1 Timothy 1:18-20 Wage Good War English follows Japanese Letʼs pray. Letʼs pray. Good morning. I want to ask you a question this morning. Do you ever think that maybe your life would just be easier without being a follower of Christ? That it feels like a constant struggle to live the Christian life and it would be easier to just give into temptation to sin, to just keep quiet when we know we should speak? Paul knew that even Timothy as a pastor would feel that way sometimes. Paul has just told him that he was there in Ephesus to confront false teachers, that the error was serious enough that it would require much energy and effort on his part. And although Paul encourages him with his own testimony of meeting and following Christ, he knows that there will be discouragement that will come as Timothy fulfills his calling as a Pastor. To encourage him to keep going and not give up, he writes verse 18-20 to Timothy as a warning to continue to Wage Good War. Letʼs read verses 18-20 as we begin today. This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. Letʼs pray. In order to encourage Timothy to keep going in this call to ministry that would include conflict related to confronting false doctrine, and could be discouraging, Paul reminds Timothy of past prophecy that would strengthen him to keep going even when the pastoral ministry was difficult. He says in verse 18, 18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you… In verse 3 Paul told Timothy he was to “charge” those teaching false teaching to stop that teaching. We said about that word that it should be translated strongly as command, and this is the same word that we now see Paul using towards Timothy as he basically says, “I am giving you this command.” Again, as Paul addresses Timothy, we have to hear his tone in this. He calls him his child. Paul is talking as he would to his own biological son, in a loving way that is not reproving him or upset in any way, but encouraging him and sharing with him Godly advice and wisdom. This is true discipleship and pastoral training. Its probably not something that most church members think about often, but as a pastor, I am concerned with how we train the next generation of pastors. I am extremely grateful for my training at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. I know pastors who do not appreciate the training they received in Seminary or even think its very necessary; but that academic knowledge that we receive at Seminary level training in a Master of Divinity or Theology program gives the tools we need for accurate teaching and understanding of Godʼs Word. It also teaches us the humility we need to know that we do not know everything, and there are people much smarter than us that we need to learn from by way of Bible helps like Commentaries and other books. But there is another aspect of training pastors where the local church is most important, and that is the mentoring aspects of training elders and pastors for the local church. This is what Paul was doing with Timothy. Its what I want to see happen here at YIBC, where we see men who are gifted for pastoral ministry and have a desire to serve in that way. The local church…our church, YIBC…should be a place where they can be mentored for pastoring or serving as elders in a local church. Its why I wanted Chris Thomas to have several chances to preach. Its why I appreciate the times older Pastors, far more experienced in ministry than me in my early 20ʼs gave me opportunities to preach and mentored me on how to be effective in ministry. Whether they were successful might be debatable! But the local church should be the place where pastors are given the hands on opportunity to learn to be a pastor. If it had not been early ministry opportunities for Beth and I in childrenʼs programs like AWANA, later opportunities to serve as volunteer youth director and finally paid youth pastor in a local church, I would not have been prepared to be a Navy Chaplain, where I had the opportunity to pastor smaller congregations in several diverse settings, and be introduced to Japan and YIBC. Our vision of planting churches should include providing mentoring opportunities to pastors who are in training here in Japan, to work in what I believe is a healthy and God honoring church and learn by doing. There are good Seminaries like Christ Bible Seminary in Nagoya and others in Japan with men training to be pastors who desire to plant churches, and we can be a place for training, then sending and supporting them in that effort. I know that this is really not the point of this passage, but I think the entire book of 1 Timothy can help us to see the need of this sort of opportunity to train pastors. Paul is talking here about past prophecies made about Timothy. These were probably words that were spoken about his potential promise as a servant of God, or possibly even some Holy Spirit given prophetic words that told of Timothyʼs future as a pastor and dedicated servant of God. This is actually another aspect of training pastors, that churches should look for young men who demonstrate that potential and even encourage them towards elder/pastor ministry. That is what 2 Timothy 2:2 is saying when it says, “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” These words of prophecy that recognized his potential also provide him strength to carry out the primary point of Paulʼs words in these verses, which is to wage good war! The end of verse 18 says, “…that by them you may wage the good warfare…” Remember that Paul is calling him to confront error in the church and Paul knew that the ministry ahead would be a spiritual battle not a pleasant retreat. Anytime we are defending the truth and seeking to live as the church and as followers of Christ in the way that God commands, it will be a spiritual battle, a spiritual war. Remembering the prophecies spoken about him earlier in his life could give Timothy strength to continue to do battle when his resolve was gone. Paul often refers to the spiritual life in terms of a war or a battle. In 1 Timothy 6:12 that we will come to later this year he compares it to a fight that is probably closer to a boxing match when he says, “Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” We need to understand what Paul means when he says we are to wage good war. There are a lot of ways to look at whether war is good or bad. In Seminary ethics classes we discussed the classic definitions of Just War theory and what were morally (and Biblically for us) acceptable reasons for War. As a Navy Chaplains, we had lots of training and discussions regarding the moral applications of lethal force in armed conflict. In other words, Just War theory after war has begun, and when does even a morally right cause lose the moral high ground by immoral actions towards an enemy. And when I attended Marine Corps Command and Staff College, we studied not only the previous two aspects of war, but also how best to overwhelm the enemy with fire and maneuver in order to defeat an enemy on the battlefield. So each of those situations presents a good or bad war from a somewhat different perspective. Paul here presents what he means by war the good warfare as he continues in verse 19 holding faith and a good conscience. We see what Paul means by waging good warfare in these two instructions he gives. To wage good war means One, to Hold to the truth of the Gospel, and Two. to Live a blameless life. Holding faith is very simply holding to the core of what forms our beliefs and shapes our lives which is the gospel. This is what Paul is instructing Timothy to protect by confronting false teachers. What false teaching is really attacking is the core of our faith as it undermines and takes away from the truth that faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior is the only way to a relationship with God our creator. In his first letter to the Corinthian church, Paul clearly says that it is the gospel that will uphold us and we should hold these core truths and find strength to stand in the knowledge of that truth. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 says, “Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you̶unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” The entire message of the gospel and the foundation of our faith is contained in verses 3 and 4; and before he gets there, he says in verse 1, it is the truth of those verses that we find our security in…that we stand in. It is what saves us, but notice that he says in 1 Corinthians “if you hold fast to the word I preached to you.” The Bible teaches the doctrine we call perseverance of the saints. Those who are truly saved cannot be unsaved, but not because of a decision they made at a Billy Graham crusade or in a Sunday School class, but because of a real faith in Jesus Christ that results in life change that proves their allegiance to Christ and results in a lifetime of faith. Our faith may grow weak at points, and it will be tested, but true faith will see us throughout our lives. We will persevere, keep on going, until the end and we spend an eternal life free of pain and weak faith for all of eternity. This is what the more popular statement of the doctrine of perseverance ‒ eternal security ‒ really means. After telling us that the gospel is where we gain security in our lives, Paul then defines the gospel for the Corinthians. The gospel is the good news that Jesus died and rose again for our sin. Now that may sound simple, but it incorporates so much truth, so much grace, so much mercy and love. It declares the truth that we are all sinners who are separated from God by that sin and failure to obey him. In fewer words, it is declaring the truth of Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Sin is a failure to glorify God, and it is how all of us are born and live our lives apart from a relationship with Jesus Christ. And it is Jesus Christ who is the focus of the good news, the gospel of salvation. Because as Paul points out the good news is that Jesus Christ died and rose for our sin. And how is that good news? 1 Peter 3:18 says, “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit.” Those sins had to be punished and Jesus Christ, who lived a perfectly sinless life ‒ he was righteous - , died for those sins in our place ‒ the righteous for the unrighteous. Anyone who believes that Jesus died for them ‒ in other words has faith in Christ and accepts him as their Savior ‒ that person is given salvation and escapes Godʼs punishment. Anyone who does not believe faces Godʼs punishment. John 3:36 says, “Whoever believes in the Son (Jesus Christ) has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. Notice that in Corinthians Paul includes the resurrection as part of the gospel. Our new life in Christ is possible because our Savior has already conquered death and the life he enjoyed after the grave and now free from the weak restraints of human existence can be ours in eternity as well. But Paul lists a second aspect of waging good war and that is a good conscience. In Titus 1, Paul tells Titus that he had left him in Crete to appoint elders, and then starting in verse 6, he lists characteristics that should be found in these pastors or elders. The first one he lists is being blameless. He says in Titus 1:6, “If anyone is above reproach...” This is what is meant by having a good conscience. No one can hold anything against us. Our lives publicly and privately are free from sin and match our claim to faith in Christ. We will never be perfect, but if we are waging war then it will be primarily against sin. If it has not been clear by now, we are talking about spiritual warfare. Remember from a couple weeks ago that false teaching ultimately leads to acceptance of sin, so if we are holding true to the gospel, then it will result in gospel living as well that wages spiritual battle against sin and Satanʼs attempts to get us to fall. If you recall in Ephesians 6, Paul talks about this spiritual war that we are in, and the armor of God that we use to fight sin and temptation. Ephesians 6:11-13 says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. This is how we maintain a good conscience, by putting on the whole armor of God, and staying saturated in Godʼs Word. The final aspect of the armor of God is our only offensive weapon that that Paul talks about in Ephesians 6:17, “and take… the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” We must be people of the Word, with the Bible as our foundation in order to wage good spiritual war.Dr. Thomas Lea, longtime professor of theology at Southwestern Seminary summarizes this verse well when he says of verse 19, that “Paulʼs appeal reminds us that correct belief alone [Thatʼs holding faith] does not guarantee a useful Christian life. Each Christian must combine a right understanding of Christ with a proper response to that understanding [Thatʼs a good conscience]. Our faith must produce good works, not pious platitudes. Paul wants to drive home the seriousness of this spiritual warfare, that we must wage it, no matter how weary we get, because the truth of the gospel is at stake with the error of false teachers. So, he gives a warning about rejecting this instruction. The end of verse 19-20 says, “By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.” We donʼt have many details about these two Hymenaeus and Alexander, but given the context of false teachers in this passage, we can be certain that these two were ones who had rejected the truth of the gospel, which as we talked about earlier led to the ultimate rejection of moral good and the acceptance of sin. We do know that Hymenaeus was called out by Paul in 2 Timothy as well, and there we do see a specific false teaching that goes against the gospel that he was teaching. 2 Timothy 2:16-18 says, “But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, 18 who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened.” Their heresy they were teaching seemed to be something related to the resurrection of believers from the dead. The Bible teaches that one day all of those who die in Christ will be resurrected to eternal life with new bodies. If the resurrection has already happened then it could mean they were denying any eternal life after death, and that nothing that we do on earth matters, effectively denying the gospel and Christianity itself. This is only one possible interpretation, though, and we really do not know for sure all the details. The bottom line is that when we move away from having our faith solidly fixed on Jesus Christ and the true gospel, then we no longer have true faith. And wherever our faith was leading, we are now moving away from Christ and to use Paulʼs ship illustration, moving us toward a rocky shore where our ship will be destroyed. This most likely means that they never experienced real faith in Jesus Christ in the first place. This is the situation that Hebrews 6:4-6 is talking about when it says, “For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.” I have seen this over and over again with teenagers and adults I worked with as a youth pastor. Many of them now reject anything about Jesus Christ, and while some still claim Christ, their lives, broken relationships, ungodly choices and behaviors, and uninvolvement with the church give a very different message. The answer that Paul gives to those who reject the gospel or twist the gospel is to turn them over to Satan. The most likely meaning of this phrase is that these men were to be treated as non-believers. They should not be considered one of Godʼs children, part of the church; but a child of Satan and part of the world with everyone else who has not accepted Jesus Christ. This is the extreme result and last step of church discipline. When someone is openly rejecting Biblical truth and teaching, and their lives follow their changed beliefs to accept sin, then the church must act. Matthew 18 tells us that you need to approach the one in sin individually, then with witnesses and if that person still accepts sin with no repentance then you take it before the church, and Paul makes it clear here and in other places that the church should remove the unrepentant sinner. This is the extreme, though. The example of Hymenaeus and Alexander is a warning to Timothy and to us to continue to wage spiritual warfare to protect the truth of the gospel and to live the truth of the gospel. There will be plenty of times that you want to give up in pursuit of holiness and taking a stand for the gospel, but we can find strength for those times in that same gospel that we seek to defend and protect. And it is in this truth, that we fight the spiritual battles in the strength of Jesus Christ and not our own. We fight to protect ourselves from sin and our church from sin so that Christ is glorified and the world around us is drawn to know more about why we are here and who we serve. Letʼs pray.
