We’re finished with the account of Jacob and are starting the account of his sons. From Genesis 37-50 we focus almost entirely on Joseph.
Genesis 37:5–8 ESV
5 Now Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers they hated him even more. 6 He said to them, “Hear this dream that I have dreamed: 7 Behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and behold, my sheaf arose and stood upright. And behold, your sheaves gathered around it and bowed down to my sheaf.” 8 His brothers said to him, “Are you indeed to reign over us? Or are you indeed to rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

How did God speak to His people throughout Genesis?
He walked with them (Ge 3:8 - walking in the Garden)
Speaking directly (Cain, Abraham, Issac, Jacob)
Speaking through visions (Joseph)
Speaking through prophets (Melchizedek)
Speaking through angelic messenger (Lot)
How does God speak to us today?
Jeremiah 7:13 ESV
13 And now, because you have done all these things, declares the Lord, and when I spoke to you persistently you did not listen, and when I called you, you did not answer,
God Speaks to us :
In the Written Word
2 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
In Prayer
Elijah in 1 Kings 19.
He believes he is the last follower left and everyone wants to kill him
God has him “stand on the mount before the Lord”
Strong wind, earthquake, and fire pass
Finally the sound of a low whisper and God gives him instruction
Through Discipleship
Acts 11:26 ESV
26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught a great many people. And in Antioch the disciples were first called Christians.
Church Leadership (Titus 1:9 - The church elders hold firm to the word and teach it accurately)
Small Group Leadership (Jethro’s advice in Exodus 18 - Place leaders over the thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens.)
Mentor/Coach Leadership (Direct Discipleship, Pastoral Epistles)
The Holy Spirit
John 14:25–26 ESV
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
Think about our Genesis list from earlier.
We don’t see the angelic messenger anymore. Why use an angel when God Himself lives in you.
He doesn’t walk in you, He lives in you
He will speak directly to you as the HS
Visions/Dreams are given by the HS
Prophecy is a gift of the Spirit. You will prophecy and you will hear prophecy.
