James 2:14-26

Verse 14

James is not as some have said saying something contradictory to what Paul said...
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Verses 15-17

A person’s faith is either a living faith or a dead faith.
Our actions or lack thereof will show if we have a living or a dead faith.

Verses 18-19

Verse 20

It is this section of verses that again cause some to think that the book of James doesn’t belong in the NT. The argument is that it goes against much of what Paul wrote including...
Romans 3:21–31 ESV
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith. 31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
But James is not saying that the works that a person does justifies them in the sense of salvation like Paul taught.
James is saying that the works done by a person justify their saving faith that they have placed in Jesus Christ for their salvation.
Just as we saw in chapter 1 that a faith that cannot be tested is no faith at all, so here we see that a faith that does not produce works in us is no faith at all, it is just lip service.
Saving faith is evidenced by our actions.
We do not do works to earn salvation, we do works as a result of our salvation. It is a proof that we have been saved and set free from our selfish selves, and now belong to God through His Son Jesus Christ and are now free to live for Him and as an extension of His love and grace towards others.
I really like what Pastor Chuck said - “No man will ever be moved to action without faith, and no man’s faith is genuine unless it moves him to action. They are 2 ores in rowing a boat. Only one will lead you in circles, it takes the 2 ores to get you anyplace. Faith and works are companions, they work together. the faith produces the works, the works demonstrate the genuineness of the faith.”

Verses 21-24

Now James will give us a couple of Old testament examples to prove the statement he just made in verse 20.
He starts with Abraham who is not just the father of the Jews, but is the Father (example) of faith.
Abraham was justified by faith back in Genesis 15 when God made a covenant with him, and he proved or justified his faith by works, and offering his son Isaac is just one example of that saving faith that Abraham had.
Genesis 15:1–21 ESV
1 After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” 2 But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” 4 And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness. 7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” 8 But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” 9 He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” 10 And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half. 11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away. 12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. 13 Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. 14 But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. 15 As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. 16 And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” 17 When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, 19 the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, 20 the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, 21 the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
But then we have plenty of examples of the active living faith that Abraham had including offering his son Isaac...
Hebrews 11:8–19 ESV
8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. 9 By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. 10 For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God. 11 By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered him faithful who had promised. 12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as many as the innumerable grains of sand by the seashore. 13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city. 17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, 18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 19 He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.
If Abraham did not have faith in God he certainly would not have tied down Isaac to the altar on top of the wood and raised his knife to take his own son’s life. But Abraham did have faith and believed that even though his son Isaac was as good as dead (since Abraham had every intention of offering Isaac as a burnt offering to God) that God would raise him from the ashes.

Verses 25-26

Now James uses Rahab as an example. Rahab was a prostitute and a Gentile! So James gives us examples of working faith from 2 very different people to show that genuine saving living faith can be lived out by any who place their faith in the promises of God. For us that is to say for anyone who has placed their faith in Jesus Christ for salvation.
You remember the story...
Joshua 2:1–13 ESV
1 And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there. 2 And it was told to the king of Jericho, “Behold, men of Israel have come here tonight to search out the land.” 3 Then the king of Jericho sent to Rahab, saying, “Bring out the men who have come to you, who entered your house, for they have come to search out all the land.” 4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. And she said, “True, the men came to me, but I did not know where they were from. 5 And when the gate was about to be closed at dark, the men went out. I do not know where the men went. Pursue them quickly, for you will overtake them.” 6 But she had brought them up to the roof and hid them with the stalks of flax that she had laid in order on the roof. 7 So the men pursued after them on the way to the Jordan as far as the fords. And the gate was shut as soon as the pursuers had gone out. 8 Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9 and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father’s house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.”
Rahab believed the reports of the God of Israel so much so that she was willing to put her very life on the line to protect His people and so much so that she invited all her family into her house and tied the scarlet thread out her window to show which house was hers so that neither she nor her family would be harmed when the Israelites took Jericho.
Now you know that her faith was so genuine that she not only became a citizen of Israel by marriage, but God even honored her by placing her in the lineage of King David and thus of Jesus Christ our Savior.
In the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1 we see this...
Matthew 1:5–6 ESV
5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah,
Now notice that James wraps up this section by answering the challenge he laid out in verse 14.
