HOOK

Yesterday right here at “The Message” we saw how Jesus comforted Martha and Mary, the sisters of Lazarus who died 4 days ago— from that we learned a couple of things about prayer and comfort:
PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL IS POWERFUL
JESUS IS MY COMFORTER
Today we reached the climax of this spectacle when Jesus will perform another miracle [in the Gospel of John there is a total of 6 miracles— Water to wine [C.2], Healing of the son of a royal official [C. 4], Healing by the pool of the man lame for 38 years [C.5], Healing of the man born blind [C.9], Lazarus raised from the dead [C.11] and later in chapter 21, Miracle of the great catch of fish [the first miracle that Jesus did after resurrecting from the dead]
Let’s jump right in and see what happened, open your Bible to JOHN 11:38-44, and of course once you get there, you know what to do, type Amen!
CHARACTER, COMMAND, PROMISES, CONVICTIONS, EXAMPLES, CHALLENGES AND ENCOURAGEMENT
Read JOHN 11:38-44

BOOK

John 11:38–44 NIV
38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 41 So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” 43 When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”
Quickly you can see 3 commands from Jesus
Take away the stone
Lazarus come out
Let him go

LOOK

“IF’s” and “BUT’s”
First of all, I’d like you to take note of the “IF’s” and “BUT’s” of Martha— are these signs of her doubts or lack of confidence in the power of Jesus?
Here you can see that Martha tried to take control of the situation— like many of us, we tend to take control of our own situation
Her If’s and But’s is indicative of her effort to control her circumstances
DID I NOT TELL YOU THAT IF YOU BELIEVE, YOU WILL SEE THE GLORY OF GOD?
In other words, Jesus was making it very clear that for anyone to see the glory of God— first they must believe!
No one can proclaim God’s glory not unless they first believed
FATHER, I THANK YOU THAT YOU HAVE HEARD ME
He begun his prayers with thankfulness [gratitude]
I KNEW THAT YOU ALWAYS HEAR ME
Followed with great confidence
THAT THEY MAY BELIEVE THAT YOU SENT ME
The purpose of his prayers, and his miracles is for them to believe that he is the Son, sent by the Father

TOOK

FIRST, I MUST BELIEVE TO SEE THE GLORY OF GOD
I WILL PRAY WITH THANKFULNESS AND CONFIDENCE
