The word Charismatic, even though it comes from words like ‘gift’ and ‘grace’, can carry some interesting baggage for some people. They might think of people running up and down aisle and shouting but really, it’s a term used to describe ‘divine enablement.’ We believe this enablement is expressed by God through the gifts that He gives, and we want to passionately pursue them. We think the Holy Spirit is living and working miracles through ordinary people today. That’s why we want to be a church that says, “If Jesus has more, then that’s what we want!”

Saw some interesting things in my church growing up
Sometimes people ask if New Hope Hawaii Kai a ‘charismatic’ church and the answer is ‘Yes’ but maybe not in the way they are thinking.
The word Charismatic, even though it comes from words like ‘gift’ and ‘grace’, can carry some interesting baggage for some people. They might think of people running up and down aisle and shouting but really, it’s a term used to describe ‘divine enablement.’
We believe this enablement is expressed by God through the gifts that He gives, and we want to passionately pursue them. We think the Holy Spirit is living and working miracles through ordinary people today. That’s why we want to be a church that says, “If Jesus has more, then that’s what we want!”

Eternal life:
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
If you want the gift, you have to pay the price for it…it’s death
But Jesus ‘paid your bill’…this gift can’t be EARNED to get it or keep it
God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God.
Grace matters b/c there are gifts God gives to us so we can do some stuff but they aren’t for us to earn anything.
The next gift is...
The Holy Spirit.
Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
‘Charismatic’ : Charis .. ma … means spiritual gifts…divine empowerment

Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this.
Some believe that the ‘gifts’ stopped after the apostles died
At NHHK we believe that God still does miracles and gives spiritual gifts
Most are not turned off by the ‘gifts’ but the ‘packaging’ .... This is what Paul is trying to correct in Corinth
Many are ok with most of the 27 gifts that are listed but many try to avoid one in particular and it’s ‘tongues’
We don’t need to be afraid of these spiritual gifts because
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
the ESV and NIV will say ‘for the common good’
In the OT the HS was only on a few people ‘the priests’

But at Pentecost the HS poured out on everyone…even gentiles
Later people started to ‘professionalize’: Clergy (pros) and Laity (on the bench)
Then 1500’s the Protestant Reformation occurred : Priesthood of all believers
Then it went back to Clergy/Laity
Our church is built on DCAT…developing Gifts…releasing purpose
A spiritual gift is a special supernatural ability that God gives to each of His children, so that together we can advance His purposes in this world.

A spiritual gift is NOT my natural talent, it’s not my ‘skill set’
God divinely enables you to do something
In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.
We want to get people into a space where they can think through and discover these gifts

It’s ‘ok’ to operate according to what God has divinely enabled us to do

When we DISCOVER God’s gifts for me then we can

Gifts change and mature as you change and mature
What you start doing isn’t always what you keep doing
Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.
‘covet’ the gifts…don’t give up on the passion that God has placed in you

Even if we add chapters to our book with bad choices God will always claim the final chapter
Awaken to your God given identity, calling and assignment!
This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you.

COVID may have changed so many things but it can’t stop us from using our gifts creatively
We are in a moment in history where we as the CHURCH (people) not the church (building) are asking:
God how can we more authentically live out the power of the Gospel in our time?
God USE US, in ways that make us look more like you!
What things were distracting us from simply doing what you’ve asked us to do?
