon the disobedient, and you once walked in these things when you were living in them. But now, put away all the following: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old self with its practices
Colossians 3:10 CSB
and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator.
Colossians 3:11 CSB
In Christ there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave and free; but Christ is all and in all.
CONCL—
Romans 8:30 CSB
And those he predestined, he also called; and those he called, he also justified; and those he justified, he also glorified.
